Ubisoft has cancelled Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. The company said on January 30, 2026, that it stopped development because the project had not reached the quality level it wanted and would require more time and investment than Ubisoft could responsibly commit. The cancellation was part of a broader portfolio reset announced nine days earlier.
Why was the Prince of Persia remake cancelled?
Ubisoft’s January 30 statement gave the project-level reason. The Prince of Persia Team said: “While the project had real potential, we weren’t able to reach the level of quality you deserve, and continuing would have required more time and investment than we could responsibly commit.” Ubisoft said it did not want to release a game that fell short of what The Sands of Time represents. That is Ubisoft’s explanation, not an independent assessment of the game’s quality or the project’s finances. The company’s statement establishes the rationale it gave for stopping development; it does not provide outside verification of those judgments.
How was the cancellation connected to Ubisoft’s reorganization?
On January 21, 2026, Ubisoft announced a “major organizational, operational and portfolio reset.” The company said its review of the content pipeline during December and January led it to discontinue six games and give seven others additional development time. The remake was the only one of the six named in the release.

The remake’s cancellation therefore had two connected dimensions: Ubisoft cited the quality threshold and further time and investment required for this project, while the January reset placed the decision within a broader effort to prioritize its portfolio. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot described the wider changes as necessary to build “a more focused, efficient and sustainable organization over the long term.” Ubisoft’s January 21 reset announcement
What did Ubisoft cancel in the 2026 reset?
Ubisoft’s January 21 release counted six discontinued games, but identified only the remake and broad categories for the other five. It did not publish the names of the unannounced projects.

What is Ubisoft’s five-Creative-House model?
As part of its reset, Ubisoft said it would organize its operations around five Creative Houses, with the model due to begin operating in early April 2026. The company placed Prince of Persia in Creative House 4, which it described as dedicated to immersive fantasy worlds and narrative-driven universes.

That placement describes Ubisoft’s portfolio organization; it is not an announcement that a new Prince of Persia game is in development. The company’s January release also set out cost-reduction objectives and financial estimates. These are Ubisoft targets and forecasts, not audited results:
- Ubisoft said it expected at least €100 million in fixed-cost savings versus FY2024–25 by March 2026.
- It set an additional €200 million fixed-cost reduction objective over the following two years.
- It described an objective of around €500 million in total fixed-cost reductions since FY2022–23, with fixed costs estimated at approximately €1.25 billion run-rate by March 2028, compared with €1.75 billion in FY2022–23.
- For FY2025–26, Ubisoft estimated net bookings of approximately €1.5 billion, non-IFRS EBIT of around −€1 billion, and free cash flow between −€400 million and −€500 million.
Ubisoft said its forward-looking estimates were subject to risks and uncertainties and could vary materially from actual published results. They describe the company’s expectations at the time of its January 21 announcement, not realized outcomes.

Is The Sands of Time remake still coming out?
No. Ubisoft said development had stopped. Its statements do not announce a replacement remake, a new release date, or another game that would take its place.
Is Ubisoft done with Prince of Persia?
Ubisoft said the cancellation did not mean it was leaving the franchise. In its January 30 statement, the Prince of Persia Team said: “Prince of Persia as a universe and a legacy continues to matter deeply to us, and this decision does not mean we’re stepping away from the franchise.” The statement expresses Ubisoft’s position on the series’ future, but does not name a specific next game or commit to a release plan.
