Thrustmaster T598 review: Is Direct Axial Drive worth it?

The T598 is a smooth, console-ready direct-drive bundle with a 5 Nm torque rating, but its basic pedals, modest strength, and platform-specific versions matter.

The Thrustmaster T598 is a compelling entry-level direct-drive bundle for PlayStation and Xbox racers—provided you buy the correct platform version. It combines a 5 Nm Direct Axial Drive wheelbase, detachable 30 cm wheel, magnetic paddles, two-pedal set, desk clamp, and integrated display. At the observed US promotional price of $499.99, it is strongest for console users who want smoother, more detailed force feedback without assembling a system from separate parts.

Its compromises are equally important: 5 Nm is modest compared with stronger enthusiast bases, the included wheel and pedals are basic, and the PlayStation and Xbox versions are separate products. PC-only racers may find better torque-per-dollar elsewhere.

What is the Thrustmaster T598?

The T598 is a complete sim-racing wheel bundle, not just a motor base. The standard package includes the T598 servo base, detachable Sportcar wheel, magnetic paddle shifters, Raceline Pedals LTE two-pedal set, carpet-grip pieces, desk-clamping hardware, a 98 W power supply, USB and pedal cables, and adjustment tools. See the official product page for the current box contents.

It is sold in platform-specific versions:

Version Console compatibility PC compatibility
T598 PlayStation/PC PS5 and PS4 Windows 10/11
T598 Xbox/PC Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S Windows PC

These are not interchangeable console products. A PC-compatible label does not mean that every T598 works natively on every console. Confirm the platform icons and exact model before ordering using Thrustmaster’s compatibility reference.

The US store showed a $499.99 promotional price on August 18, 2026, reduced from a displayed $599.99 former price. Treat $499.99 as an observed sale price rather than a permanent MSRP. The Xbox listing showed similar promotional pricing, although Thrustmaster’s pages were not completely consistent.

Direct Axial Drive explained

Traditional entry-level wheels use gears or belts to transmit motor force to the steering shaft. A direct-drive wheel connects the motor directly to the shaft, eliminating that transmission. The T598 takes a different motor approach: its proprietary axial-flux motor uses magnetic force operating along the motor’s axis rather than the radial geometry common to many motors.

In practical terms, Direct Axial Drive is intended to provide:

  • smoother steering resistance;
  • less mechanical grain or notching;
  • more immediate force-feedback detail;
  • lower mechanical noise than many gear-driven wheels; and
  • clearer sensations from kerbs, tire load, and road-surface changes.

Thrustmaster describes the technology as its next generation of direct drive in its technical explanation. The key qualification is that axial-flux geometry does not automatically make the T598 stronger than every conventional direct-drive base. Driving feel also depends on torque output, firmware, filtering, game support, wheel weight, rim diameter, and mounting rigidity.

That makes smoothness and strength separate questions. The T598’s main innovation is its smooth, cog-free feel—not a record-setting torque ceiling.

How strong is 5 Nm?

Thrustmaster specifies 5 Nm of constant torque and advertises a further 100% overshoot capability. The important number for sustained steering force is 5 Nm.

Overshoot is designed to create short, sharper peaks for events such as impacts, kerbs, crashes, or other transient effects. It does not turn the T598 into a continuously operating 10 Nm wheelbase. Calling it a “10 Nm wheel” without that qualification is misleading.

Five newton-metres is enough to make tire loading, understeer, kerbs, and surface changes substantially more communicative than a typical gear-driven starter wheel. It is not the same strength class as many 8–12 Nm enthusiast bases. Drivers who want heavy steering forces, a large rim, or considerable headroom may eventually outgrow it.

Mounting also changes the experience. On a flexible desk, high force-feedback can move or twist the furniture. A rigid wheel stand or cockpit lets the base communicate its forces more consistently.

HARMONY and the Race Dash

HARMONY is Thrustmaster’s name for its high-frequency torque technology. The company says it is designed to reproduce fine cues such as kerb texture, tire squeal, road-surface changes, vibration, and—in supported firmware versions—engine-related sensations. It is a Thrustmaster feature name, not an independent industry performance standard, and its behavior varies by game and firmware.

