On AMD Radeon hardware, many Steam games running through Proton can approach Windows 11 performance, and some are faster. But Windows remains the safer all-purpose choice: it is more consistent on Nvidia, substantially stronger for ray tracing, and far more reliable for anti-cheat multiplayer, Game Pass, launchers, mods, VR, and new releases.
The right answer depends less on an operating-system average than on your GPU, game library, graphics features, and tolerance for troubleshooting.

The short version
- AMD plus Steam: Linux can be within a few percentage points of Windows 11 in rasterized games.
- Nvidia: Windows has a more consistent performance advantage, especially in rasterization.
- Ray tracing: Windows remains substantially faster, particularly on AMD Radeon.
- Competitive multiplayer: Windows is the safer choice because anti-cheat support varies by game.
- Handhelds: SteamOS can outperform Windows on the same device, but handheld results do not automatically apply to desktop PCs.
These are not universal operating-system penalties. Results change with the distribution, kernel, Mesa or Nvidia driver, Proton version, game patch, API, upscaler, and benchmark method.

Most Linux gaming comparisons are not native-Linux versus native-Windows tests. They usually involve a Windows game running through Proton, Valve’s compatibility tool.

For a DirectX game, the approximate path is DirectX 9/10/11 through DXVK to Vulkan, and DirectX 12 through VKD3D-Proton to Vulkan. Windows system calls are handled through Wine and Proton. This is translation, not conventional emulation, and it does not impose a fixed performance cost. The result depends on the game engine, driver, shader workload, CPU bottlenecks, and implementation quality. Valve’s Steamworks Proton documentation explains the compatibility model.
What the benchmark evidence shows
A 2025 ComputerBase comparison tested Windows 11 and Linux with an AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT and Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti across a 16-game set at WQHD and Ultra HD. Linux used RADV and AMDVLK for Radeon testing. Its results show why one “Linux versus Windows” number is misleading.
| Scenario | Linux versus Windows |
|---|---|
| RX 9070 XT rasterized average FPS, 1440p, RADV | About 3% slower |
| RX 9070 XT rasterized percentile FPS, 1440p, RADV | About 2% slower |
| RX 9070 XT ray-traced average FPS, 1440p, RADV | About 33% slower |
| RTX 5070 Ti rasterized average FPS | About 20% slower |
| RTX 5070 Ti rasterized percentile FPS | About 27% slower |
| RTX 5070 Ti ray-traced average FPS | About 15% slower |
ComputerBase’s full benchmark results come from one test configuration, so these percentages should not be treated as permanent platform-wide rules.

AMD Radeon: Linux can be very competitive in rasterization
AMD is generally the strongest Linux case. The open-source RADV Vulkan driver is mature, closely integrated with Mesa, and benefited from years of Steam Deck and AMD-focused Linux development.
In the 2025 test, the RX 9070 XT was roughly 3% behind Windows in average rasterized performance and 2% behind in percentile performance with RADV at 1440p. AMDVLK was close in average FPS but produced weaker frame pacing in that test. That distinction matters: a similar average can still feel worse if frame-time spikes are more frequent.
Linux also won some individual rasterized games. The test reported Linux advantages of approximately 5% in Atomfall, 8% to 11% in Spider-Man 2, 15% in Stellar Blade, and 8% in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, depending on the driver. Windows led in games including Counter-Strike 2 by about 16%, Frostpunk 2 by 15%, and Horizon Forbidden West and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 by about 9% each.

