The list below is an editorial selection of ten notable games, informed by available mobile rankings and regional activity data—not a definitive global order. “Popular” can mean downloads, active users, spending, or portal plays, and those measures describe different audiences and behavior.
How this 2021 list is ranked
The strongest comparable annual figure in the available sources is a worldwide mobile-download ranking: App Annie identified Bridge Race as an .io hypercasual game and placed it fourth among mobile games by downloads in 2021. That is a rank, not a player count, and it does not establish browser-game popularity.
Other useful evidence is narrower. Sensor Tower tracked several .io games in Brazil during Q1 2021, reporting weekly active users and downloads. SocialPeta’s annual Google Play analysis also included Worms Zone .io among top downloaded games, with figures limited to Google Play rather than third-party Android platforms. These sources cannot be combined into one global top-ten score.
Accordingly, the ten entries are presented as a reader-friendly retrospective, not an exact rank order. Their inclusion reflects a mix of documented mobile activity, genre significance, and availability as recognizable .io-style games. Current portal play counts are not treated as evidence of 2021 popularity.
#1 Best Overall
10 notable .io games from 2021
1. Bridge Race
Bridge Race is the clearest annual-download standout in the available evidence: App Annie’s worldwide 2021 mobile game downloads ranking placed it at number four and classified it as “.io (Hypercasual).” The figure is a ranking position, not a download total. It is evidence of mobile reach, not proof that it was the fourth most popular .io game across browser and mobile platforms combined. App Annie’s State of Mobile 2022 presents downloads separately from consumer spend and monthly active users.
2. Worms Zone .io
Worms Zone .io has one of the clearest regional engagement records in the source set. In Brazil during Q1 2021, Sensor Tower reported weekly active users rising from 1.4 million to a peak above 2.2 million; downloads peaked at 286,000 in late February. These are Brazil-and-quarter figures, not worldwide annual totals. Sensor Tower’s Brazil Q1 2021 report also tracks other snake and territory games.

3. slither.io
A landmark in the .io genre, slither.io pairs snake-like growth with real-time competition. Sensor Tower reported that its weekly active users in Brazil during Q1 2021 began at approximately 1.5 million and reached more than 1.7 million; downloads peaked at 209,000 in mid-February. Those measurements describe one market and quarter, not its global standing for the year.
4. Snake.io
Snake.io offers another take on the growing-snake formula. In Brazil during Q1 2021, Sensor Tower recorded weekly active users increasing from approximately 618,000 to 748,000, while downloads peaked above 213,000 in late March. The download peak and active-user trend are different metrics, and both apply only to Brazil in that quarter.

5. Slink.io
Slink.io appears alongside Worms Zone .io, slither.io, Snake.io, and Paper.io 2 in Sensor Tower’s Brazil Q1 2021 coverage. The cited summary does not provide a comparable figure for Slink.io, so its inclusion here signals that it was tracked in that regional report—not a claim about its rank or audience size.
6. Paper.io 2
Paper.io 2 is the territory-capture entry in the group of games tracked by Sensor Tower in Brazil during Q1 2021. Its inclusion in that report establishes relevant regional coverage, but the available summary does not supply a specific activity or download figure that can be compared with the named snake-game figures.
Rank #4
7. Agar.io
Agar.io is an influential early .io game and a useful reference point for understanding the genre’s appeal: grow by consuming smaller cells while avoiding larger ones. Its historical importance is not the same thing as a measured 2021 popularity rank. The reviewed sources offer genre context, not a comparable annual 2021 figure for Agar.io. Snokido’s .io games guide provides broad genre context.
8. Diep.io
Diep.io shows how broadly the .io label can cover different play styles: rather than controlling a growing snake or claiming territory, players steer tanks and engage in arena combat. It is a notable genre example, but the available sources do not establish its 2021 global audience or a place in a common ranking. Tom’s Guide’s .io game guide describes it alongside other genre examples.
9. Bloxd.io
Bloxd.io is a browser-game example associated with the period: Gameflare describes it as published on April 3, 2021. That publication date does not establish how many people played it during the year. Gameflare’s current category ordering and play counts are present-day portal context, not historical 2021 measurements. Gameflare’s current .io category should be read accordingly.
10. Other .io games in the 2021 mobile mix
The category includes mobile-first hypercasual games as well as browser-era arena games, so “.io” is not a single gameplay style or measurement bucket. SocialPeta’s 2021 mobile white paper names Worms Zone .io among Google Play’s top downloaded games for January–December 2021; its Google Play figures exclude third-party Android platforms. This adds annual mobile-download context, but it does not identify a tenth globally ranked game across platforms. SocialPeta’s 2021 Global Mobile Gaming White Paper documents that scope.

| Game or source | Metric and geography | Time period and platform scope | What can be concluded |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bridge Race | Rank 4 in worldwide mobile game downloads | Calendar-year 2021; mobile apps | A strong annual mobile-download result; not a browser-and-mobile .io ranking. |
| Worms Zone .io | Weekly active users from 1.4 million to above 2.2 million; downloads peaked at 286,000 | Brazil, Q1 2021; app activity and downloads | Substantial tracked activity in that market and quarter; not global annual totals. |
| slither.io | Weekly active users from approximately 1.5 million to above 1.7 million; downloads peaked at 209,000 | Brazil, Q1 2021; app activity and downloads | Regional activity and a download peak; not a worldwide year-end rank. |
| Snake.io | Weekly active users from approximately 618,000 to 748,000; downloads peaked above 213,000 | Brazil, Q1 2021; app activity and downloads | Regional activity and a download peak; not directly comparable to worldwide annual downloads. |
| Worms Zone .io in SocialPeta | Included among Google Play’s top downloaded games; a comparable rank is not stated in the cited summary | January–December 2021; Google Play, excluding third-party Android platforms | Annual Google Play download context, with a narrower store scope. |
Downloads count acquisition, while active-user measures describe people using a game over a defined period. Consumer spending is another distinct measure. A mobile app report does not capture browser plays in the same way, and a portal’s current play count cannot be retroactively treated as a 2021 total. For those reasons, the numbers above are best read within their own stated market, period, and platform.
Why these games represent different sides of the genre
- Snake survival: slither.io, Snake.io, Worms Zone .io, and Slink.io center on growing while navigating opponents and hazards.
- Territory control: Paper.io 2 turns arena movement into a contest over claimed space.
- Cell growth: Agar.io is an influential early example of the grow-and-avoid loop.
- Combat: Diep.io uses tanks and arena battles rather than a snake or territory mechanic.
- Hypercasual mobile: Bridge Race shows how the .io label also appears on mobile games built around short, accessible play.
- Browser variety: Bloxd.io illustrates the continuing presence of browser titles, though its publication date alone cannot establish historical popularity.
Sources and scope
The annual worldwide mobile ranking comes from App Annie’s State of Mobile 2022 — Top Apps & Games of 2021. Brazil Q1 app figures come from Sensor Tower’s Performance of Top .io Games Apps in Brazil. SocialPeta’s 2021 Global Mobile Gaming White Paper supplies Google Play context. Gameflare’s current category page, Tom’s Guide’s genre guide, and Snokido’s .io games page help identify portal and gameplay context, but do not provide a consistent historical popularity dataset.