A later update added an Engine Roar HARMONY effect with Off, Low, Mid, and High levels. Thrustmaster identifies PlayStation firmware v3.08 and Xbox firmware v1.60 in its April 2026 firmware announcement.

The built-in Race Dash screen can display race information and adjust more than 10 wheel settings directly, including Gear Jolt. That is useful for day-to-day setup, but it is not equivalent to a full external dashboard. Telemetry display and available information depend on game support, while deeper configuration may require a PC and My Thrustmaster Panel.

The included wheel rim

The detachable Sportcar rim measures approximately 30 cm, or 11.8 inches, and includes magnetic paddle shifters. It is practical for road cars and general racing, and its detachable design leaves room for other Thrustmaster wheel add-ons.

Thrustmaster GT Wheel Add-On Gran Turismo Licensed Rim - PS5 & PC
  • Wheel rim officially licensed by Gran Turismo and Sony, designed in collaboration with Polyphony Digital
  • Features the next-gen Quick Release, natively compatible with the T818 and T598 Direct Drive racing wheel bases
  • Round wheel rim (11 inches / 28 cm in diameter) wrapped in fine, smooth-textured leather
  • 4 rotary encoders with push-button functionality for a total of 12 controls
  • 1 D-pad, 2 mini-sticks, 4 tact-switch action buttons

The rim is also one of the clearest places where the T598’s price shows. Independent reviews have generally described it as functional but basic compared with dedicated GT, formula, or rally wheels. TechRadar’s review praised the direct-drive performance while identifying the standard rim as a limitation.

Existing Thrustmaster owners may be able to reuse compatible wheel add-ons, but compatibility varies. Some rims require an adapter, and platform support differs between bases. Check the official compatibility information rather than assuming every Thrustmaster rim works without modification.

Pedals: usable starter hardware, not necessarily load-cell pedals

The bundle includes the Raceline Pedals LTE two-pedal set. Thrustmaster describes an upgrade path to three pedals, while separate Raceline LC products provide a different load-cell option.

Do not automatically call the included brake a load-cell brake. A third-party listing has used load-cell terminology, but Thrustmaster’s own product information distinguishes the included Raceline Pedals LTE from the separately discussed Raceline LC set. Verify the exact regional package and pedal model before buying.

The included pedals are adequate for starting out, but serious braking consistency is often more dependent on rigid mounting and load-cell sensing than on additional wheel torque. A load-cell upgrade, pedal plate, wheel stand, shifter, handbrake, or cockpit can raise the real system cost considerably.

Setup and firmware

  1. Choose the correct PlayStation/PC or Xbox/PC version.
  2. Connect the pedals to the base and attach the wheel rim.
  3. Connect power and USB.
  4. For initial setup, connect the base to a Windows PC.
  5. Install My Thrustmaster Panel.
  6. Check and update the base firmware, plus any separately purchased accessory firmware.
  7. Mount the wheel securely using the desk clamp or cockpit mounting points.
  8. Select the correct console or PC mode.
  9. Configure steering rotation, force-feedback gain, damping, and button mapping in the game.
  10. Test at conservative force-feedback levels before increasing intensity.

During the cited research pass, the PlayStation support page listed firmware v3.08 and My Thrustmaster Panel version 1.3.240.0. Xbox firmware v1.60 was identified in Thrustmaster’s April 2026 announcement. Firmware and software change, so use the official support page rather than relying on launch-era instructions.

My Thrustmaster Panel is PC-only. Console users can adjust many settings through the onboard interface, but a Windows PC may still be needed for firmware updates and deeper configuration.

If something goes wrong

  • Wheel not detected: check power, USB, platform mode, and the game’s wheel profile.
  • No force feedback: confirm that the game supports the wheel, force feedback is enabled, and gain is not set to zero.
  • Wrong steering angle: recalibrate and verify the game’s rotation setting.
  • Feedback feels too aggressive: reduce gain and avoid running every title at maximum overshoot or strength.
  • Accessory fails: check whether the rim or pedal set requires a separate firmware update.
  • Console incompatibility: verify that you bought the correct base; PlayStation and Xbox models are separate.
  • Straight-line oscillation: lower gain and damping-related settings, and never leave the wheel unattended at high force-feedback strength.