The conclusion is not that Linux is faster on AMD. It is that the performance gap can be small enough that the reader’s own library matters more than an aggregate chart.
Nvidia: Windows remains the safer performance choice
Nvidia gaming on Linux has improved considerably, but its results are less uniform. In the 2025 comparison, the RTX 5070 Ti was about 20% slower in average rasterized performance and 27% slower in percentile performance on Linux. No tested game showed the GeForce running faster under Linux in that comparison.
The result depends on the Nvidia driver branch, Proton version, X11 or Wayland, desktop compositor, multi-monitor setup, NVAPI and DLSS support, and whether ray tracing or frame generation is enabled. This does not mean Nvidia “does not work” on Linux. It means Windows currently offers more predictable performance and feature coverage for Nvidia owners.
Ray tracing changes the answer
Ray tracing is the clearest Windows advantage. The 2025 test found the RX 9070 XT about 33% slower on Linux in average ray-traced performance at 1440p, with a similar percentile deficit. Individual gaps were much larger under the tested conditions: approximately 69% in Avowed, 73% in Cyberpunk 2077, 169% in Silent Hill 2, and 149% in Spider-Man 2.

Those figures are test-specific, not universal. They can reflect Mesa and RADV maturity, Vulkan ray-tracing paths, shader behavior, game-specific optimizations, and different upscaling or frame-generation implementations. Mesa 26 improved Linux ray tracing in the later test, but Windows still retained a major advantage.
If ray tracing is central to your gaming priorities, Windows 11 remains the low-risk choice.
Average FPS is not the whole experience
Compare more than the headline average:
- Percentile FPS or 1% lows: Useful for identifying slow frames.
- Frame-time graphs: Reveal spikes that an average hides.
- Shader compilation: Can cause first-launch delays or in-game stutter.
- Traversal and asset-streaming stutter: May come from the game engine rather than the operating system.
- Input latency: Important for competitive games and high-refresh displays.
- GPU and CPU utilization: Helps identify a driver, scheduler, or power-profile bottleneck.
Linux’s Steam shader-precache system can move compilation before gameplay, reducing interruptions after preparation finishes. The trade-off is a potentially long first launch or background preparation. ComputerBase reported cases taking roughly 15–20 minutes, particularly on GeForce systems. A longer wait before launch may still be preferable to shader stutter during play.

Measurement also matters. Linux tools such as MangoHUD and Windows capture tools do not necessarily sample frames identically, and overlays can add overhead. Do not compare results unless resolution, settings, upscaler, frame generation, driver, Proton version, warm-up state, and measurement method are aligned.

HDR, VRR, upscaling, and frame generation
Raw FPS does not establish feature parity.
- HDR: Linux support has improved, especially with Wayland, Gamescope, and gaming-focused distributions, but behavior still depends on the compositor, driver, display, and game.
- VRR: It can work well, but X11 versus Wayland, desktop environment, GPU vendor, and multi-monitor arrangements affect reliability.
- DLSS, FSR, and XeSS: The same game may expose different features or behave differently through Proton.
- Frame generation: Record whether it is available, which implementation is used, and which latency technology accompanies it.
- Latency modes: Reflex, Anti-Lag, synchronization settings, compositor behavior, and frame limits can matter more than a small average-FPS difference.
A fair comparison must use the same upscaler quality, ray-reconstruction setting, frame-generation mode, and latency features. Comparing DLSS on Windows with FSR on Linux does not isolate the operating system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compatibility is Linux’s biggest limitation
The most important failure is often not low FPS but a game that cannot play properly.
Anti-cheat and multiplayer
Some anti-cheat systems support Linux or Steam Deck when the developer enables the required configuration. Others depend on Windows kernel-level behavior or reject Proton. A game may launch while matchmaking, voice chat, or account authentication still fails.
AreWeAntiCheatYet is a useful community reference, but reports can become outdated after a patch and are not guarantees. Check recent reports for the exact game before switching. ComputerBase excluded incompatible anti-cheat titles from its benchmark and noted that EA games such as F1 25 generally did not work on Linux at the time tested.
Steam, launchers, DRM, and mods
Linux is easiest when the game is purchased through Steam, works through Proton, has no incompatible anti-cheat, and has recent positive compatibility reports. In Steam, the usual workflow is:
- Install Steam for Linux.
- Open Settings → Compatibility and enable Steam Play.
- For a game, open Properties → Compatibility to select a Proton version.
- Test the game and check recent ProtonDB reports if something fails.
- Try Proton Experimental or another recommended build only when current reports support it.
Menu labels can change between Steam versions. ProtonDB is community-maintained and cannot guarantee future compatibility.

