Rainbow Six Siege is worth trying in 2026 if you want tense, coordinated, team-based tactical shooting and you are willing to learn maps, operators and systems before you enjoy it. Critics have been broadly positive about its core loop, the game can be played free of charge, and the main reservations are a steep learning curve, paid competitive access and anti-cheat, which Ubisoft has openly said it is still working on.

What critics have said

Metacritic showed a critic Metascore of 79 (“Generally Favorable”) from 10 critic reviews: seven positive, three mixed and none negative. Its user score was 6.4 from 247 ratings. Those figures were displayed when the page was checked on October 8, 2026, and they will move as reviews are added, so treat them as a snapshot rather than a fixed verdict.

The individual reviews the aggregate draws on agree on the strength of the tactical core but disagree on how much the 2025 refresh adds.

Outlet Score Reviewer and date What it praised What it questioned
IGN 80/100 Justin Koreis, June 24, 2025 The tense, strategic Bomb mode, the satisfaction of mastering Operators and the thrill of outwitting an enemy squad Limits to destruction, and unlockables that may pressure players to spend
PCGamesN 80/100 Date not stated in the Metacritic excerpt Quality-of-life and balance work, and the novelty of Dual Front Remastered maps and operators felt like familiar ground
TheGamer 70/100 Date not stated in the Metacritic excerpt Not stated in the excerpt Called the evolution uneven

Across these reviews the consistent points are the tactical depth and the demanding learning curve. The disagreement is over whether the refresh justifies the free-to-play progression model.

What Siege X changed

Ubisoft launched Siege X on June 10, 2025, alongside Year 10 Season 2. Ubisoft describes it as the biggest evolution in the game’s history. The main changes were:

  • Dual Front: a permanent 6v6 mode. Ubisoft’s roadmap describes it as “A unique, permanent 6v6 game mode set on a new map and with new gameplay elements, such as in-match events and respawns.”
  • Updated visuals: new lighting and textures for five maps at launch.
  • Environment: more destructible objects.
  • Movement: improved rappel movement.
  • Pick-and-ban: a new system for choosing operators before a match.
  • Communication and information: communication pings and weapon inspection.
  • Audio: an overhaul of reverb and sound propagation, which Ubisoft says is meant to make sound localization more accurate.

Ubisoft’s roadmap page is now titled simply “Rainbow Six Siege”, and at the time of checking it listed Year 11 Season 3 as the latest release. The “Siege X” name refers to the 2025 overhaul rather than a separate game, so a title that says “Siege X” is describing that update, not a different product.

  • Destruction is more than chaos: it is a key tool for your success. Use the environment to your advantage – turn walls into windows of opportunity.

  • Access to Ranked and Siege Cup is unlocked at level 50. Dual Front mode is not supported on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One

Free Access versus paid content

Ubisoft’s Free Access listing is the entry point. The Ubisoft US store currently labels the product this way. The split between free and paid content is the single most important thing to understand before you install.

Area Free Access (per Ubisoft) Requires payment (per Ubisoft)
Playlists Quick Match and Unranked Ranked playlists
Competitive events Not stated as included Siege Cup
Operators A selection of operators Additional operators
Modes Dual Front (not available on PS4 or Xbox One) Not stated as paid
Cosmetics Not stated as included Cosmetics

Players who already owned and had played the game before the 2025 change kept their progression, inventory and operators, according to Ubisoft’s launch guidance. New players should not assume Free Access is the full competitive feature set. It is enough to learn the game, but the ranked ladder and the operator roster beyond the free selection are behind payment.

Platforms and PC requirements

Where it runs

Ubisoft lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC. PC access runs through Ubisoft Connect, the Epic Games Store and Steam. The launch page also lists Ubisoft+. Ubisoft’s 2025 news post included Amazon Luna among launch platforms, but the current launch page does not name it, so confirm current availability in your region before relying on it.

The Dual Front mode is not available on PS4 or Xbox One. If you are on one of those consoles, the 6v6 mode is not part of your experience.

PC minimum and recommended specifications

These are Ubisoft’s published requirements for the Free Access listing. They are not benchmark results, and Ubisoft may revise them, so check the store page before you buy hardware.

  • Operating system and API: Windows 10 or 11, with DirectX 12.
  • Minimum CPU: Ryzen 3 3100 or Intel i3-8100.
  • Minimum graphics: GTX 1650 4 GB, RX 5500 XT 4 GB or Intel Arc A380 6 GB.
  • Minimum memory and storage: 8 GB RAM and a 65 GB SSD.
  • Recommended: 16 GB RAM, with stronger components than the minimum tier. The exact recommended models are on Ubisoft’s store page.

Setup note on audio

Positional audio is central to the Siege X audio overhaul, and Hardcore Gamer’s review excerpt says the game particularly invites headphone use. Headphones are not required, but they are the practical choice if sound localization matters to how you play.

Is it right for you?

The critics agree on who the game suits. The reviews describe a demanding experience, and the strongest praise comes from players who want to take part in deliberate, team-based play.

Good fit

  • You enjoy coordinated team play and planning rounds with a squad.
  • You are willing to learn maps, operators and their gadgets over many matches.
  • You want to try the core game without paying up front, using Quick Match and Unranked.

Less suited

  • You want immediate, low-pressure matches or mostly solo play.
  • You need a competitive ladder without paying, since Ranked and Siege Cup sit behind payment.
  • You are bothered by unlockables that tempt you to spend, a concern the IGN review raised.

Cheating and competitive fairness

Ubisoft has not claimed the problem is solved. PC Gamer reported on October 8, 2025 that Ubisoft game director Joshua Mills and creative director Alex Karpazis acknowledged anti-cheat had not kept pace with the surge in players after Free Access, and they outlined priorities for improving it. In a separate interview published October 23, 2025, Alexander Karpazis, Ubisoft creative director, said of eliminating cheating: “Absolutely. That’s a message that we keep on having to share with our community. It’s not something where we’ll receive zero percent cheating.” That is a statement that zero cheating is not a realistic promise, not a measurement of how common cheating is today. The available sources do not give a current cheating rate.

Verdict

If you want a tactical shooter that rewards planning, communication and mastery, Rainbow Six Siege is a strong choice, and the critical consensus supports that. Start with Free Access to see whether the learning curve and the team-based pressure suit you. Before you spend money, read the Free Access and paid table above and decide whether ranked play and the wider operator roster matter enough to justify the cost. If you are on PS4 or Xbox One, remember that Dual Front is not available to you.
