If THRONE AND LIBERTY keeps crashing on Windows PC, start with the symptom rather than trying every fix at random. For an UE4-TL error, test -dx11, disable XMP and overclocks, and lower graphics settings. For an NVIDIA shader or video-memory crash, disable overlays, use a stable graphics driver, and try -neveropenpso. For Easy Anti-Cheat error 47, verify the Steam files and check whether antivirus software is blocking EAC. If the entire PC reboots, blue-screens, or powers off, investigate system stability instead of treating it as an ordinary game-file problem.
This guide covers the Windows PC/Steam version only. Note when the crash occurs—at startup, during shader optimization, after an update, during play, or after a long session—and record the exact error message before troubleshooting.

Is the game causing the crash, or is the PC unstable?
A crash limited to THRONE AND LIBERTY is more consistent with corrupted game files, shader compilation, an overlay, an anti-cheat conflict, a driver interaction, or a game-specific Unreal Engine problem. It does not automatically mean the GPU is too weak or defective.
If several unrelated games also crash, broaden the investigation to GPU drivers, overheating, unstable CPU or GPU settings, XMP/EXPO memory profiles, BIOS firmware, RAM, power delivery, and failing hardware. A system restart, blue screen, or thermal shutdown is especially important: that is a system-stability symptom, not merely a THRONE AND LIBERTY installation problem.

When the issue begins immediately after a patch, check the official crash and known-issue information first, then verify the files and undo recent graphics or overlay changes. Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance separates general crashes, NVIDIA shader crashes, Intel processor-related crashes, UE4-TL errors, and other cases, so the best fix depends on the branch you are in. See the official launch and crash troubleshooting guide.
Crash symptoms and the best starting point
| What happens | Start with |
|---|---|
| Crash before the main menu | Update Windows and drivers, verify files, disable overlays, then try -dx11. |
| UE4-TL crash message | Try -dx11, disable XMP and overclocks, and lower graphics settings. |
| Crash during shader optimization | Disable overlays, close GPU-heavy programs, try -neveropenpso, and test HAGS off. |
| “Video memory is full” or “shader memory is full” | Use a stable driver, close GPU-heavy processes, disable overlays, and avoid Epic while testing. |
| Intel 13th- or 14th-generation desktop CPU | Update BIOS, load defaults, disable XMP/overclocks, then consider the documented XTU workaround. |
| Easy Anti-Cheat error 47 | Verify files and check antivirus or security-software interference. |
| Crash after a long session | Check temperatures, power settings, background downloads, and stock GPU settings. |
| Reboot or blue screen | Investigate hardware, BIOS, temperatures, memory, drivers, and Windows logs. |
These are troubleshooting signals, not guaranteed diagnoses.
1. Update Windows and your graphics driver
Try this first for: startup crashes, crashes after an update, unexplained Unreal errors, and systems running older Windows or GPU software.
Update Windows
- Press Windows + I.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart the PC.
Update the GPU driver
Use the official software for your GPU: NVIDIA App or NVIDIA’s driver page for GeForce cards, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition for Radeon cards, and Intel’s official support tools for Arc or integrated graphics.
Do not assume the newest driver is automatically the most stable driver for this game. Amazon’s support page names NVIDIA GeForce 581.15 WHQL as an example of a stable driver; that is a version cited by the support article, not a current 2026 recommendation. Check the official guidance and the GPU manufacturer’s current release information.
If the crash starts after a driver update, use the vendor’s rollback option where available, perform a clean installation, or test the previous known-good driver. Avoid random third-party driver packages.
2. Verify the Steam game files
Try this for: crashes after patches, missing or damaged files, failed launches, and repeated errors that affect only THRONE AND LIBERTY.
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click THRONE AND LIBERTY.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, restart Steam, and launch the game.
Steam may redownload missing or corrupted files. This normally does not delete your online characters, but it will not solve an unstable overclock, conflicting overlay, bad driver, or failing component.
If verification repeatedly finds damaged files, investigate storage health, free space, antivirus interference, permissions, and the Steam library itself. Do not delete random .pak, .utoc, or configuration files as a standard fix; community file-deletion workarounds are not established official guidance.

