The official material explains how Follower quality and their exclusive skills support progression, but it does not establish Tartarus difficulty tiers, unlock requirements, or tier-by-tier rewards. SS14 is scheduled to begin globally on October 16 at 10:00, according to the official update log; until then, treat exact difficulty details as unconfirmed.
What is Tartarus in SS14?
Tartarus is the SS14 seasonal mechanic set in the Netherrealm. The official season announcement describes the player as the Warden, tasked with recapturing fugitives, pressuring and punishing them, and preparing for a riot. The published mechanic centers on Caged Beasts. In other words, Tartarus is presented as a seasonal encounter and progression loop, not simply a named difficulty setting.

The available official material does not yet explain every stage of that loop. It introduces the setting and its companion growth system, but does not publish a complete map of encounter steps or difficulty progression. See the official SS14 update log for the announced mechanics.

How does Tartarus progression work?
Followers are the announced growth layer
SS14 introduces Followers as a new growth system. The update log names four species: Lion Queen, Lone Wolf, Mammoth, and Witch Rat. Their quality affects two things: how many skill slots a Follower carries and the quality of its Active Skills. That makes quality relevant to companion customization, but the published information does not give acquisition rates, quality thresholds, or a guaranteed route to a particular quality.
#1 Best Overall
Practically, progression means developing a Follower setup that gives you access to the skills and slots you need. The official description does not establish which species is strongest, how species differ beyond their names, or what combination is optimal for a particular character build. Avoid treating any one Follower as a confirmed best choice until the live game or fuller official notes specify those differences.
Tartarus skills are exclusive to Followers
Tartarus skills can be used only by Followers. They can buff the player or allies, or debuff enemies. The official update log’s examples show that the system includes damage and control, support, and recovery options. Their listed values are game parameters, not independently measured performance results.
Which Follower skills should you choose?
There is no verified universal ranking in the published material. Instead, choose based on the job a skill can perform and whether its duration or condition fits your character and group. These examples from the official SS14 update log illustrate the available tactical roles:
Rank #2
- Randomization – Game level layouts are randomly created, so each adventure will always be unique.
- Easy, approachable interface – Torchlight is designed to be easy to play right from the beginning. With an intuitive interface, players can dive right in!
- Character Classes – Players will create and customize a character, choosing from 3 main Classes: The Destroyer, The Alchemist, or The Vanquisher.
- Pets – choose a pet to accompany your character. Pets can level up along with the player; they can also fight, carry items, and perform helpful tasks.
| Skill | Announced effect | Role and decision point |
|---|---|---|
| Black Hole | Creates a field for four seconds that deals damage and pulls enemies inward. While it deals damage, allies gain an additional 8% Affliction effect for four seconds. | Damage, enemy grouping, and an Affliction-related ally benefit. Consider it when pulling enemies together and amplifying that effect are useful to your setup. |
| Life Tonic | Restores allies for 3% of maximum Life per second for four seconds. If the player is at Low Life when it is cast, it additionally restores 30% of the player’s maximum Life, with a ten-second interval. | Group recovery with an extra conditional player heal. The Low Life condition and interval matter when deciding whether it fits your survival needs. |
| Lightning Storm | Tracks enemies for four seconds, periodically striking them; lightning hits inflict Numbed. | Ongoing enemy pressure with a debuff. Its tracking duration and Numbed effect distinguish it from direct recovery or grouping support. |
These are examples, not a complete skill list or a comparative ranking. The official update log does not provide enough evidence to say which skill deals the most damage overall, offers the best sustain, or works best with every build. Compare skills by role, duration, condition, and fit rather than assuming one is always superior.

The exact answer is not established in the official pre-launch information available on October 13, 2026. The update log does not publish Tartarus difficulty tiers, unlock requirements, monster scaling, or rewards for each tier. This means there is not enough confirmed information to recommend a starting tier or describe a full difficulty ladder; it does not prove that the game has no difficulty settings.
Other SS14 systems show that challenge and reward can be linked, but those examples are not a Tartarus difficulty chart. The update log lists compass effects that raise monster health while modifying drops. It also describes a Warden Cache Pactspirit that increases cache drops and adds chances for duplication or reopening. These examples indicate that some seasonal modifiers can trade greater challenge for altered rewards, but they do not establish Tartarus’s own tiers, scaling, or reward structure.

What to verify when SS14 goes live
SS14 is scheduled for a global start on October 16 at 10:00. Once the season is live, use the in-game Tartarus interface and current official notes to confirm the details that remain unpublished. Check:

- What unlocks Tartarus and whether progression has multiple stages or tiers.
- How enemy health, damage, or other challenge factors change between available settings.
- Which rewards belong to each stage or difficulty, and whether modifiers change those rewards.
- How Followers are acquired and how their quality and skill slots advance.
- Whether the live skill descriptions retain the announced durations, conditions, and effects.
Until those values are visible, base decisions on what is confirmed: Followers are the new growth system, quality affects slots and Active Skill quality, and their exclusive Tartarus skills offer several tactical roles. Do not infer unlock rules or a recommended difficulty from the separate compass and cache examples.
