The itch.io results page also reports 502 submitted entries and 6,335 ratings overall, with an average of 12.6 ratings per game and a median of 8.
Why does GitHub’s list include more than the winners?
GitHub’s January 13, 2022 roundup, by Lee Reilly, presents 30 featured games in an editorial sequence. It is not the complete ranked-results table, and its order should not be read as a rank. The roundup describes its entries as games “rated and reviewed by the folks that created them” and points readers to hundreds more on itch.io.

What kinds of games did the BUG theme produce?
Game Off is GitHub’s annual game jam, hosted on itch.io. The 2021 event ran from November 1 to December 1, with ratings open through January 3, 2022. Its theme, BUG, was deliberately open to interpretation: participants could explore insects and other organisms, software defects, irritation, puns, or another meaning. The official jam page put it plainly: “As usual, you may interpret ‘BUG’ however you wish …” It also reassured participants that nobody was judging code quality and that bugs were expected and accepted.
The roundup shows how differently teams took that prompt. It describes Bug on the moon as a game about modifying code during play, identifies Apex Colony as an RTS through a reviewer comment, highlights an ant ecosystem in We Follow The Fickle Path, and gives Cordyception a fungus-parasite premise. These are descriptions from the roundup and its platform comments, not independent evaluations.

- The 'indie heroes' Collection 1 cartridge brings 14 independently developed games to evercade.
- Originally Made for classic systems, this specially curated line-up showcases talented developers from around the world.

How were entries rated?
The jam used six rating categories: Overall, Gameplay, Graphics, Audio, Innovation, and Theme Interpretation. The overall standings above answer who led that category; category-specific scores can help explain a particular entry’s strengths, but the overall ranking alone does not show how it performed in each category.
Itch.io recorded 6,335 ratings across 502 submissions. GitHub’s retrospective separately described participation as almost 8,000 people and more than 500 entries; those are rounded figures from its article, not the exact results-page totals.
Rank #4
Where can you play the games or explore their code?
GitHub’s roundup links to playable builds and public source repositories for featured entries. For example, it reports that do;MIN(0) had web, Windows, macOS, and Linux builds and was made with Unity and C#; Bendyworm had web, Windows, and macOS builds and used Godot and GDScript; Hivemind had Windows, macOS, and Linux builds and used Godot and GDScript; and Doorframe OZ had web, Windows, and macOS builds and used Unity and C#. Those platform and engine details are the roundup’s descriptions, not independent compatibility tests, and availability may have changed since 2022. Check the individual game page before relying on a particular build or operating system.
