- Read the theme as a category. Every theme answer is a famous spaceship name from the Star Trek franchise. Think about what kind of vessel the theme is naming, not the show’s characters.
- Look for the spangram first. It is the longest answer in the grid and has nine letters. It touches the left edge of the board on row four and the right edge on row five, so it cuts across the whole puzzle.
- Use the spangram to frame the rest. Once you have the spangram, the five ship names fill in the remaining letters. Each ship name is a single word and is not hidden inside the spangram.

How Strands hints work
Strands is a themed word-search-style puzzle. Words can run in any direction, letters cannot be reused, and words cannot cross. Try Hard Guides describes the hint system: every three qualifying non-theme words you find unlocks a hint that highlights one of the theme answers. This mechanic is described by a third-party guide, so check the in-game hint behavior if your version differs.
You can play Strands on desktop or mobile through the NYT Games site. TechRadar notes that a new puzzle appears at midnight in each time zone, so the September 8, 2025 puzzle is no longer the current daily game.
