Total War: WARHAMMER III is best suited to strategy fans who want to build an empire turn by turn and command large fantasy battles in real time. Its appeal depends heavily on which campaign you choose: Realm of Chaos offers a directed narrative, while Immortal Empires is the trilogy-spanning sandbox. The September 2026 Lords of the End Times release adds substantial new campaign content and changes how newcomers can access Immortal Empires, making this a more compelling entry point for players drawn to the sandbox than the game’s earlier reputation alone might suggest.
What kind of game is Total War: WARHAMMER III?
Released on February 16, 2022, Total War: WARHAMMER III is developed by Creative Assembly and Feral Interactive and published by SEGA and Feral Interactive, according to its Steam listing. It combines turn-based campaign decisions—such as expanding territory and managing a faction—with real-time battles in a fantasy setting.
That combination is the core attraction: the campaign provides the strategic context, while battles let you direct armies on the field. The experience can be focused on pursuing a defined story or left open for longer-term faction play, depending on the campaign mode.
How do Realm of Chaos and Immortal Empires differ?
| Campaign | Structure | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Realm of Chaos | A narrative campaign with a more directed objective. PC Gamer describes it as an experimental departure from the series’ customary sandbox and notes that its reception was divisive. | Players who want a campaign with a clear story and goal. |
| Immortal Empires | A broad sandbox combining campaign maps, races and factions from the trilogy. The Steam listing describes it as accessible to all WARHAMMER III owners. | Players who prefer open-ended faction play and replaying campaigns with different choices. |
The trade-off is straightforward: Realm of Chaos gives you more direction, while Immortal Empires offers more freedom to choose how a campaign unfolds. If you mainly want a tightly paced story, consider the former’s divisive reception; if you want a sprawling fantasy strategy sandbox, Immortal Empires is the stronger reason to play.

What changed with Lords of the End Times in 2026?
Games Workshop’s August 13, 2026 announcement said the Lords of the End Times DLC would launch on September 24. It adds four Legendary Lords—Thanquol, Boris Todbringer, the Glottkin and Nagash—along with eight Legendary Heroes, five Lords and Heroes, 23 battle units, 12 Regiments of Renown, and new mechanics, features and objectives. These are the contents listed in that announcement.
The release is accompanied by separate free content: a Neferata Legendary Lord, a Vampire Counts rework and endgame challenges, also described in the Warhammer Community announcement. The paid DLC and the free update should not be conflated when deciding what content you want.

- Empire Total War Complete Edition
GamesRadar+ Features Editor Andy Brown wrote that, after a reported 1,007 hours with the game, the updated Immortal Empires experience was the most exciting it had been for him. That is a useful recent personal perspective on the update, not a measure of broad player consensus or a guarantee that every player will feel the same.
Can newcomers play Immortal Empires without earlier games?
Yes. The current access rules distinguish between entering the campaign and owning every faction. Steam says all WARHAMMER III owners can access Immortal Empires. Separately, the Warhammer Community announcement says buying an individual Lords of the End Times character or the full bundle grants Immortal Empires access without requiring an earlier Total War: WARHAMMER game.

Access to the mode does not automatically unlock every faction in the trilogy: some races still require other trilogy games or DLC. Check the current Steam listing for the specific content you want, since entitlements and DLC catalogs can change.

The overall and recent ratings tell different parts of the story: the long-run response is more mixed than the recent snapshot. The latter may reflect how players are responding to current content, but the figures alone cannot establish why sentiment differs. PC Gamer also notes that Realm of Chaos was divisive, so a player’s preferred campaign structure matters when interpreting general praise or criticism.

For an established strategy fan seeking a large fantasy sandbox, the case is strong: Immortal Empires brings together the trilogy’s campaign world, and Lords of the End Times adds four Legendary Lords and further campaign content. The updated entry rules also make Immortal Empires accessible without buying an earlier trilogy game, though specific factions may still require additional purchases.

For someone chiefly seeking a tightly paced story, the recommendation is less clear. Realm of Chaos is the directed option, but its reception has been divisive. The best fit is a player who enjoys both managing a faction over a long campaign and taking command in real-time battles—and who is comfortable choosing between a focused narrative and an open-ended sandbox.
