What are the hardest esports games to rank up in and reach the top? There is no reliable, current cross-game measurement that can settle the question. This is an editorial ranking, not an objectively verified leaderboard: it weighs how many skills a game demands, how much a player can control match outcomes, and how clearly a ladder reflects skill. Climbing a visible rank is not the same as proving that a game’s best players are more skilled than another game’s.
How this ranking works—and what it cannot prove
Competitive games use different formats, skill measures and progression systems. A rank badge may not be a direct reading of matchmaking skill, and reaching a top rank is not the same challenge as learning a game or competing professionally. The ranking below is a reasoned comparison of the kinds of challenges players face, not a measured difficulty score. Positions are especially subjective where current, comparable ladder evidence is unavailable.
- Skill breadth: How many different abilities a player must apply consistently, from execution to decision-making.
- Individual control: How much a player can influence a result when teammates or opponents also shape the match.
- Progress visibility: Whether the public rank closely tracks the game’s underlying matchmaking estimate, and how stable that relationship is.
These are useful ways to think about a difficult climb, not universally measured criteria. A 2020 peer-reviewed study used rank-distribution references from 2018 for games including Dota 2, League of Legends, CS:GO, Overwatch and Rainbow Six Siege; those historical figures cannot establish a current difficulty order. A scoping review likewise documents game-specific definitions of expertise, rather than one universal threshold for being elite. The 10 hardest esports games to climb in
The order is an editorial judgment. For several games below, the available evidence does not establish current ladder rules or show that their climb is harder than another title’s. Treat the ranking as a practical shortlist of demanding competitive games, not a claim backed by a shared statistical scale.

1. StarCraft II
StarCraft II is a strong candidate for the top spot because it is a solo real-time strategy game: the player must manage several competing demands without a teammate to share execution or decision-making. That makes each match an unusually direct test of individual consistency. Blizzard’s ladder-revamp post describes an MMR-based ladder, a separate league and division display, and Grandmaster activity and demotion rules. It is historical patch-era documentation, not confirmation of today’s exact policy, so current client rules should take precedence. Blizzard’s StarCraft II ladder revamp.
2. League of Legends
League of Legends places a player in a team game where individual decisions interact with teammates’ actions, while the climb itself is not a simple readout of a public badge. Riot’s May 28, 2026 support article says hidden MMR is used for matchmaking and ladder placement, while visible rank and LP provide a progression layer. It says LP gains and losses can differ depending on how MMR relates to rank. Riot’s 2026 discussion also describes changes to MMR-to-rank mapping intended to better distinguish skill levels within rank bands. That makes displayed progress a system-calibration issue as well as a match-to-match challenge; it does not prove League is objectively harder than the other games here. 3. Dota 2
Dota 2 earns a high place as an editorial pick for the breadth of strategic and execution demands associated with a team-based multiplayer online battle arena. But the available comparison material only includes historical rank-distribution references; it does not establish current ladder mechanics or prove that Dota 2 is harder to climb than League or another team game. Its placement is therefore a judgment, not a research finding.
4. VALORANT
VALORANT combines individual aim and decision-making with team coordination, and Riot’s explanations show why visible progress can diverge from an underlying skill estimate. Riot describes MMR as separate from visible rank and Rank Rating (RR), with convergence mechanics intended to move rank toward MMR. Its competitive-system explanation says wins, losses and match decisiveness matter, with personal performance weighted especially early in a player’s competitive evaluation; it describes top-rank evaluation as more win- and decisiveness-focused. These are older system explanations, so they should not be read as a complete statement of every current rule. Riot’s VALORANT competitive-system explanation; Riot’s Rank Rating explanation.

5. Counter-Strike 2
Counter-Strike 2 is an editorial choice for a demanding climb because success in a tactical shooter can hinge on precise execution alongside team decisions. The historical cross-game study cited above included CS:GO rank references from 2018, but those data do not describe current Counter-Strike 2 ranks or establish a comparable difficulty score. This placement is an opinion, not a claim about a verified current ladder mechanic.
6. Rocket League
Rocket League is a plausible high-difficulty pick because its competitive play asks for technical control and quick decisions in a format where coordination also matters. The official competitive-rank update says a playlist placement may be adjusted upward based on a player’s rank in other competitive playlists, reflecting analyzed skill transfer between playlists. That illustrates how placement can depend on more than a single playlist’s results; it does not establish that Rocket League is harder to climb than a shooter or strategy game. The cited update followed tests beginning in 2024, so consult the current game for live rules. Rocket League’s competitive-rank update.

7. Rainbow Six Siege
Rainbow Six Siege is included as an editorial pick for the tactical and coordinated demands of team-based competition. The 2020 study’s Rainbow Six Siege rank reference dates to July 2018, so it cannot establish today’s rank distribution or the relative difficulty of climbing. No current ladder rule in the reviewed sources supports a more precise comparison here.
8. Overwatch 2
Overwatch 2 makes the list as another team-based game in which players must contribute within a coordinated match. The historical study cited above used an Overwatch rank reference from August 2018; it does not establish current Overwatch 2 progression or rank difficulty. Its position is an editorial judgment, not a result derived from that older comparison.

9. Apex Legends
Apex Legends is a reasonable candidate for a difficult climb in the battle-royale category, where match outcomes involve both individual play and team circumstances. The available sources do not establish its current ladder details or provide a directly comparable difficulty measure, so this entry is a genre-based editorial judgment rather than a sourced ranking result.
10. Tekken 8
Tekken 8 rounds out the list as a fighting-game pick: its challenge is concentrated in individual execution and decisions against an opponent, rather than coordination with a team. This ranking does not claim that Tekken 8’s ladder is harder than the other games listed; the available evidence does not supply current, comparable rank data for it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why visible rank can mislead
A rank badge is not always the matchmaking system’s full account of a player’s skill. In League of Legends, Riot says hidden MMR informs matchmaking and ladder placement, while visible rank and LP show progression; mismatches can produce uneven LP gains or losses. In VALORANT, Riot has also described MMR as distinct from rank and RR, with convergence intended to bring visible rank closer to the estimate. These examples show why a slow-looking climb is not, by itself, proof that a game has the most difficult ladder. The precise implementations can change, and the VALORANT explanations are older. What “reaching the top” means
There are at least three different goals hidden in that phrase: reaching a game’s highest visible rank, becoming a top-ranked ladder player, and competing at the professional level. They overlap, but are not interchangeable. A ladder measures performance within its own matchmaking and progression design; professional play brings a different competitive context. Nor is there a universal definition of “elite”: the scoping review notes that included studies define expertise in different ways. One included StarCraft I study used being in the top 10% of an official ranking as part of its study-specific definition, not as a universal esports cutoff.
