“The program can’t start because tsd32.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.” If tsd32.dll is missing, Windows is usually trying to start an old game or multimedia application that included the DSP Group TrueSpeech codec.

Which fix applies to you

Use the first matching situation:

  • The error appears when opening one old game or application: repair or reinstall that program first.
  • The program was installed through Steam or another launcher: run its file-verification feature, then repair or reinstall it if necessary.
  • Windows Security recently detected or quarantined a file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
  • The error occurs while opening an old audio file: the application may need both tsd32.dll and tssoft32.acm.
  • The message says “The specified module could not be found”: tsd32.dll may exist, but another dependency may be missing.
  • Several unrelated Windows programs report missing system files: check Windows component health with DISM and SFC.
  • The program is very old and still fails after reinstalling: use compatibility settings or run it in an appropriate legacy Windows environment.

Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL. The safest source is the original application installer, official patch, or official launcher.

What tsd32.dll is

tsd32.dll is the DSP Group TrueSpeech Audio Encoder & Decoder, a legacy 32-bit Win32 audio codec. Older Windows multimedia software used it through the Audio Compression Manager, or ACM. Some applications also expect the related tssoft32.acm codec component.

This is not:

  • A Visual C++ runtime
  • A DirectX runtime
  • A .NET component
  • A graphics or sound-card driver
  • A normal modern Windows system dependency

TrueSpeech was supported in older Windows environments, including Windows XP-era installations. It is not a codec that current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installations normally provide. Microsoft’s current codec guidance does not identify TrueSpeech as a standard modern Windows codec.

The file may have been bundled with an old application or game. Historical installation media for games including RollerCoaster Tycoon: Deluxe and Voodoo Kid has included tsd32.dll, but that does not prove that every installation of either game requires it.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application

This is the most likely solution because tsd32.dll normally belongs to the old program that installed it, not to a current Windows runtime package.

If the program has a repair option

  1. Close the affected program.
  2. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  5. Find the affected game or application.
  6. Select the ** three-dot menu** on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
  7. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  8. Select Repair.
  9. Start the program again.

If it opens without the error, Windows restored the application’s files. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the application entry and choose Uninstall. Restart Windows, then reinstall the program from its original disc, the developer’s official installer, or the official launcher.

Do not copy a DLL from another computer unless you have verified that it came from the same application version and trusted installation media. A copied file can have the wrong architecture or depend on other files that are still absent.

If the program came from Steam

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Right-click the affected game.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Select Installed Files.
  6. Select Verify integrity of game files.
  7. Wait for the process to finish.
  8. Start the game again.

The launcher may restore tsd32.dll and any companion codec files that belong to the game. If verification reports no problem but the error remains, uninstall and reinstall the game, then apply any official patch available for that title.

Run the game once after installation. If it still fails, right-click its executable, select Properties, open Compatibility, and test the compatibility troubleshooter or a suitable older Windows compatibility mode. Compatibility settings cannot create a missing codec, so use them only after restoring the application files.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an old codec because legacy files have limited modern reputation data. A filename alone does not establish that a file is safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review entries related to the affected game, application, or tsd32.dll.
  5. Expand an entry to view its path and detection details.

Restore the file only when all of the following are true:

  • It came from the legitimate application installer or original media.
  • The path belongs to the affected application.
  • You trust the application source.
  • A current security scan does not identify the installer as malicious.

If you are unsure, do not restore it. Remove the application, download or obtain a clean installer from the developer or official launcher, and scan that installer before running it.

After restoring a trusted file, start the application. If Windows Security immediately quarantines it again, stop using that copy and investigate the installer rather than repeatedly restoring the file.

Fix 3: Restore the complete codec set

Some programs need tsd32.dll and tssoft32.acm together. Restoring only the DLL may leave the Audio Compression Manager unable to open or decode the audio stream.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the affected application’s installation folder and any bundled folders named Audio, Codec, or DirectXDRIVERS. Do not treat the presence of a file in one of these folders as permission to download a replacement from a random DLL site.

The correct procedure is:

  1. Uninstall the affected application.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Reinstall it from its original installer or official launcher.
  4. Apply the application’s official patch, if one exists.
  5. Check whether both codec components are restored by that installation.
  6. Test the same operation that originally produced the error.

If the error appears only when opening one old audio file, the file may use TrueSpeech compression that the current application no longer supports. Try opening it with the original software that created it, after restoring that software from trusted installation media. A general media-player reinstall will not necessarily add this obsolete codec.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

tsd32.dll is a 32-bit library. A 32-bit application can often use a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows through WOW64. A 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit DLL.

