The final Knight repeats the first dial. When it opens, take the Crown Key and use it on the locked gate on the north side of the Basement to reach the Prison.
Enter the seven-piece Cryptex code
- Set the first ring to Knight.
- Set the second ring to Rook. Some guides call this piece a Castle.
- Set the third ring to Bishop.
- Set the fourth ring to Queen.
- Set the fifth ring to King.
- Set the sixth ring to Pawn.
- Set the seventh ring to Knight.
The final ring is not a different piece: it repeats Knight. With all seven rings in this order, the Cryptex opens and gives Caroline the Crown Key. This sequence is corroborated by the PowerPyx puzzle guide, Destructoid’s chess puzzle guide and the GameSpew walkthrough.
How the Chess Mat clue reveals the code
The code is based on the marks on the back of the Chess Mat found in the Calefactory. Read the movement marks in order and match each pattern to the chess piece that moves that way:
- An L-shaped move identifies a Knight.
- Horizontal and vertical movement identifies a Rook.
- Diagonal movement identifies a Bishop.
- Movement in straight lines and diagonals identifies a Queen.
- One-square movement in any of those directions identifies a King.
- Forward and diagonal movement identifies a Pawn.
The seventh mark returns to the Knight, completing the seven-ring sequence. You do not need to play or win a chess match; the puzzle asks you to translate the movement symbols into piece names. If you need a reminder of the movement patterns, there is a chess-piece reference in the Library. Destructoid and GameSpew describe the mat clue and piece-movement logic.

How to get the Cryptex from the Frozen Hand
The Cryptex is inside the Frozen Hand in the Kitchen freezer. Free the hand with an assembled handsaw, then melt it at the stove:
- Combine the handsaw frame and blade to assemble the saw.
- Use the saw to free the Frozen Hand from the freezer.
- Open the stove and light its wood with Caroline’s Lighter.
- Place the Frozen Hand on the burner. Once it melts, collect the Cryptex from the inventory pickup.
The freezer-to-stove sequence is covered by Destructoid, PowerPyx and Into Indie Games.
