Tap or hold the action input to thump, bank through turns, slide under red bars, jump through blue rings, and later switch lanes. Boss patterns repeat, giving you time to learn the sequence and strike back. The official manual describes its controls using a default DualShock 4, so translate the button directions below to your own controller or keyboard.
How to read the track
You play as a space beetle racing along a track toward a giant head. Watch for the upcoming cue and choose the matching action before you reach it. The game’s official site calls this “rhythm violence” and says it can be played in 2D or VR: Thumper official site.

- White rectangular cues: thumps.
- Turns: hold the action input and bank left or right.
- Red bars: slide beneath them.
- Blue rings: jump through them.
- Later hazards: lane changes and laser sentries add new responses.
The manual explains these cue types but does not provide exact timing windows or complete level-by-level routes. Learn the rhythm of the section in front of you rather than relying on a memorized route or a universal timing count.
Core actions and controls
The button names below follow the official manual’s default DualShock 4 reference. On PC, the manual also lists keyboard controls; mappings can vary, so use the controls shown for your setup.

Thump on white cues
Tap X as you reach a white rectangular thump. A perfect thump contributes to your streak and can build the gem multiplier. Missing a thump can cost you a shell and, later, trigger attacks from laser sentries.
Bank through turns
Hold X and push the left stick left or right as the turn arrives. The key is to keep the action input held while steering through the bend. Perfect turns matter for score and rank, so use the visual approach of the corner to prepare rather than making a last-second correction.
Slide under red bars
Hold X as you meet a red bar to slide through it without taking damage. A clean slide is also part of the manual’s checklist for improving rank. Consecutive perfect red-bar sequences can earn extra gems.

Jump through blue rings
To jump, thump while holding up. Keep the action input held in the air to increase the jump distance; consecutive jumps can extend your flight. Aim to pass through blue rings, which count toward rank and can be part of a gem-earning sequence.

Press down while in the air to pound. This creates a shockwave that can open some boss shields from Level 3 onward. Pounding tentacles ahead earns kill points, and pounding thumps during a streak can turn upcoming thumps into bonus-thumps.
Boss fights: learn the repeating loop
Boss encounters are patterns to learn, not one-off reactions. The manual puts it plainly: “Boss patterns loop until you defeat them.” Watch the sequence, identify which track cues repeat, then execute it cleanly. Perfectly completing looping patterns fires your green energy weapon at the boss.

Some boss shields require the pound shockwave, beginning with certain bosses from Level 3. If an attack does not get through, look for the opportunity to jump and pound rather than repeating the same response. Bonus-thumps also offer recovery and score opportunities: the manual says a bonus-thump restores your shell after damage. Landing the green weapon on its first loop creates a bonus-thump; pounding that weapon on its first loop creates two.
What changes in later levels
Level 4: lane switching
Lane changes begin in Level 4. Some turns require you to switch lanes, and you may need to bank into a barrier when a lane ends. Keep scanning beyond the nearest cue so you can account for the lane layout as well as the immediate obstacle.
Level 5: laser sentries
Level 5 introduces laser sentries that attack when you miss a thump. Prioritize the white thump cues while learning these sections; a missed beat can have a more immediate consequence than a lost streak.

Improve your score and rank
Checkpoint bonuses reflect gems, perfect turns, avoiding damage, avoiding misses, and kills. Sub-level ranks progress from C through B and A to S. The manual’s practical checklist for improving rank is:
- Hit every thump.
- Slide through every red bar.
- Jump through every blue ring.
- Avoid damage and missed cues.
- Execute perfect turns.
- Hit bonus-thumps when they appear.
Perfect thumps build 2X and 3X streak multipliers. Perfect sequences of six or more red bars and/or blue rings grant additional gems. These are score opportunities, not prerequisites for completing each section.

- Movement speed increases at 3X and again at 4X.
- At 4X, shell recovery is restricted to bonus-thumps.
- One death ends the run.
For an S+ sub-level rank, the manual requires every thump, red bar, and blue ring; perfect turns; and no damage. To earn S+ for a full level, survive, earn at least S in every sub-level, and earn S+ in at least half of them.
Restarting and recentering
- Quick Restart menu: press L1/LB, or R on keyboard, during a level.
- Recenter in VR: hold Options/Start or Esc for 1.5 seconds.
The manual lists Space/Enter for the primary keyboard action and WASD/arrow keys for movement, alongside controller mappings. Check the in-game control display or your platform’s settings if these inputs do not match your configuration. PlayStation’s listing identifies PS4 and PS5 editions with optional PlayStation VR2 features, while warning that availability can vary by region: PlayStation Thumper listing.