Thrustmaster also notes that firmware changes can affect how the T598 is identified by PS5 games using newer SDK support. Older games may require a backward-compatibility mode, which can explain confusing detection behavior.

What reviews agree on

Independent reviews broadly agree that the T598 feels smoother and more detailed than common gear- or belt-driven entry-level wheels. Reviews from TechRadar, Tom’s Guide, and PC Gamer emphasize its immediate, quiet, detailed feedback and value for console racers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

They also identify the same limitations: the included rim and pedals are less premium than the wheelbase technology, and 5 Nm is useful but not comparable with stronger enthusiast bases. Game support matters too. A wheel may work as an input device while lacking full force-feedback tuning, telemetry, Race Dash support, or correctly labeled controls.

Upgrade path and total cost

The T598 can grow with a Thrustmaster setup. Possible additions include:

  • Raceline LC or another load-cell pedal upgrade;
  • TH8S or TH8A shifter;
  • TSS handbrake;
  • GT, formula, rally, or hypercar wheel add-ons;
  • a rigid wheel stand or cockpit; and
  • quick-release adapters where required.

These are optional, not prerequisites. The included wheel and pedals are usable immediately. However, a buyer planning to add a cockpit, load-cell pedals, shifter, and premium rim should compare the complete projected cost with a stronger base-and-peripherals system before purchasing.

How it compares with alternatives

Logitech G29, G920, or G923

Logitech’s wheels are cheaper, simple to set up, and broadly supported, but they use gear-driven force feedback. Choose Logitech when low cost and convenience matter most; choose the T598 when a smoother direct-drive upgrade is the goal.

Fanatec CSL DD and Gran Turismo DD Pro

Fanatec offers a broad modular ecosystem and PlayStation-oriented Gran Turismo products. The T598’s advantages are its complete bundle, platform-specific native support, and distinctive axial-drive design. Exact pricing, bundles, and compatibility vary by region.

MOZA R5

The R5 is a popular PC-focused direct-drive bundle. For PC-only users it deserves comparison, but native console compatibility is the decisive advantage of the appropriate T598 version.

Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel

The G Pro offers more powerful direct drive and more premium construction, but at a substantially higher price. It is aimed at buyers with a larger budget rather than someone seeking a roughly $500 starter bundle.

Turtle Beach VelocityOne Race family

Turtle Beach offers competing direct-drive packages with different platform targets and accessory combinations. These are particularly relevant to Xbox and PC buyers, but the exact model’s compatibility must be checked before purchase.

Thrustmaster T818

The T818 is a higher-tier Thrustmaster direct-drive base suited to PC users building a modular system. It requires separate wheel and pedals, so it is not a like-for-like alternative to the ready-to-race T598 bundle.

Who should buy the T598?

  • PS5 or PS4 racer: A strong choice if you want native console direct drive and a complete package near $500.
  • Xbox racer: Consider the Xbox/PC version, not the PlayStation model.
  • PC-only racer: Compare MOZA, Fanatec, and stronger Thrustmaster bases if maximum torque or modularity matters more than a bundled console-ready system.
  • Existing Thrustmaster owner: The servo base alone may make sense if you already own compatible pedals and a rim.
  • Casual user: A Logitech wheel may be better value if you do not need direct-drive smoothness.
  • Enthusiast with a rigid cockpit: Consider whether 5 Nm will provide enough headroom before committing.

Verdict

The T598’s best argument is the balance of smooth direct-drive feedback, native console support, included peripherals, and a relatively accessible bundle price. Its Direct Axial Drive system addresses the grain and notching associated with many starter wheels, while HARMONY and the Race Dash add useful detail and control.

It is not a continuous 10 Nm wheel, its included pedals are not automatically load-cell pedals, and its standard rim is more functional than luxurious. The separate PlayStation and Xbox versions also make platform selection critical.

At the observed $499.99 US promotional price, the T598 is an especially sensible upgrade for PS5/PS4 racers moving from a Logitech G29/G923 or older Thrustmaster wheel. Xbox users should choose the Xbox/PC edition. PC-only buyers should compare alternatives before buying, particularly if they prioritize higher torque, premium pedals, or a larger ecosystem over an all-in-one package.