3. Disable overlays and non-essential software
Try this for: crashes during startup, shader compilation, or gameplay when monitoring, capture, RGB, or chat utilities are active.
Temporarily disable or fully exit:
- NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience overlay
- AMD overlay
- Steam Overlay
- Xbox Game Bar
- Discord overlay
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server
- RGB, hardware-monitoring, capture, and peripheral software
- Web browsers and other GPU-heavy background applications
Close the programs from the system tray as well as their visible windows. Test one group at a time, then re-enable items individually once the game is stable. This identifies the conflicting component without requiring a permanent uninstall.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
4. Force DirectX 11 with -dx11
Try this for: UE4-TL errors, “Unreal process has crashed” messages, and crashes that occur during startup or shader-related loading.
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click THRONE AND LIBERTY and choose Properties.
- Stay on the General tab.
- Find Launch Options and enter
-dx11. - Close the window and launch the game.
Amazon lists forcing DirectX 11 as an official workaround for UE4-TL and other crash types. It is a workaround, not proof that DX11 is the preferred renderer: the published PC requirements specify DirectX 12. Review the official requirements.
DX11 may change performance, visual features, or shader behavior. If it does not help, remove the launch option and retest the default mode. Do not stack launch parameters without a specific reason.
5. Try -neveropenpso for NVIDIA shader crashes
Try this for: NVIDIA GeForce RTX crashes during shader optimization, especially when the message mentions full video memory or shader memory.

- In the General tab, enter
-neveropenpsoin Launch Options. - Launch the game and test the same action that previously caused the crash.
This is a targeted parameter listed by Amazon for the matching NVIDIA shader-optimization symptom, not a universal crash command. If the crash persists or the game behaves differently, remove it and continue with driver, overlay, HAGS, and graphics-setting tests.
6. Remove overclocks and disable XMP/EXPO
Try this for: UE4-TL crashes, intermittent crashes, crashes that affect multiple games, and systems using CPU, GPU, or memory tuning.
- Restart the PC and enter BIOS/UEFI using your motherboard’s setup key.
- Load optimized or default settings, or manually disable XMP/EXPO, CPU multiplier or enhanced-turbo overclocks, and other memory tuning.
- Return the GPU to default settings in its tuning utility.
- Save changes, reboot, and test the game at stock settings.
Motherboard labels differ. Laptop users may not have XMP or meaningful overclock controls, so skip settings that are unavailable.

XMP/EXPO can appear stable in most games and still fail under a particular workload. If disabling it stops the crash, that is evidence of a stability problem involving the memory profile or memory controller—not proof that the game alone is at fault. Do not casually increase voltages to compensate.

7. Update the BIOS, especially for Intel 13th- or 14th-generation desktop CPUs
Try this for: affected Intel 13th- or 14th-generation desktop systems, particularly when crashes are accompanied by other game instability or occur at stock-looking settings.
- Identify the exact CPU and motherboard or system model.
- Visit the motherboard or system manufacturer’s official support page.
- Install the latest stable BIOS using the manufacturer’s instructions.
- After updating, load default BIOS settings.
- Disable XMP and CPU/GPU overclocks, then retest THRONE AND LIBERTY.
Amazon also documents an advanced Intel Extreme Tuning Utility workaround that reduces the Performance Core Ratio from X55 to X54 to X53. Treat this only as an advanced, temporary troubleshooting measure after BIOS and stock-setting tests—not as a universal fix or a replacement for the manufacturer’s firmware guidance.
If you use Intel XTU, download it from Intel, change one setting at a time, and stop if the system becomes unstable. BIOS updates carry their own risks, so follow the exact procedure for your board.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Lower graphics settings, test HAGS, or reinstall
Lower the graphics load
Try this for: video-memory warnings, shader crashes, crashes after switching to Epic, or systems close to the published GPU requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Change the overall preset from Epic to High or Medium.
- Reduce texture quality first when the error points to video memory.
- Lower shadows, effects, view distance, and post-processing.
- Apply the changes and restart the game.
If stability returns, increase individual settings one at a time. Lower settings reduce image quality, but they are also a useful diagnostic for VRAM and shader-load problems.
Disable Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling
On Windows 11, try Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Default graphics settings → Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling. On Windows 10, the path is generally Settings → System → Display → Graphics settings. The exact label can vary by Windows build.
Turn HAGS off, restart Windows, and retest. This may help one configuration and have no effect on another.
Reinstall only as a last resort
- Verify the files first.
- Back up relevant local configuration files if needed.
- Uninstall THRONE AND LIBERTY through Steam.
- Reinstall it to a healthy drive with adequate free space.
- Test before restoring overlays, launch options, or tuning changes.
The official support page lists 63 GB of storage, but updates and temporary files require additional room; the source does not specify an exact extra amount. A reinstall is time-consuming and often ineffective when the real cause is hardware instability, a driver, or an overlay.

