Titanfall 2 is still worth considering if you want a fast first-person shooter with a memorable single-player campaign and fluid Pilot-and-Titan combat. Critics received it strongly: Metacritic lists an 89 Metascore from 61 critic reviews. Whether it is the right pick for you depends on whether you want the campaign, multiplayer, or both—and multiplayer service conditions should be checked for your platform before buying.

Storefront owner ratings offer another snapshot, not a like-for-like comparison with critic reviews. The US PlayStation Store page for the Ultimate Edition showed 4.58/5 from 132,769 global owner ratings. These figures can change, and each storefront uses a different rating pool and method. Steam’s listing and the US PlayStation Store listing display their respective ratings.
Is the Titanfall 2 campaign good?
The campaign is a defining part of the game: it was the first single-player campaign in the Titanfall series. EA’s launch announcement describes rifleman Jack Cooper joining with Vanguard-class Titan BT-7274 after a failed Militia assault on Typhon. The story gives the Pilot-and-Titan pairing a single-player context rather than making it only a multiplayer mechanic. EA’s launch announcement provides the premise and release details.
#1 Best Overall
- Advanced, Action Packed Gameplay: Whether fighting as a Pilot, the dominant force on The Frontier, or as a Titan, 20 foot tall war machines, Titanfall 2 provides an incredibly fun, fluid, and thrilling combat experience that is unmatched
- Captivating Single Player Campaign: Step on to The Frontier as a Militia rifleman with aspirations of becoming a Pilot; Stranded behind enemy lines, and against overwhelming odds, you must team up with a veteran Vanguard class Titan and uphold a mission you were never meant to carry out
- Deeper Multiplayer Action: With six brand new Titans, a host of deadly new Pilot abilities, an expanded customization system, new modes and much more, Titanfall 2 gives players the deeper Multiplayer experience they have been asking for
- Play with Friends, or Make New Ones: The social tissue of Titanfall 2, Networks makes it fast and easy to play with friends old and new; Whether Social or Competitive, players will be able to create and join a variety of Networks that best suit their play styles and preferences
If you mainly want a single-player shooter, the campaign can be evaluated on its own; multiplayer is a distinct PvP mode, not a prerequisite for appreciating the story campaign. The reviewed reception repeatedly highlights the movement and fluidity, though the criticism of camera, aiming, and platforming means the feel will not suit everyone.
What makes the gameplay distinctive?
Fast Pilot movement, including wall-running, sits alongside the ability to fight on foot and pilot a Titan. EA describes the game as building on the series’ Pilot and Titan combat; its multiplayer includes six Titans, Pilot abilities, customization, and Networks. That combination is central to its identity: it is not simply a conventional shooter with large robots added as a separate mode.

Respawn CEO Vince Zampella described the design intent at launch as building on the first game’s “dynamic Pilot and Titan gameplay” for an experience that was “deeper, more refined, yet still as fun as ever.” That is the developer’s stated aim, not independent evidence of quality. EA’s announcement contains the quote.
Is Titanfall 2 multiplayer still worth buying for?
Critics praised the multiplayer as well as the campaign, but some found it less novel than the campaign or the first Titanfall. A more important practical issue for a 2026 purchase is current service health: the available platform and review listings do not establish server status or player population by platform. If multiplayer is your main reason to buy, check current, platform-specific server and community information before purchasing rather than assuming the experience will be active or trouble-free.
Rank #3
EA said at launch that post-launch maps, modes, and weapons would be free to all Titanfall 2 players. That was a historical commitment about content policy; it does not verify current servers or present-day store terms.

EA announced worldwide availability on October 28, 2016, for Xbox One, Origin for PC, and PlayStation 4; Steam also lists a PC release date of October 28, 2016. Steam identifies Respawn Entertainment as developer and Electronic Arts as publisher. The game’s original platform set is therefore PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Check the store listing and console compatibility before buying, especially when choosing a physical copy or a bundled edition.
Steam’s Ultimate Edition listing describes the base game, Deluxe Edition content (including Prime Titans and cosmetics), and Jump-Starter content such as Titan and Pilot tactical unlocks, credits, XP tokens, and a weapon Warpaint. This description applies to that Steam listing; bundles and included extras can differ by storefront, so compare the exact platform product page before paying for an edition upgrade. Steam also lists single-player and online PvP features and says EA online activation and an EA account are required. See Steam’s current product and edition listing.
Quick Recap
Who should play Titanfall 2?
- Choose it for the campaign if you want a story-driven shooter and do not need multiplayer to justify the purchase.
- Choose it for the movement and combat if fast traversal and switching between Pilot and Titan play appeal to you.
- Be cautious if you mainly want PvP until you have checked the current service and player situation on your platform.
- Consider another shooter if you dislike demanding movement controls; review excerpts show that camera, aiming, and platforming were points of criticism for some reviewers.
