Do not treat the Prismana record as a second listing of Basic Thornblade. The wiki separates Basic Thornblade as No. 034 and Prismana as No. 035. The same distinction applies when you read a type, ability or habitat entry: identify the form first.
How Sword Dance works
Sword Dance is the reason Thornblade’s attack pattern is different from a character that simply repeats its strongest skill. The Official Aniimo Wiki describes the trait this way: “Each skill used grants 1 stack of [Sword Dance], up to 4 stacks, lasting 15s. Each basic attack costs 1 stack of [Sword Dance] to deal 180% extra damage.”

Build stacks with skills
Every skill use adds one Sword Dance stack, up to four. A stack lasts 15 seconds, so the setup phase is temporary rather than permanent. You can begin a fight by using skills to establish stacks, but you should watch the timer instead of assuming that a full set will remain available indefinitely.
Spend stacks on basic attacks
A basic attack consumes one stack and receives 180% extra damage. The bonus is attached to the basic attack that spends the stack; it is not a passive increase to every attack while the buff is present. If four stacks are available, four basic attacks can receive the enhanced damage, provided the stacks do not expire first.
The practical rotation
- Use Thornblade’s skills to create Sword Dance stacks. Count the stacks rather than immediately switching away if you are preparing a damage window.
- Move into basic attacks while the stacks are active. Each basic attack spends one stack and gains the 180% extra-damage effect.
- Rebuild with skills after the stacks are spent or close to expiring. The exact order of available skills depends on the current form and encounter, but the skill-to-stack-then-basic pattern is the core loop.
- Use the loop around enemy openings. If an enemy is about to become invulnerable, move, or force a defensive phase, delay spending the final stacks until your empowered basics can connect.
AniimoVerse recommends this skill-to-stack, empowered-basic rotation and suggests adapting Thornblade’s form to the matchup. That is a guide recommendation, not a published guarantee that one sequence is optimal in every encounter.

Thorny Defense: mitigation, counter and critical-rate timing
Basic Thorny Defense gives Thornblade a defensive option without removing its offensive identity. The Basic entry says the stance reduces damage taken by 20% and counters when Thornblade is attacked. It also says that being attacked just as the skill is used grants a 30% critical-rate increase for 15 seconds.
How to use the stance
- Use it before an expected hit, not after the damage lands. The counter and the conditional critical-rate effect depend on being attacked as the skill is activated.
- Use the 20% reduction to protect a damage window. The stance can let Thornblade remain in range long enough to complete empowered basic attacks.
- Do not assume the counter is automatic damage. The counter requires the enemy to attack Thornblade while the stance is active; a missed timing produces the defensive benefit but may not produce the same offensive payoff.
Why duration figures differ
The Basic record lists the 30% critical-rate effect for 15 seconds. The Prismana record lists a 10-second duration for that critical-rate effect. These figures should be read as form-specific record details rather than combined into one universal duration. If you are playing Prismana, use the duration shown for that form in the current game data; if you are using Basic Thornblade, the Basic entry is the relevant reference.

Thornblade’s forms and elemental choices
Thornblade is not locked to one identical typing across every form. The official records list Basic as Grass, Prismana as Grass/Water, Thunderstorm as Grass/Electric, and Towerwood as Grass. This gives you a reason to select a form for the encounter rather than choosing solely by habit.
Basic: Grass
Basic Thornblade is the clearest baseline for the character’s role: Grass DPS, 509 total attributes and 121 ATK in the official index entry. Use this record when a guide or team discussion says “Thornblade” without naming another form, but confirm that the advice is actually intended for Basic.
Prismana: Grass/Water
Prismana adds Water to Grass and appears as No. 035 rather than No. 034. Its index record reports 499 total attributes and 121 ATK. The same record is also the source of the 10-second critical-rate duration noted for its Thorny Defense entry.
Thunderstorm: Grass/Electric
Thunderstorm combines Grass and Electric. The official Thunderstorm entry lists Sea of Flowers as its habitat, but the form’s elemental identity is the important distinction when you are considering matchup coverage.
Towerwood: Grass
Towerwood is listed as Grass and has a different habitat entry from the Basic and Thunderstorm records: Rosetower Woods. Do not infer that every Grass Thornblade record shares the same spawn location.

