Zachary J. Fields’s 2015 ThrustMaster Mark II FCS: The Resurrection documents a way to read one stored Mark II FCS joystick with a microcontroller—not a universal USB adapter or a verified guide to current PC compatibility. Fields opened his controller, continuity-checked its DB-15 wiring, and built a prototype around a Particle Spark Core. If you want to revive one today, the useful starting point is his pin map, with an important warning: verify your own controller before applying power.

What the resurrection project does—and does not—show

Fields found the joystick after years in storage and chose hardware conversion because the connector and driver situation he encountered did not suit the modern machines he was considering. He reported finding a driver intended for Windows 95 OSR 2; an uploader note he quoted said it did not function under Windows NT. That is historical context from his project, not a current operating-system support matrix.

Rather than establish that a particular gameport or USB adapter works, the project demonstrates a prototype that reads the stick’s analog axes, hat and digital controls through a microcontroller. It covers the specific controller Fields inspected and does not establish compatibility across hardware revisions, current operating systems or modern adapters.

Fields’s reported DB-15 pin map

After opening the base, Fields found one potentiometer per axis. He reports that the X and Y potentiometers share the analog supply on pin 1, with their signal lines on pins 3 and 6. His continuity-tested map for the inspected controller is:

This is the author’s observation of one unit, not a manufacturer specification or guaranteed pinout for every Mark II FCS. Check your own connector and wiring with a multimeter before connecting power. A DB-15 female breakout board, the component Fields used to prototype without cutting the joystick cable, can make individual pins easier to access; confirm its pin layout and orientation before wiring.

How the hat, axes and buttons are read

Two analog axes

The base contains a potentiometer for each axis. In Fields’s map, both use the supply on pin 1, while the X and Y signals appear on pins 3 and 6 respectively.

Four-way hat on one analog line

Fields describes four tactile switches in the handle, with different associated resistances combining the hat directions into a single analog output. His map identifies pin 13 as that signal and pin 1 as the hat’s separate supply. The prototype reads the resulting voltage to determine the hat state.

Trigger and three buttons

The trigger and three buttons are digital inputs in the project: trigger on pin 2, buttons 1 and 2 on pins 7 and 10, and button 3 on pin 14.

How Fields wired the Spark Core prototype

The implementation is specific to the Particle Spark Core and the controller he inspected; it is not a drop-in wiring recipe for another microcontroller. Fields used a DB-15 breakout board, solderless breadboard, jumper wires and three 47 kΩ resistors. In his listed setup, pins 1 and 4 connect to 3.3 V, while the breakout ground connects to the Core’s ground. He says the ground connection helps reduce static buildup between the connector and Core.

Digital inputs connect to the trigger and buttons. The X, Y and hat signals go to analog inputs, each with an external 47 kΩ resistor to ground. The project does not characterize tolerances across controller variants or verify this wiring for other boards, so do not assume the same supply, input limits or pin assignments are appropriate for different hardware.

Reading rate and sample output

The sample code packs the hat direction, buttons, trigger and two 12-bit axis values into a 32-bit state structure. It reads at 4 Hz so serial output is easier to inspect. Fields recommends raising the rate to 60 Hz for actual control; that is his guidance, not a reported performance benchmark.

Opening the controller: tools and cautions

Fields lists a PH2 Phillips screwdriver, an H2.0 hex driver and an Extech DM110 pocket multimeter. He used the multimeter for continuity checks. These are the tools named in his teardown, not a claim that every owner needs them for ordinary use.

The Rockfire RM-203 gameport adapter is mentioned in Fields’s article as one way to address the connector hurdle. The project does not verify its present availability or compatibility with every Mark II unit, so it should not be treated as a current recommendation without checking fit for your hardware.

What to take from the project

The article is most useful as a teardown record and a starting point for experimentation: it identifies the wiring Fields observed, explains how the hat’s directions share an analog signal, and shows how he prototyped inputs with a Spark Core. It does not show that every Mark II FCS can be connected to a modern PC through a particular adapter or that the reported wiring is identical on every unit.
