Tom Clancy’s The Division Crashing on PC: What to Try

Start with launcher file verification, then check the original The Division’s published PC requirements and isolate possible connection or software conflicts carefully.

If the original Tom Clancy’s The Division crashes or will not start on PC, begin by verifying its game files in the launcher where you own it. Ubisoft says this can restore missing or corrupted files. Then check the game’s published system requirements and use symptom-matched, reversible tests rather than applying unverified tweaks all at once.

1. Verify the game files in your launcher

This is the clearest first step supported by Ubisoft. Ubisoft Help says: “If your game crashes or is unable to start on PC, you can verify the game files in Ubisoft Connect PC and restore any missing or corrupted files.” Ubisoft’s file-verification instructions say to open your game library, select The Division, click the gear icon beside Play, and choose Verify files.

If you bought the game through Steam or Epic Games Store, verify it in that storefront’s launcher instead. Ubisoft directs players with those versions to use the relevant launcher. Once verification finishes, try starting the game again before changing other settings.

2. Check whether your PC meets the listed requirements

Steam identifies this as the original Tom Clancy’s The Division, developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft, with a release date of March 7, 2016. Its requirements are useful for identifying a possible hardware or operating-system mismatch, but meeting them does not guarantee a crash-free experience. Steam’s game support listing gives these specifications:

Steam notes that laptop graphics hardware is suitable when its performance is on par with the minimum configuration. These are the product’s published requirements, not a diagnosis of why a particular PC crashes.

3. If the crash coincides with a connection interruption, check for an outage

If the game disconnects or fails around a network interruption rather than simply closing during play, check whether Ubisoft reports maintenance or a service outage. Ubisoft’s general PC connectivity guide discusses checking service status. It is connectivity guidance, not a game-specific crash diagnosis; an outage check is most relevant when the symptoms point to a connection problem.

4. If another program may be interfering, test with a clean boot

For a crash that began after installing or updating other software, a clean boot can help test whether a background program is interfering. Ubisoft’s connectivity guide describes a clean boot as a way to check for software interference, but does not establish it as a confirmed fix for The Division crashes.

  1. Use Microsoft’s instructions for performing a clean boot for your Windows version, changing only the startup services and apps needed for the test.
  2. Try launching the game in that state and note whether the same crash occurs.
  3. Restore normal startup settings afterward. If the crash disappears, re-enable items methodically to narrow down a possible conflict rather than leaving startup services disabled.

5. For a startup crash, record exactly where it stops

“Crashing on startup” is a useful description, but not a diagnosis. Note whether the game closes before its window appears, during loading, or after reaching the main menu, and write down any error message. That record helps distinguish a launch failure from a crash later in play and gives official support something specific to investigate.

6. For a crash to desktop, change one thing at a time

Players use “crashing to desktop” to describe an abrupt return to Windows, but that symptom alone does not establish the cause. After file verification, avoid making several system or game changes together. If you choose to test a setting or temporarily close a background app, record the original state, change just one variable, and check whether the same crash returns. This makes the result easier to interpret and the change easier to undo.

7. Treat DirectX suggestions as unverified for this game

Community discussions mention DirectX 11/12 selection, but the evidence available does not establish changing DirectX settings as a reliable fix for the original game. Steam lists DirectX 11 as the required version. Do not switch versions based only on a generic tip; first confirm that the setting applies to your installed edition and record how to restore its previous value.

8. Back up configuration files before considering community tweaks

Community-maintained references and player posts discuss configuration changes, but they do not guarantee that a particular change will resolve a crash. Avoid deleting configuration files based on vague instructions. If you decide to test a specific, applicable change, make a copy of the original file first, change only that item, and keep the copy available to restore. The cited community references are PCGamingWiki’s page for the game and a Steam Community discussion about crashing to desktop; treat them as anecdotal leads, not official support instructions.

What to send Ubisoft if the crash continues

If none of the tests changes the problem, contact Ubisoft Support and include the storefront you use, your Windows version, your PC’s hardware, the point at which the crash occurs, and the exact error message if one appears. Include which tests you tried and what happened, so support can assess the issue without guessing which changes were made.