What role Thornblade should play on a team
Keep Thornblade in the damage-dealer slot. The official DPS classification and Sword Dance mechanic both point to the same job: create a damage window, then convert stacks into empowered basic attacks. The other party members should make that loop safer or more reliable.

Support
A support partner can help Thornblade stay active, reach a target, or gain more value from the period in which its stacks and critical-rate effect are available. AniimoVerse specifically names Melloblum as an ideal partner for Thornblade. Treat that as a current guide recommendation rather than proof that Melloblum is mandatory.
Break
A Break specialist gives the team a way to pressure an enemy’s defensive or stagger-related state while Thornblade prepares or spends Sword Dance stacks. AniimoGuide’s concrete lineup uses Shrubclaw for this slot.
Sustain or regeneration
A sustain character helps when the fight is long enough that Thornblade must repeat its stack cycle rather than finish the target in one burst. AniimoGuide uses Coraliz as a regeneration role, giving the proposed party a way to recover while Thornblade continues dealing damage.

How to choose between team variations
There is no established experimental ranking that proves one Thornblade party is optimal for every player and encounter. Use three checks when changing the lineup.
1. Role coverage
- Keep one clear damage slot for Thornblade.
- Reserve at least one slot for support if Thornblade is being interrupted before it can spend stacks.
- Add Break when enemy defenses or stagger checks are stopping your basic-attack window.
- Add sustain when the party survives the opening but collapses during repeated Sword Dance cycles.
2. Form and matchup
Start with the form whose typing fits the opposing encounter, then verify that the rest of the team does not leave a major coverage gap. Basic and Towerwood are Grass, Prismana is Grass/Water and Thunderstorm is Grass/Electric. A form change can alter the elemental answer without changing Thornblade’s central DPS job.
3. Your Thorny Defense timing
If you reliably activate Thorny Defense just as an attack arrives, you can value an aggressive support or Break pairing because the stance supplies some protection and a counter. If your timing is inconsistent, a more forgiving sustain choice may produce better real-world results than a theoretically higher-damage partner.

Published habitat records do not agree on one universal location, and the disagreement appears to be form- and source-dependent. The safest approach is to identify the form you want and check its current location in the in-game Aniilog before traveling.

These locations should not be merged into a single claim that Thornblade always appears in one area. The official entries distinguish forms, while the community databases provide different broader listings. In practice, open the Aniilog, select the exact form or record, and use the in-game habitat information currently attached to it.

Common mistakes and how to fix them
Using basic attacks before building stacks
Unmodified basic attacks do not consume Sword Dance value for the 180% bonus. If you are trying to maximize Thornblade’s defining mechanic, use skills first and begin the basic-attack sequence once stacks are available.
Letting stacks expire
Stacks last 15 seconds. Starting the setup and then spending too long moving, swapping or waiting for an opening can erase the benefit. Build closer to the moment you can attack, or spend the stacks before the timer runs out.
Assuming every Thorny Defense record has the same timer
The Basic record gives 15 seconds for the conditional critical-rate effect, while the Prismana record gives 10 seconds. Check the form rather than copying a duration from another Thornblade entry.
Building four damage dealers
Thornblade already occupies the DPS job. Replacing support, Break or sustain with another damage character may increase paper damage while making it harder to keep Thornblade alive or create a safe basic-attack window.
Following a habitat claim without checking the form
Sea of Flowers, Rosetower Woods and Breezy Plains all appear in current listings, but they are not interchangeable evidence for every form. Confirm the live Aniilog entry before committing to a search route.
