Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 is in development at Creative Assembly, but it has no announced release date. SEGA lists the game as TBA for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. The reveal sets up a turn-based campaign and real-time battles in Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 universe; trailer footage is explicitly from a pre-alpha build, so it is not a final feature list.
What is Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000?
It is a new strategy game combining the Total War series with Warhammer 40,000, the science-fantasy setting created by Games Workshop. SEGA identifies its group company Creative Assembly as the developer. The announcement was made in connection with The Game Awards 2025. SEGA’s announcement describes the project as a galactic-scale strategy experience, while Warhammer Community outlines its broad mix of turn-based strategy and real-time battles.
Creative Assembly says the series has sold more than 48.3 million copies, a figure for Total War as a whole—not for this unreleased game. Game Director Attila Mohacsi described the partnership with Games Workshop as more than 15 years long and said the team aims to create a definitive Warhammer 40,000 strategy experience. SEGA’s release attributes that statement to Mohacsi.
How will the game play?
The announced structure pairs deep, turn-based strategy with real-time battles. The campaign is described as a galactic sandbox involving planetary conquest, fleet upgrades, and resource management. Creative Assembly’s reveal presentation calls the footage a small glimpse of gameplay from a pre-alpha version, so details shown in the trailer may change and should not be treated as a complete account of systems or content. Creative Assembly’s game announcement provides that caveat.

Which factions are confirmed for launch?
Warhammer Community names four factions to choose from at launch. Each is intended to bring different playstyles and challenges across campaign and battle modes.
- Space Marines
- Astra Militarum
- Orks
- Aeldari
Chaos Space Marines are not included in the announced launch lineup. Creative Assembly says they are planned for some point, but has not established when they will arrive or whether they will be added after launch. The developer’s FAQ distinguishes that future plan from the four launch factions.