Easy Anti-Cheat error 47: use a separate branch
EAC error 47 is not the same as an ordinary Unreal Engine crash. The official EAC guidance recommends verifying the game files and checking whether antivirus or other security software is falsely blocking Easy Anti-Cheat. Open the official EAC troubleshooting article.
- Restart the PC.
- Verify THRONE AND LIBERTY’s Steam files.
- Install available Windows updates.
- Check antivirus quarantine and blocked-application notifications.
- Temporarily test the security software’s game mode or an appropriate exclusion, following that vendor’s instructions.
- Never leave antivirus protection permanently disabled.
If the error remains, contact THRONE AND LIBERTY support with the exact EAC message and diagnostic information. Avoid treating community-posted EAC command lines as universal official instructions.
Check the published PC requirements
Amazon’s current published support page lists the following requirements and warns that they may change:
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10/11 64-bit | Windows 10/11 64-bit |
| CPU | Intel Core i5-7700 | Intel Core i5-11600K |
| RAM | 16 GB | 16 GB |
| GPU | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 |
| DirectX | 12 | 12 |
| Storage | 63 GB | 63 GB |
| Other | Broadband internet connection | Broadband internet connection |
Steam currently displays an older 8 GB RAM minimum, which conflicts with the newer official support page. For this article, treat 16 GB as the safer practical baseline while recognizing that the storefront and support listings are not synchronized. Neither meeting the minimum nor exceeding it guarantees crash-free play.

- The exact crash or error message
- The date and time of the crash
- CPU and GPU models
- Windows version
- GPU-driver version
- Whether XMP/EXPO or overclocking is enabled
- Which overlays and background utilities were disabled
- A DxDiag report
- Clear reproduction steps, including whether the crash occurs at startup, during shader optimization, or after a specific in-game action

Frequently Asked Questions
Will forcing DirectX 11 always stop THRONE AND LIBERTY from crashing?
No. Amazon lists -dx11 as a workaround for some UE4-TL and other crashes. It may help stability, but it can change performance and rendering behavior and is not guaranteed to work.
Should I disable XMP if only THRONE AND LIBERTY crashes?
It is worth testing if you see UE4-TL errors or intermittent instability. Disabling XMP/EXPO is a temporary stability test recommended by Amazon, not proof that the memory profile is defective.
Recommended Free Tools
Is Easy Anti-Cheat error 47 the same as a game crash?
No. Follow the separate EAC branch: restart, verify Steam files, and check antivirus or security software for blocked EAC activity.
The Bottom Line
Use the crash symptom to choose the fix: verify files and disable overlays first, then test drivers and -dx11; use -neveropenpso for the matching NVIDIA shader-memory case; update BIOS and remove tuning on affected Intel systems; and reserve reinstalling for the end. A reboot, blue screen, or shutdown requires PC-stability troubleshooting, not just another game reinstall.
