TOKYO SCRAMBLE has drawn a generally unfavorable critical response, though a few reviewers see an unusual idea worth exploring. At Metacritic’s October 8, 2026 snapshot, it held a 43/100 from 11 critic reviews. Whether it might still appeal depends largely on your appetite for demanding, trial-and-error stealth and its eccentric dinosaur-survival premise.

What kind of game is TOKYO SCRAMBLE?

TOKYO SCRAMBLE is a survival puzzle-action game released on February 11, 2026, exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo describes a story in which Anne wakes after an accident in a subterranean network inhabited by Zino, mysterious dinosaur-like creatures, and tries to reach the surface.

The core challenge is avoiding enemies by staying out of sight and moving quietly. Nintendo says players can use in-game apps to distract foes and must consider enemy sight and hearing, timing, quick decisions, and Anne’s heart rate. The story also includes a teen drama about four friends and their future dreams, presented through text messages. These are Nintendo’s descriptions of the game, not a critical assessment.

What do critics think of TOKYO SCRAMBLE?

Metacritic’s page showed a 43/100 from 11 critic reviews on October 8, 2026, placing the game in its “Generally Unfavorable” category. The listed reviews broke down as zero positive, four mixed, and seven negative. This is a dated snapshot of a live aggregate, so both the score and review count may change.

TOKYO SCRAMBLE Standard - Nintendo Switch 2 [Digital Code]
  • One day, high schooler Anne is on her way to meet up with friends, when her subway car abruptly plunges through a fissure in the earth.
  • When the 18-year-old comes to, she finds herself in a strange and unfamiliar land.

Metacritic also showed a separate 5.6/10 from 27 user ratings at that snapshot. That is a user-rating sample, not part of the critic score, and should not be treated as a professional-review consensus.

Why many reviews are negative

Critics commonly object to stealth encounters that they describe as frustrating, repetitive, or dependent on trial and error. Reviews also raise concerns about rough presentation or performance and weak or awkwardly handled storytelling. Cubed3 found promise in the concept but criticized what it called “monster maze monotony.” MonsterVine similarly argued that interesting mechanics were undermined by frustrating gameplay, choppy performance, and poorly written characters. These are individual reviewers’ judgments, not universal findings.

  • CLASSIC POPULAR GAME: Play a strategic 2-player game designed by Richard Garfield in the universe of the best-selling game King of Tokyo.
  • FRESH NEW MECHANICS: Rediscover the fun of a dice game with an extra dose of strategy and tension thanks to the Fame and Destruction board!
  • ASYMMETRIC PLAYER POWERS: Master six unique powers that make the game asymmetrical, with six redesigned monsters!
  • THRILLING NEW ART: Enjoy the graphic style of Quentin Regnes, who has enriched the King of Tokyo universe.

Why some reviewers are more receptive

The response is not uniformly dismissive. Some critics acknowledge ambition, an unusual premise, or occasional inventive ideas. In a May 2026 review, Pure Nintendo called it a decent survival game, noted graphical hiccups and challenging sections, and judged it a better experience than the reviewer had expected from online discussion. That more favorable take offers a counterpoint, but it does not change the generally unfavorable aggregate.

What the dated reception snapshots show

Nintendo Life’s February 18, 2026 reception roundup described early reactions as ranging from “a neat experiment” to “campy” and “very rough.” It reported an OpenCritic average of 37 after 11 reviews at that time. That is a historical figure from a different aggregator and date; it is not a current replacement for Metacritic’s October snapshot.

In the same roundup, Nintendo Life quoted MonsterVine reviewer Spencer Legacy: “The stealth mechanics that serve as the very core of Tokyo Scramble are more irritating than compelling, especially since you die in a single hit.” The quotation is Legacy’s assessment, as attributed by Nintendo Life.

Is TOKYO SCRAMBLE worth it?

It may be worth considering if you are drawn to a strange underground dinosaur-survival setup, like learning stealth systems through repeated attempts, or are especially curious about its cooperative feature. The review pattern makes it a harder recommendation for players who want smooth stealth, consistently clear encounters, polished technical presentation, or straightforward storytelling.

  • Less likely to suit you: Trial-and-error deaths, rough performance, or writing that reviewers have called weak would quickly outweigh an unusual premise for you.
  • One distinctive draw: Nintendo says up to four players can work together to control Anne through GameShare, either via GameChat or local wireless.

GameShare through GameChat requires Nintendo Switch 2 and GameChat for each participant. Nintendo notes that online features may require Nintendo Switch Online and a Nintendo Account, and that multiplayer may require additional accessories; its notice does not specify which accessories.
