The Best Survival Games With Co-Op Play

Choose a co-op survival game by the experience your group wants: Grounded for a guided shared world, Valheim for a small-group sandbox, Don't Starve Together for a demanding wilderness, or Enshrouded for larger-group RPG survival.

The best co-op survival game depends on what your group wants to do together: follow a story, build a long-running world, or struggle through a demanding wilderness. For a guided adventure with a persistent shared world, start with Grounded; for an open-ended small-group world, consider Valheim; and for a tougher shared wilderness loop, look at Don’t Starve Together. Groups seeking a cooperative survival game with RPG combat and a stated 16-player limit should consider Enshrouded.

Which co-op survival game fits your group?

Game Best fit Group and world details
Grounded A guided, story-led backyard adventure Online host plus up to three friends; shared worlds can retain progression when the original host is away, according to its Steam listing.
Valheim A small group seeking an open-ended world Playable solo or cooperatively; Iron Gate says it is intended for a small group and that it does not provide official servers. See the official FAQ.
Don’t Starve Together Players who enjoy a demanding shared wilderness loop Its core activities include fighting, farming, building, and exploring. The cited official pages do not state a player cap; check the store listing for your edition. See Klei’s game page.
Enshrouded A larger group that wants survival crafting with RPG combat Keen Games’ FAQ describes online co-op for up to 16 players, as well as solo play. See the official FAQ.

Best for a guided story and a world that can continue: Grounded

Grounded turns a backyard into a dangerous survival setting, with exploration, crafting, combat, and a story mystery. Obsidian’s Steam listing says a host can play online with up to three friends, making four players total. It also describes shared worlds that preserve progress even when the original host is not present.

That shared-world feature is especially useful if friends cannot always play at the same time. Choose it when your group values a guided adventure and ongoing cooperative progress more than an unstructured sandbox.

Best for a small group building an open-ended world: Valheim

Valheim supports solo and cooperative play. Iron Gate describes it as intended for a small group rather than as an MMO, so it suits friends who want to explore and develop a shared world without a large persistent online population.

#1 Best Overall
ARK: Survival Evolved - Nintendo Switch
  • Capture and Tame Dinosaurs: Discover over 100 different dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures on the island, finding ways to tame them into useful additions for your tribe's dyno herd
  • Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety, and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game
  • Harvest, Hunt and Build: Cut down trees and turn them into a basic home, which you can quickly expand into a Jurassic estate. Hunt for meat, scavenge for plants (or start your own garden!)
  • Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes, and styles
  • Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout

Plan how the group will host before settling on it: Iron Gate’s FAQ says the developer does not provide official servers. The group therefore needs a workable hosting arrangement rather than expecting a developer-run server.

Best for a demanding shared wilderness: Don’t Starve Together

Don’t Starve Together puts the emphasis on surviving together through fighting, farming, building, and exploration. It is a good match for players who want the shared wilderness itself to be the challenge, rather than a primarily story-led campaign or an RPG-style combat adventure.

Rank #2
ARK: Survival Ascended - PlayStation 5
  • ARK: Survival Ascended has completely recreated and redesigned the artwork and worlds of ARK to take advantage of the latest in videogame technology, Unreal Engine 5, using high-end graphics features such as fully dynamic Global Illumination (“Lumen”), so that light bounces realistically of off surfaces and provides realistic reflections, and advanced mesh streaming (“Nanite”) of hundreds of millions of triangles for extreme detail.
  • Advanced new physics systems such as dynamic water so that every creature creates waves, ripples, splashes, and bubbles as they move through fluids, and fully interactive physical foliage where every blade of grass, bush, and tree reacts to characters, explosions, projectiles, and physics objects.
  • ARK: Survival Ascended includes access to all of ARK’s worlds, including Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, ARK Genesis Part 1, ARK Genesis Part 2, and more. The Island is released now, with the subsequent expansion worlds to be added at no additional cost on a regular basis.
  • Thorough Quality of Life revamps in every area: redesigned User Interfaces, dynamic navigation for intelligent creature pathfinding, Wild Babies, Photo Mode, new Camera systems, new Map system, Tracking System, new Structures and Items, new Creatures, and much more.
  • Cross-Platform Modding: Download & play new custom content created by players, including new maps, creatures, items, and game modes, through a dedicated new Mod-bowser directly within the game! Enjoy an endless stream of new ARK content as the creativity and talent of the community is fully unleashed for the first time ever across gaming platforms!

Klei’s game page and platform support page list PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, iOS, and Android alongside PC. The available official pages cited here do not establish a player limit or cross-play compatibility for specific device pairings; check the current listing for the edition and platforms your group plans to use.

Best for a larger group and RPG combat: Enshrouded

Keen Games describes Enshrouded as a cooperative survival crafting action RPG. Its FAQ says it can be played solo or online with up to 16 players, making it the clearest option in this selection for a group interested in a larger cooperative session.

The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival Deluxe Edition - Nintendo Switch
  • Hard-Hitting Arcade Beat ’Em Up Combat - Use brutal melee abilities, crowd-clearing ranged attacks, or a mix of the two in fast-paced skirmishes. Enjoy responsive, crisp, and satisfying fighting gameplay while exploring the apocalypse.
  • Face Iconic Bosses - Take on powerful, fan-favorite walkers like Winslow, the Well Walker, and more. The Saviors provide their own challenges as you throw down with Negan and Simon in intense, multi-phase boss battles that test your skill, strategy, and survival instincts.
  • Replayable Arcade Challenge - Master each character’s move set and tackle multiple difficulty levels in an experience built for repeat runs and escalating challenges. Or jump in with an optional Easy Mode for casual play.

A 16-player limit describes the stated online group size, not cross-play or availability on every platform. The FAQ’s console language is a platform plan rather than proof of a current release, so check the relevant storefront before buying and confirm that every player can join from their chosen platform.

Check platform compatibility before you buy

Do not assume that a game’s advertised group size means friends on different systems can play together. The official pages cited here establish platform availability for Don’t Starve Together, but do not confirm cross-play for every game and platform combination in this list.

ARK: Survival Evolved (PS4)
  • Use cunning strategy and tactics to tame, train, ride and breed the 100+ dinosaurs and other primeval creatures roaming the dynamic, persistent ecosystems across land, sea, air, and even underground Build your character's strengths and gain items, skills, and pet creatures using in-depth role-playing systems
  • Start a tribe with hundreds of other players to survive and dominate competing tribes...and ultimately discover ARK's true purpose
  • Build a fire or shelter, then craft customizable clothing & armors to help protect against damage and extreme temperatures on your way to unlocking advanced technologies and equipment
  • Chop down trees and mine metal and other precious resources to build massive multi-leveled structures composed of complex snap-linked parts
  • Confirm the exact game edition and platform for each player in your group.
  • Look for an explicit cross-play statement covering that particular platform pairing; platform availability alone is not enough.
  • For Valheim, agree on a hosting plan, since Iron Gate says it does not provide official servers.
  • For Grounded and Enshrouded, treat the stated player limits as group-size information, not evidence of cross-platform support.
