What travel insurance may cover after a flight delay
A trip-delay benefit may reimburse reasonable, eligible expenses you incur while waiting, such as meals, accommodation and transportation, up to the policy’s limit. Some policies may also cover certain unused prepaid trip expenses caused by a covered delay, after subtracting any refund. If the delay makes you miss a cruise or tour departure, some terms may cover transportation to rejoin it or reach your destination. These are examples described by Allianz Partners, not standard benefits guaranteed by every policy (Allianz Partners’ delay coverage guidance).
Check the policy wording and schedule: the label “trip delay” does not tell you by itself what costs qualify, whether a payment is reimbursement or a fixed benefit, or how much the insurer will pay. A delay can be real and costly yet still fall outside the policy’s terms.
When a delay qualifies for a claim
Meet the policy’s waiting period
Policies set their own minimum delay duration. Allianz gives three or more consecutive hours as an example definition, while noting that the required time varies by plan (Allianz Partners). Travel Guard describes its trip-delay benefit as applying to delays of 24 or more hours due to a covered reason (Travel Guard’s claim guidance). These different thresholds are examples, not a universal rule. Read the threshold in your own contract and determine how it counts the delay.

The cause must be covered, too
Meeting the time threshold may not be enough: the policy must also cover the reason for the delay. Allianz lists examples such as a travel-carrier delay and certain strikes, but says restrictions can apply—for example, a strike that was already threatened or announced before the policy was purchased. The covered reasons and exclusions in your plan control (Allianz Partners’ explanation of covered delay reasons).
Do not assume that every weather disruption, strike, airline delay or missed connection qualifies. Check the exact wording, including any purchase-date conditions and requirements to notify the insurer or carrier.

Insurance benefits and airline rights are different
An insurer decides a claim under your policy. An airline’s duties or passenger compensation are governed separately by the rules that apply to the itinerary. You may be able to pursue both, but an airline voucher or refund may affect the amount of an insurance reimbursement; disclose settlements as your insurer requires.
Flights within UK261’s scope
The UK Civil Aviation Authority says passengers may be entitled to care while waiting, compensation if they reach their destination airport more than three hours late, and a refund instead of continuing if the delay exceeds five hours. Eligibility depends on the applicable rules and circumstances; the thresholds do not make every delayed passenger eligible for compensation (UK Civil Aviation Authority: flight delays).

UK government guidance says care thresholds depend on flight distance. Care can include meals and refreshments and, when necessary, overnight accommodation and transport. If the airline cannot arrange care, reasonable self-arranged expenses may be claimed; keep receipts and ask the airline what it considers reasonable. Luxury hotels and alcohol are unlikely to qualify (GOV.UK: flight delays and your rights).
Journeys covered by EU passenger-rights rules
EU rules apply to journeys within their defined scope, not to every flight that happens to be delayed. The European Commission’s guidance explains passenger rights, while the EU regulation sets out remedies including reimbursement or rerouting in specified circumstances. Check the itinerary, operating carrier and nature of the disruption before relying on a particular remedy (European Commission passenger-rights guidance; Regulation (EC) No 261/2004).

- Itinerary and booking details: Keep the route, flight information and scheduled times (Travel Guard’s claim guidance).
- Proof of the disruption: Save airline notices, messages and itinerary changes. Ask the carrier for written confirmation of the delay’s cause and duration (Allianz Partners; Travel Guard).
- Itemised receipts and proof of payment: Record what you bought and how much you paid. The CAA advises: “You should ask for an itemised receipt or invoice to show what you purchased, and how much you spent” (CAA flight-delay guidance). Keep receipts even if you also seek care costs from the airline.
- Refunds, vouchers and other settlements: Record what you received or expect from the airline or another party. Travel Guard asks claimants to provide documentation of settlements, refunds or credits received or expected (Travel Guard’s claim guidance).
- Claim instructions for your plan: Use the insurer’s current claim channel, form and document checklist. There is no universal claim deadline established by these examples; check your policy and insurer instructions rather than relying on a general deadline.
Some Allianz plans describe a fixed-payment option that does not require receipts, but that feature applies only where the particular plan offers it. Check the plan’s proof requirements before assuming you can claim without receipts (Allianz Partners).

How to compare trip-delay coverage
Use the policy schedule and full wording, not just a summary label, to compare the terms that determine whether a delay is claimable and what the benefit is worth.
- Trigger: Minimum continuous delay and how the plan measures it.
- Covered causes and exclusions: Which disruptions count, and whether advance notice, purchase timing or other conditions limit coverage.
- Payment method and limits: Reimbursement versus a fixed amount, eligible expense categories, and any per-person, per-day or overall cap.
- Trip-specific losses: Whether certain prepaid costs, missed connections, or transport to rejoin a cruise or tour are covered, and how refunds are deducted.
- Claim requirements: Required notices, evidence, submission channel and deadline.
- Airline remedies: Separately check passenger rights for the route and circumstances; these are not part of the insurance benefit.
The insurer examples above show why a generic promise of “delay coverage” is not enough: waiting periods and benefit terms vary by product. The policy in force for your trip is the basis for an individual claim.
