What cnbp_289.dll is
Available file records identify cnbp_289.dll as part of a Canon Inkjet Printer Driver. Historical Windows servicing references associate it with the prnca00d.inf Canon printer-driver family.

The file is most strongly associated with older Windows printer packages, particularly Windows 7-era records. Public records also describe a 32-bit copy, but the exact architecture, version, size, path, and package contents can vary. No current Canon page publicly confirms every printer model that has used this filename.

That means the filename alone is not enough to select a replacement. A copy intended for one Canon printer or an older Windows release may not work with another model.

On a 64-bit Windows installation, a Canon driver may place files within DriverStore or a printer-driver subdirectory rather than directly in C:WindowsSystem32. Do not assume that copying a 32-bit DLL into System32 is a valid repair. Windows may also report “module not found” when cnbp_289.dll exists but one of its dependencies is missing.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer driver
This is the most likely fix when the error began after a failed installation, printer replacement, Windows update, or incomplete removal.
Remove the printer
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the affected Canon printer.
- Select Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
If the printer is already gone, continue with the driver removal steps below. A deleted printer can leave its driver package or a Canon utility behind.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUninstall Canon software
- Press Windows + I.
- Open Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for entries beginning with Canon.
- Uninstall the relevant Canon Printer Driver, Canon MP Drivers, or model-specific Canon package.
- Restart Windows when prompted. If no restart is requested, restart manually.
Canon MP Drivers can include more than the print driver, including scanning and fax components. Remove only Canon software related to the affected device unless you still use another Canon printer or scanner.
Remove a leftover driver package
If the error returns after reinstalling, remove the old package from Print Server Properties:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
control printersand press Enter. - Select any printer, then choose Print server properties from the toolbar or menu.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the Canon driver that matches the removed printer.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when offered.
- Restart Windows.
If Windows refuses to remove the package because it is in use, stop the print spooler first:
- Press Windows + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Stop.
- Remove the driver through Print server properties.
- Return to Services, right-click Print Spooler, and select Start.
- Restart Windows.
Install the replacement
Use Canon’s support page or the original Canon installation media, and search by the exact printer model. Select the package intended for your Windows release and architecture. Do not choose a package merely because its filename contains cnbp_289.dll.
Run the installer as an administrator if necessary:

- Right-click the downloaded Canon installer.
- Select Show more options > Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Connect the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Print a Windows test page after setup completes.
To test the result, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select the Canon printer, choose Printer properties, and select Print Test Page. If the page prints without the DLL message, the driver package is working.
Manually comparing dozens of driver packages and guessing which one is stale can take longer than the repair itself. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and show what needs attention; its full-version repair performs the driver installation, but the exact Canon model-specific package remains the definitive choice for this file.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a damaged or wrongly identified driver file. Do not disable antivirus protection simply to copy an unknown DLL.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event naming
cnbp_289.dll, a Canon driver, or the printer installation. - Expand the event and review its path and detection details.
Restore the file only when its location clearly belongs to the installed Canon driver package and the security product identifies it as a false positive. If the file is in a temporary folder, a user profile, or an unrelated application directory, leave it quarantined and scan the computer.
The safer response is usually to uninstall the Canon package and reinstall it from Canon’s official support source. If the security product blocks the new installer, update its definitions and submit the installer or detection for review through the security vendor.
Fix 3: Update Windows and repair Windows components
Use DISM and SFC when the problem appeared alongside broader Windows corruption, failed updates, servicing errors, or messages involving protected system files. These commands repair Windows components; they do not reinstall a Canon printer package.
First install pending updates:
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete. Try the Canon printer again.
Success means DISM completes without reporting an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If SFC says it could not repair some files, do not repeatedly run the same command. Review the log at:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
If the log mentions prnca00d.inf or CNBP_289.DLL, return to the Canon driver removal and reinstall procedure. If it mentions unrelated protected Windows files, continue Windows repair troubleshooting separately.

Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing which component changed is inefficient, especially when the missing file belongs to a printer package. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and identify Windows repair issues; its full-version repair handles the automated changes, while reinstalling the Canon package remains necessary when the driver itself is missing.
Fix 4: Inspect the path and the application requesting the file
The program named in the error may be a stale Canon utility, printer monitor, scanner component, or leftover shortcut rather than the Windows print spooler.
Check the application:
- Note the executable or program name shown in the error.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for that program or related Canon software.
- Uninstall it if it belongs to a printer you no longer use.
- Restart Windows.
If the message appears only when launching an old shortcut, right-click the shortcut, select Properties, and inspect its Target. A stale shortcut can continue calling a removed Canon utility.
Event Viewer may provide the attempted path:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time the DLL message appeared.
- Record the application name and path.
A copy in a Canon driver directory is more plausible than one in a random application folder. A copy outside a Canon installation path should be scanned and treated as untrusted until its signature and origin are verified.
Fix 5: Check Device Manager for driver leftovers
Device Manager may reveal a partially removed printer or an unknown device.
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the affected Canon device, an unknown device, or a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant entry and select Uninstall device.
- Select Attempt to remove the driver for this device if Windows offers that option.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct Canon package again.
Do not uninstall unrelated chipset, graphics, storage, or audio devices while trying to repair a printer DLL. Device Manager is useful for identifying stale hardware entries, but the authoritative repair is still the printer manufacturer’s package.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not use regsvr32 as a missing-DLL fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 cnbp_289.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration procedures such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that cnbp_289.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component.
If you run the command and receive a “module failed to load” message, that does not repair the printer driver. Even a successful registration would not replace missing INF files, dependencies, architecture-specific files, or spooler configuration.
Do not download the DLL separately
Avoid random DLL download sites and loose copies posted in forums. A downloaded file can have the wrong architecture, an incompatible historical version, missing dependencies, or malicious modifications. It can also hide the real problem: a broken Canon driver package or a stale application still trying to load an old component.

Do not place an unverified copy in System32, SysWOW64, DriverStore, or a Canon folder. On 64-bit Windows, the correct 32-bit or 64-bit components are selected by the complete driver installer, not by manually matching a filename.
FAQ
Is cnbp_289.dll a Windows system file?
It is associated with a Canon inkjet printer driver rather than being a general-purpose Windows component. Historical records connect it with older Canon driver packages.
Which Canon printer models use it?
The exact models have not been publicly verified. Identify the printer model first and install its matching Canon package rather than searching by DLL filename.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. The correct driver installer places files in the required locations and registers the associated package metadata.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file exists?
A required dependency may be missing, the file may be the wrong architecture, or the application may be searching the wrong directory.
Recommended Free Tools
What if I removed the printer months ago?
Remove leftover Canon software and the driver package through Installed apps and Print Server Properties. Also check for a stale startup utility or shortcut that still requests the DLL.
Does SFC repair cnbp_289.dll?
Usually not. SFC primarily repairs protected Windows components. A Canon printer-driver file normally requires removal and reinstallation of the Canon package.
Can I use Windows Features to fix it?
Windows Features are not the normal repair path for a Canon printer DLL. Enable or disable a Windows feature only when a separate application specifically requires that feature.
What if the error remains after reinstalling?
Check the full path in Event Viewer, verify that the correct printer model and Windows architecture were selected, inspect antivirus quarantine, and determine whether another dependency is missing. If the printer is obsolete, use the final Canon driver available for that model and Windows release rather than substituting a loose DLL.
