Naughty Dog cancelled its separate project, The Last of Us Online, in December 2023. In 2026, a fan-made PC mod by Speclizer reportedly reached 4v4 matches, but its creator later said a letter on Sony Interactive Entertainment’s behalf requested that it not be released. Reports said the mod would not launch.
Why did The Last of Us Part II ship without Factions?
Naughty Dog described its planned multiplayer game as something larger than a mode bundled with Part II. In June 2022, the studio said it was making a standalone experience intended to welcome new players while challenging established fans. The announcement did not promise that multiplayer would be included in Part II. Naughty Dog’s 2022 announcement also noted that the studio had sold more than 10 million copies of The Last of Us globally by spring 2022; that is a historical figure, not a current sales total.

The standalone project, later known as The Last of Us Online, had been in pre-production since the studio was working on Part II. Naughty Dog announced in December 2023 that development had stopped. The studio said releasing and supporting the game would require devoting all studio resources to post-launch content for years, with a serious impact on future single-player games. That is Naughty Dog’s stated rationale, not an independently verified accounting of its staffing or budgets. Read Naughty Dog’s cancellation statement.
What happened to the fan-made Part II multiplayer mod?
Speclizer’s project was a separate community effort for the PC version of Part II, not an official revival of The Last of Us Online. PC Gamer reported on July 29, 2026, that work had been underway since the start of that year and that the mod had advanced from 1v1 limits to 4v4 matches. The report also described a functioning leaderboard, maps, a menu, gear loadouts and matchmaking. These were features of the reported fan project, not features released or endorsed by Naughty Dog. The mod was planned for September 2026. In September, GamesRadar and Kotaku reported Speclizer’s statement that a letter on Sony Interactive Entertainment’s behalf had requested that the mod not be released. Kotaku reproduced the creator’s words: “Unfortunately I recently received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting for the mod not to be released.” The reports said the project would not launch. The letter itself and its complete terms or legal basis were not made public in those reports, so this should not be described as a court order or lawsuit. Kotaku’s report and GamesRadar’s report.

Can you play The Last of Us Part II multiplayer on PC?
No official Part II multiplayer release is established by the sources cited here, and the reported fan mod is not coming out. Buying or playing the PC version of Part II does not provide access to that project. The Last of Us Part II Remastered is an official PS5 edition, but it is not the PC mod. Naughty Dog’s support site documents patches for the PS5 remaster; those updates do not turn it into a release of the cancelled multiplayer projects. Is any older Factions multiplayer still playable?
Kotaku reported in September 2026 that the original Factions multiplayer remained playable in the PS4 remaster at that time, while The Last of Us Part I remake did not include it. Legacy online availability can change, so check the game and platform’s current service status before buying or returning to it. This older Factions experience is distinct from both The Last of Us Online and the fan-made Part II mod. Kotaku’s September 2026 report.
