timesynctask.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows system component, not a game file or Visual C++ runtime. If Windows says timesynctask.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What is timesynctask.dll
The file is described as Time Synchronization Task and is associated with the scheduled task:

A typical location is:
C:WindowsSystem32TimeSyncTask.dll
The exact file version can vary between Windows releases. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is normally used for 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit compatibility files. Do not assume that a copy in SysWOW64 is the correct replacement simply because an error mentions a 32-bit application.
This DLL is related to Windows time-synchronization task handling. It is not the same thing as the Windows Time service binary, and it is not a standalone time-sync program.

First, check whether the file is present
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Select the address bar.
- Enter:
text
C:WindowsSystem32
- Search for
TimeSyncTask.dll.
If it is present, right-click it, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Check that the signer is Microsoft and that the path is the expected Windows system folder.
A familiar filename is not proof that a file is safe. A copy in Downloads, a temporary folder, a user profile, or an unrelated application directory should be treated as suspicious until scanned.
Open Windows Security from the Start menu, select Virus & threat protection, and run a scan. Also open Protection history to see whether the original file was quarantined.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A damaged or incomplete update can leave a protected Windows component missing.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the operation that produced the DLL error again.
If the error began immediately after an interrupted update, this step may restore the component through normal Windows servicing. If the message remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than copying a DLL manually.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before System File Checker when Windows files are missing or corrupted. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected files and restores valid versions.

- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands finish.
A successful result may say that corruption was repaired, or that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations. Check whether the original error has disappeared.
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, restart the computer and run the same SFC command again. If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source with the /Source and /LimitAccess options described in Microsoft’s DISM repair documentation.

Repeating SFC without first understanding whether DISM repaired the component store rarely adds useful information. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies before you decide whether the full version’s repair functions are appropriate, but Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the standard repair path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a system file after a detection or suspected malware cleanup.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand recent detections.
- Look for an entry involving
TimeSyncTask.dll. - Review the original file path and the detection details.
- Run a full scan before deciding whether to restore anything.
Only consider restoring the file if all of these are true:
- The original location was the expected Windows system folder.
- The file has a valid Microsoft digital signature.
- A current scan does not identify it as malicious.
- You are confident the quarantine event was a false positive.
If malware is suspected, run a Full scan. For a deeper check, use Microsoft Defender Offline, which scans before the normal Windows environment starts. Microsoft’s Windows Security scan guidance explains these options.
Do not restore a file merely because its name is familiar. Malware can use the same filename as a legitimate Windows component.

Fix 4: Use the Windows repair reinstall option
If Windows Update, DISM, and SFC do not restore the component, Windows 11 may offer a repair reinstall that keeps personal files, installed applications, and settings.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Keep the computer connected to power and restart when prompted.
This option is available only on supported Windows 11 installations. It reinstalls the current Windows version and can repair damaged system components without requiring a clean installation. See Microsoft’s repair reinstall instructions.
If the option is unavailable, back up important files and use official Windows installation media. Microsoft provides the Windows 11 download page, including installation media and ISO options.
Fix 5: Try System Restore after a recent system change
Use System Restore when the error started after a driver installation, cleanup utility, update, or other identifiable system change and a suitable restore point exists.

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. It does not normally delete personal documents, photos, or other personal files. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guide.

If no restore point exists, return to Windows servicing or use a repair reinstall instead.
Fix 6: Investigate drivers only if the timing supports it
A driver is not the usual cause of a missing TimeSyncTask.dll, and Device Manager will not recreate a missing Windows DLL. However, a storage, chipset, firmware, or security-software driver problem can contribute to failed updates or file corruption.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories with warning icons.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a recently updated device, open its Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if that option is available and the timing clearly matches the DLL problem.
Manually hunting through many hardware-support pages can make driver troubleshooting needlessly slow. Outbyte Driver Updater can identify outdated drivers with its free scan, while driver installation through the full version remains optional and should not replace Windows repair for this system component.
Does regsvr32 fix this file
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It calls a DLL’s DllRegisterServer function, so it applies only when a component supports COM self-registration.
The examined TimeSyncTask.dll component exposes registration-related functions, but registration is not the normal first-line fix for a missing or corrupted Windows copy. Running:
regsvr32 TimeSyncTask.dll
will not restore a deleted protected file, repair the Windows component store, rebuild the scheduled task, or correct a missing dependency. It can also produce confusing errors if the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit regsvr32 is used.
Use DISM and SFC first. Consider registration only when a specific administrator or application repair procedure explicitly requires it and the correct file architecture is known.

Do not download the DLL from a random website
A manually downloaded DLL can have the wrong Windows version, architecture, dependencies, or digital signature. It may also contain malware. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder often hides the original problem instead of repairing Windows.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component servicing, System Restore, Microsoft repair reinstall, and official Windows installation media.

Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET automatically
TimeSyncTask.dll is a Windows component, not a normal Visual C++ runtime, DirectX library, or application framework file. Installing unrelated runtimes is unlikely to restore it.

Do not delete a suspicious duplicate
If you find copies outside the Windows directory, scan them first. Deleting files from an application folder can stop that application from working, while deleting system files can create additional damage.
If the error says the module was not found
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that TimeSyncTask.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL.
Check the expected Windows path, verify the signature, run DISM and SFC, and inspect recent security or update events. If the message appears only when launching one application, repair that application after Windows servicing is complete, but do not assume the application owns this system DLL.
If the real problem is incorrect time
If the DLL error is gone but the clock still fails to synchronize, troubleshoot the Windows Time service rather than replacing this file.
Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
w32tm /query /status
w32tm /query /configuration
To request synchronization, run:
w32tm /resync
These commands help distinguish a missing system component from a time-service, configuration, network, or time-source problem. Microsoft documents them in its Windows Time service tools guide.
FAQ
Is timesynctask.dll malware?
The legitimate component is a Microsoft Windows DLL associated with the Windows time-synchronization scheduled task. A filename alone does not prove authenticity. Verify the path, Microsoft signature, and Windows Security scan results.
Should the file be in SysWOW64?
The commonly documented location is C:WindowsSystem32TimeSyncTask.dll. Windows architecture rules are not intuitive: on 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system binaries and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit compatibility binaries. Do not copy the file between folders.
Will reinstalling Windows always be necessary?
No. Start with Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and security-history checks. Use System Restore or a repair reinstall if those steps fail. A clean installation is a last resort after backing up personal data.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What if SFC cannot repair the file?
Run DISM first, restart, and run SFC again. If DISM cannot repair the image, use a matching official Windows source or proceed to a repair reinstall.
Can I ignore the error if time is correct?
Not if Windows repeatedly reports that the component cannot load. The time may currently be correct while the scheduled synchronization task remains damaged. Repair the Windows component before the problem affects future synchronization.
