How to play NYT Connections

Connections gives you 16 words and asks you to divide them into four groups of four. Every group is linked by a common relationship, but some words may appear to fit more than one category. The groups are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is generally the most straightforward, followed by green, blue and purple.

You have four incorrect guesses available. A submitted group disappears when it is correct; the game ends when you find all four groups or use all four mistakes. The date and puzzle number matter here: this is the historical Friday, July 11, 2025 puzzle, No. 761—not a July 11, 2026 puzzle, which falls on a different day of the week.

Today’s NYT Connections answers for July 11, 2025

Spoilers ahead. The complete solution is below.

Yellow: Companies that have become verbs

GOOGLE, PHOTOSHOP, UBER, ZOOM

Each entry began as a company or product name and is now commonly used as a verb. You can Google information, photoshop an image, Uber somewhere, or Zoom someone. Some descriptions call this category “trademarks that have become verbs,” while broader versions call them companies that have become verbs; the four intended answers are the same.

Green: Silly person

DODO, GOOF, GOOSE, YAHOO

All four words can describe someone foolish, silly or lacking good sense. A dodo, goof, goose or yahoo can each be used as an informal insult for a silly person.

Blue: Kinds of songs

FOLK, LOVE, SIREN, SWAN

Add “song” to the first two entries to get folk song and love song. A siren song is an alluring or tempting call, while a swan song is a final performance or work. The words therefore connect through familiar song types and phrases.

Purple: Homophones of synonyms for “despicable”

FOWL, MIEN, OFFAL, VIAL

This is the wordplay group. When spoken aloud, the entries sound like negative adjectives:

  • FOWL sounds like foul.
  • MIEN sounds like mean.
  • OFFAL sounds like awful.
  • VIAL sounds like vile.

Those sound-alike words are synonyms or near-synonyms for something morally bad, unpleasant or despicable. The spelling disguises the connection: fowl is a bird, mien is a person’s appearance or manner, offal is animal entrails, and a vial is a small container.

Why this board can be tricky

The puzzle places several tempting decoys together. GOOSE might initially suggest birds alongside FOWL and SWAN, but it belongs with the words for a silly person. Likewise, LOVE and SWAN can both evoke familiar phrases, while VIAL looks like an ordinary noun until you say it aloud.

The cleanest starting point is usually the yellow group: GOOGLE, PHOTOSHOP, UBER and ZOOM share a modern usage pattern. Once those are removed, the four informal words for a foolish person become easier to spot. The remaining eight words then divide between song-related phrases and the purple homophone trick.
