That gives players a new official answer to calls for more Classic-era exploration, but the available evidence does not show that Turtle WoW’s lawsuit caused Blizzard to create it. The two developments reflect overlapping interests—not a proven cause-and-effect relationship.
What happened to Turtle WoW?
Turtle WoW was a fan-operated, modified take on a 2006-era World of Warcraft experience. Contemporaneous reporting described added playable races, zones, and instances. Blizzard sued Turtle WoW and associated defendants in federal court in California in 2025.
Blizzard’s complaint made allegations; those allegations should not be treated as findings of fact simply because the case proceeded. In February 2026, the public docket recorded the denial of Josiah Zimmer’s motion to dismiss. Stipulated judgments and permanent injunctions followed for named defendants. The injunction cited against Zimmer bars specified activities involving Blizzard private or emulated servers, modified clients, remastered clients, and transfers of Turtle WoW materials. Its terms apply to the parties and activities it names; that order alone does not establish every allegation as adjudicated fact or show that every defendant faced identical terms.
When did Turtle WoW shut down?
In an April 2026 shutdown announcement, Turtle WoW said its servers would go offline at midnight on May 15, ending a project that had been online for almost eight years. That server shutdown has taken effect. The team separately scheduled the closure of its website, forums, and social media for October 16, 2026; as of October 8, that later date is still ahead. The announcement also said donations were disabled.

What is World of Warcraft: Forever?
On September 12, 2026, Blizzard announced World of Warcraft: Forever as an ongoing version of original Azeroth, with a launch date of November 4, 2026. Blizzard described plans for new places and stories, future raids and dungeons, PvP updates, world content, and additional quests along the level 1–60 journey. Those are announced plans, not a record of content already released.
Blizzard said the project grew from lessons learned through WoW Classic and Season of Discovery, as well as a community that continued to imagine what original Azeroth could become. The company put it this way: “World of Warcraft: Forever grew from that shared hope, from what we learned with WoW Classic and Season of Discovery, and from a community that has never stopped dreaming about what else original Azeroth could become.”

Does Turtle WoW’s legal case explain Blizzard’s announcement?
It may be tempting to connect the events: Turtle WoW shut down after a legal fight, and Blizzard then announced an official project focused on extending the original-Azeroth experience. But timing does not establish that the lawsuit triggered Forever. Blizzard’s announcement credits lessons from Classic and Season of Discovery and community interest; it does not say the project was a response to Turtle WoW or its case. PC Gamer had reported on Blizzard “teasing its own take” on Classic Plus before Turtle WoW’s shutdown, which is useful historical context, not evidence of causation.
The more supportable interpretation is that the events converge around a continuing player interest in revisiting original Azeroth while discovering more there. Blizzard’s announcement makes that direction official, but it does not promise to reproduce Turtle WoW’s content or adopt the fan team’s licensing proposal.

How does Blizzard’s official direction compare with Turtle WoW?
| Question | Turtle WoW | World of Warcraft: Forever |
|---|---|---|
| Who operates it? | A fan-operated project; reporting described its modified experience. | Blizzard’s official project, announced by the company on September 12, 2026. |
| What is the experience? | A modified 2006-era WoW experience, reported to include added playable races, zones, and instances. | An ongoing version of original Azeroth, with new places, stories, and further content planned. |
| What is its status? | Servers went offline at midnight on May 15, 2026, according to the project’s April shutdown announcement. | Blizzard announced a November 4, 2026 launch date. |
| Is there a documented licensing relationship? | The team asked Blizzard for a licensing framework for fan servers and mods in an October 2025 open letter. The cited sources do not show that Blizzard accepted the request. | No licensing relationship with Turtle WoW is established in Blizzard’s announcement. |
The comparison is about who operates each project, what each offers, and what is known about their status—not a claim that the experiences are interchangeable. Turtle WoW’s team argued in its open letter that fan-created work could form part of a game’s legacy, writing: “We hope that Blizzard embraces fan-driven content as its own legacy, rather than alienate this passionate community.” That documents the team’s position, not the views of all WoW players or a Blizzard commitment.

Blizzard’s official Classic hub says an active subscription or game time provides access to multiple official Classic versions, including Season of Discovery. That is a current official access route for those versions; it does not mean Turtle WoW content is included, or establish that every planned Forever feature is available before its announced launch.
