Before changing anything, identify the program showing the message, note whether it appears at startup or only when using an external monitor, and check whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Write down:
- The exact error wording, such as “TMM.dll is missing,” “TMM.dll was not found,” or “Error loading TMM.dll”
- The application or Windows process displaying it
- Whether the problem began after an update, driver change, cleanup, antivirus detection, or malware incident
- Whether the error appears during startup, sleep and resume, docking, or monitor changes
- Your Windows architecture: Settings → System → About → System type
Do not begin by copying a file from a DLL download sites website. Microsoft’s tmm.dll is the Transient Multi-Monitor Manager, a legacy Windows Vista display component. It is associated with Microsoft Windows, not Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a general-purpose application runtime. 1. Check whether the correct Windows file exists
The normal locations are:
C:WindowsSystem32TMM.dllfor the native copy, including the native 64-bit copy on 64-bit WindowsC:WindowsSysWOW64TMM.dllfor the 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows
On 32-bit Windows, check C:WindowsSystem32TMM.dll.
Open File Explorer, paste the appropriate path into the address bar, and press Enter. If the file is present, right-click it, choose Properties, and inspect:

The older 6.0.6001.18000 build sometimes associated with this file is a Vista-era version, not a universal latest version. Microsoft servicing records also list later x86 and x64 builds, so do not reject a legitimate file solely because its version differs from that older number. A file named TMM.dll outside the Windows directory deserves extra caution. An unrelated AviSynth video-filter plugin can use the same filename. If the error appears only in AviSynth, repair or reinstall AviSynth and its plugin rather than replacing a Windows system file.
2. Repair Windows components with DISM, then SFC
This is the safest first repair when tmm.dll is missing, corrupted, or rejected as “not designed to run on Windows.” DISM repairs the Windows component store first, giving System File Checker a usable source for replacing protected files.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands complete.
- Repeat the action that produced the error.
Successful results include a repaired component store, a message that SFC found and repaired corrupted files, or the disappearance of the original error after restarting. If DISM reports that it cannot repair the image, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run both commands again. If SFC reports files it could not repair, continue with the update and recovery steps below rather than downloading TMM.dll.

3. Install updates if the problem followed servicing
An incomplete update can leave a protected component in an inconsistent state.
On Windows 11:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Rerun DISM and SFC from the previous section.
On Windows 10, open Start → Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update → Check for updates, install what is offered, restart, and run the repair commands again.

If Windows Update itself is failing, run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter. If the tmm.dll message began immediately after a particular update, use Settings → System → Recovery → Advanced startup → Restart now on Windows 11, or the equivalent recovery options in Windows 10. From the recovery environment, choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Uninstall Updates and remove the most recent quality update only when the timing clearly matches.
4. Check the display driver and monitor configuration
Because TMM belongs to the Windows display path, investigate the graphics driver if the error began after:
- Connecting a monitor or docking station
- Changing display modes
- Resuming from sleep
- Installing a graphics driver
- Updating software supplied by the computer or GPU manufacturer
To check the driver:
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the listed graphics adapter and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider, date, and version.
- Choose Update Driver → Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If the issue started after a driver update, open the same dialog and use Roll Back Driver if the button is available. Otherwise, download the correct driver from the computer manufacturer or graphics-card manufacturer, uninstall the existing display driver only according to that manufacturer’s instructions, install the replacement, and restart.

It is optional, and the manufacturer’s driver remains the safest choice when a model-specific package is available.
Do not use Windows Features to add tmm.dll. It is not a feature you repair by enabling a checkbox, and reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not justified unless the error names a file from one of those products.
5. Check antivirus quarantine and scan for malware
If the file vanished suddenly, your security software may have quarantined it. Open your antivirus application and inspect Quarantine, History, or Protection history.

- The file was in the expected Windows directory
- Its digital signature identifies Microsoft
- The detection history suggests a mistaken detection rather than an active infection
- The antivirus product offers a documented restore action
Do not disable antivirus protection just to download a replacement DLL. After reviewing quarantine, run a full scan in Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options → Full scan. If malware is suspected, complete the scan before restoring any file.
A file with the right name but no Microsoft signature, an unexpected path, or suspicious creation history should not be treated as the Windows component. Let security software quarantine it and continue with Windows repair.
6. Understand what each error message means
The wording helps locate the failure, but it does not prove that the file itself is absent.
“The program can’t start because TMM.dll is missing”
Windows or an older application requested the file and could not find a usable copy. Check the Windows paths, then run DISM followed by SFC.
“TMM.dll was not found”
The calling process may be looking in the wrong location, or the correct architecture may not be available. A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows may use the copy in SysWOW64, while a 64-bit process uses the native copy in System32.
“Error loading TMM.dll. The specified module could not be found”
This can mean that TMM.dll exists but one of its dependencies is missing or incompatible. Do not respond by copying random DLLs into the application folder. Repair Windows, install pending updates, and identify the calling process.

“TMM.dll is not designed to run on Windows”
This commonly indicates corruption, an incompatible replacement, a damaged update, or a DLL with the right filename but the wrong contents. Check the signature and path, then use DISM and SFC.

System Restore is useful when the error began after a driver, update, or software change and a restore point predates the problem.
- Press Win+R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if available.
- Choose a point from before the error started.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes and select Finish.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without deliberately removing personal files, but review the affected-program list first. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.
If no suitable restore point exists, use Settings → System → Recovery and choose the appropriate reset or recovery option. Back up important files before using reset or installation media. Windows recovery is a last resort for system-wide corruption, not the first response to an application-specific error.
Why downloading TMM.dll is usually the wrong fix
There is no Microsoft TMM.dll redistributable intended for separate download. Random DLL sites can provide malware, an unsigned file, the wrong architecture, an obsolete Vista build, or a file that does not match the rest of the Windows component store. Copying it into System32 can also create additional loader or servicing problems.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair command. regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose the registration entry points it expects; Microsoft provides no instruction to manually register TMM.dll. Registration will not repair a missing Windows component or replace a damaged dependency.

Do not copy the file from System32 to an application directory unless the application’s developer specifically documents that procedure. If only one old application reports the error while Windows itself is healthy, repair or reinstall that application from its official installer and check its own updates. If only AviSynth reports it, address the AviSynth plugin rather than Windows.

FAQ
Is TMM.dll malware?
The genuine Windows component is published by Microsoft and belongs in the Windows directory. A same-named file in an application, downloads, temporary, or plugin folder may be unrelated and should be verified by path and digital signature.
Does Windows 11 or Windows 10 need a Vista-era TMM.dll download?
No. Do not install a Vista-era DLL manually. Use Windows servicing, updates, driver repair, System Restore, or recovery tools.
Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not for this file alone. Those runtimes are unrelated unless the exact error names one of their files.
What if the file exists but the error remains?
Check whether the calling program is 32-bit or 64-bit, verify the Microsoft signature, and consider a missing dependency or damaged component store. Run DISM and SFC, then identify the process producing the message.