Do not solve this by moving the file between system folders:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system components.
  • SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components.

The names are counterintuitive, and manual copying can break application isolation or cause new errors. Keep the codec with the application that installed it unless that software’s documentation explicitly requires another location.

To check the application:

  1. Right-click the application’s executable or shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Details tab, if available, to identify the program.
  4. Check the developer’s compatibility information for the supported Windows version and architecture.

An error stating that tsd32.dll is “not designed to run on Windows” can indicate a corrupted file, a tampered file, or an architecture mismatch. Reinstall the application rather than replacing the file manually.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged

SFC and DISM are useful when protected Windows files are corrupted. They do not install an obsolete third-party codec or reconstruct a private copy stored inside an application folder.

Open Command Prompt as administrator:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to complete, then run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows after both commands finish and test the affected application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A successful result means DISM repaired the Windows component store or SFC verified or repaired protected system files. It does not necessarily mean tsd32.dll was restored.

If SFC reports that it could not repair some files:

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Install pending Windows updates through Settings → Windows Update.
  3. Restart again.
  4. Run the DISM and SFC commands once more.
  5. Review %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log if you need the repair details.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through repair results and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed; its free scan shows detected issues, while repair features require the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the affected game or application remains the definitive fix when that program owns the codec.

Do not use Windows Features to look for TrueSpeech. The Media Features options can restore supported Windows media components, but they are not a verified current installer for tsd32.dll.

Fix 6: Update drivers only for broader audio problems

A driver update is not a normal fix for a missing TrueSpeech codec. Update drivers only when you also have system-wide sound failures, a missing audio device, or a Device Manager error.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Right-click the affected audio device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

For a more reliable driver source, use the computer or audio-device manufacturer’s official support page. Avoid driver packages that do not clearly identify the hardware.

Outbyte Driver Updater can save time when you are manually checking several devices and trying to determine which driver is stale; its free scan identifies detected driver issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional. A driver update will not replace the application-specific TrueSpeech codec.

Why regsvr32 usually does not apply

Do not use this as a general repair command:

regsvr32 tsd32.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. tsd32.dll is an ACM codec library, not normally a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. The command may return an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ACM registration is normally handled by the application or codec installer. If reinstalling the application does not register its audio component correctly, use the installer’s repair function or contact the application vendor rather than forcing regsvr32.

Avoid random DLL downloads

Random DLL download sites can provide:

  • The wrong file version
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • A damaged or modified file
  • A file that does not include tssoft32.acm
  • Malware using a familiar filename

They also commonly place the file in a system folder without repairing the application that needs it. There is no verified current official Microsoft redistributable specifically for tsd32.dll.

Use the original application media, the developer’s official installer, or the official launcher’s repair and verification features. If a legacy codec package is required, obtain it only from a source you can independently trust and verify.

If the error still appears

If reinstalling the application does not help:

  1. Confirm which executable displays the error.
  2. Check whether the error happens at launch or only with one audio file.
  3. Confirm that the application installer restored all of its audio and codec files.
  4. Check Windows Security Protection history.
  5. Review Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application for a related application error.
  6. Check whether the application is 32-bit and whether its Windows version is supported.
  7. Test the program with compatibility settings.
  8. Use System Restore only if the failure began after a recent system change.
  9. Consider running the application inside a suitable legacy Windows virtual machine.

If the message names tsd32.dll but the file is present, “The specified module could not be found” may refer to a dependency of that DLL. In that case, reinstall the complete application and inspect its compatibility requirements instead of replacing the named file.

FAQ

Is tsd32.dll a Windows 10 or Windows 11 file?

Not normally. It is a legacy 32-bit DSP Group TrueSpeech codec associated with older Windows multimedia software. A current Windows installation should not be expected to provide it.

Should I put tsd32.dll in System32?

No, not by default. Restore it through the application that requires it. Manual system-folder copying can create architecture and DLL-search problems.

Do I need both tsd32.dll and tssoft32.acm?

Possibly. Some applications expect both components. Reinstalling the original application is the safest way to restore the correct pair.

Will DirectX or Visual C++ reinstallations fix it?

Usually not. tsd32.dll is a TrueSpeech ACM codec, not a DirectX or Visual C++ runtime file. Install those runtimes only when the affected application explicitly requires them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can SFC restore the file?

Only if the file is part of the protected Windows image being repaired. SFC will not reliably restore a private codec bundled with an old game or application.

Should I register the file with regsvr32?

Generally no. ACM codec installation is not normally performed with regsvr32, and the command may report that the registration entry point is missing.