Linux can also use GOG, Epic, and other libraries through tools such as Heroic Games Launcher and Lutris. These broaden access but can add separate prefixes, launch options, permissions, launcher updates, and maintenance. Windows remains preferable for Windows-only mod managers, older DRM, publisher launchers, UWP or Microsoft Store games, VR software, specialist peripherals, capture utilities, and overclocking tools.
Game Pass
Windows has a major ecosystem advantage. PC Game Pass uses the Windows/Xbox ecosystem and does not have an equivalent native Linux installation experience with the same entitlement model. Linux users may use Steam purchases, browser-based cloud gaming where available, or a separate Windows installation.
Desktop Linux is not the same as SteamOS
SteamOS and Steam Deck results come from a tightly controlled AMD handheld platform with specific power management, drivers, firmware, and a console-like interface. SteamOS can sometimes outperform Windows 11 on the same handheld, as reported in Ars Technica’s testing.
That does not prove Linux will beat Windows on a desktop RTX system, a hybrid-graphics laptop, or a multi-monitor workstation. A CachyOS benchmark is also not automatically representative of Bazzite, Nobara, Ubuntu, or Fedora.
Which platform should you choose?
| Your priority | Best default | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Steam single-player games on AMD | Linux is viable | Rasterized performance can be close to Windows, with some games faster. |
| Nvidia gaming with predictable performance | Windows 11 | The tested Linux deficit was meaningful in rasterization and percentile performance. |
| Ray tracing | Windows 11 | Windows retains a substantial advantage, especially on AMD. |
| Competitive multiplayer | Windows 11 | Anti-cheat and latency features are less uncertain. |
| PC Game Pass | Windows 11 | It provides the native installation and entitlement experience. |
| Steam Deck-style handheld use | SteamOS or a SteamOS-like Linux system | Power management and interface integration are major benefits. |
| Mixed Steam, Game Pass, VR, and unsupported games | Dual boot | Linux can handle the compatible majority while Windows remains available for exceptions. |
A practical pre-switch checklist
- List the games you play every week, not just your unplayed library.
- Check recent ProtonDB reports for each game.
- Check anti-cheat status at AreWeAntiCheatYet and the game’s official support channels.
- Identify whether you rely on Game Pass, Microsoft Store, VR, mods, launchers, or proprietary peripherals.
- Match your GPU to realistic expectations: AMD generally offers the smoother Linux path; Nvidia favors Windows for consistency.
- Decide whether HDR, ray tracing, frame generation, or competitive latency is essential.
- Keep Windows available through dual boot if one or two unsupported games are deal-breakers.
Common failure modes
The game launches but multiplayer fails
Check recent ProtonDB reports and official support channels, then try the recommended Proton version without unofficial launch options. A game update may have changed compatibility. If the title is essential and anti-cheat remains unsupported, retain Windows.
Performance is worse than published results
Compare the kernel, Mesa or Nvidia driver, Proton version, game patch, compositor, power profile, upscaler, frame-generation setting, shader-cache state, and overlay tools. Different configurations can produce different results.
Linux has higher average FPS but feels worse
Check percentile FPS, frame-time spikes, shader compilation, VRR, compositor settings, Gamescope configuration, and overlay overhead. Smoothness is not determined by average FPS alone.
Verdict
Linux is now a credible gaming platform, not an automatic performance downgrade. For AMD Radeon owners who mainly play compatible Steam games, particularly rasterized single-player and indie titles, the experience can be close to Windows 11 and occasionally faster.
Windows 11 remains the better default for Nvidia owners seeking predictable performance, ray-tracing enthusiasts, competitive multiplayer players, PC Game Pass subscribers, VR users, heavy modders, and anyone who values maximum compatibility over experimentation. If your library spans both camps, dual boot is often the most practical answer: use Linux where it is excellent and Windows where compatibility still matters more than a small FPS difference.
