The company said a restructure could affect approximately 55 roles across Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft Stockholm in Malmö and Stockholm; it did not say how many roles belonged to either studio or confirm a final departure count.
What Ubisoft announced
Ubisoft informed employees at its two Swedish studios—Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft Stockholm—of a proposed organizational restructure on January 13, 2026. The company said it might affect approximately 55 roles across Malmö and Stockholm, according to Game Informer’s report quoting Ubisoft’s statement supplied to IGN.
The figure applies to the two studios together. Ubisoft did not publish a split by studio, city, department, or job function, so it is not accurate to describe all 55 as Massive Entertainment employees.
Were 55 people laid off?
That is not established by the available announcement. Ubisoft described the changes as a proposed restructure that “may affect approximately 55 roles.” The statement does not confirm how many proposed role reductions were ultimately implemented or how many people left.

Ubisoft’s January 21 portfolio-reset announcement later referred to restructuring at Massive among changes elsewhere in the company, but it does not supply a final count for the Swedish proposal. The announcement is available from Ubisoft’s portfolio-reset release.
Which studios and locations were named?
The proposal covered Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft Stockholm, with roles potentially affected in Malmö and Stockholm. Ubisoft did not say how the roles were divided between the studios or locations. Massive’s official studio history describes it as a Ubisoft studio based in Sweden, with studios in Malmö and Stockholm.

Why did Ubisoft say it was restructuring?
Ubisoft said the proposal followed the completion of its fall 2025 Voluntary Leave Program, a finalized long-term roadmap, and a completed staffing and appointment process. It characterized the changes as forward-looking and structural, not related to individual performance, recent deliveries, or team quality. Those are Ubisoft’s stated rationale and characterization.
The voluntary program had been introduced at Ubisoft’s Nordic studios in October 2025. In its FY2025–26 half-year earnings release, Ubisoft reported 17,097 employees company-wide at the end of September 2025, around 1,500 fewer than 12 months earlier. That is group-wide context, not a headcount for Massive or either affected studio, and it cannot be used to calculate the proposal’s share of Massive’s workforce.

Did Ubisoft say The Division or other work would change?
Ubisoft said the studios’ long-term direction would remain unchanged. It identified their role as the global home and lead for The Division franchise, work on an unannounced technology project with a refined team setup, and a central role in Snowdrop and Ubisoft Connect. The announcement does not specify whether particular projects, teams, or schedules would change as a result of the proposed restructure.
Massive’s own history also lists Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars Outlaws among its work. The company’s current jobs page showed openings in Malmö and Stockholm when accessed, including roles on The Division and unannounced projects. Vacancies are a changing snapshot; they do not establish the final outcome or overall employment effect of the proposal.

What changed in Massive’s organization later in 2026?
In a September 30, 2026 update, Ubisoft described development teams in Montréal, Paris, Sweden, and Toronto as operating under a shared Massive Entertainment identity. It said the teams work on The Division, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, and new original IP, including March of Giants, while Ubisoft remains publisher and distributor for games under the brand. See Ubisoft’s update on Massive Entertainment.
This later brand description is a separate organizational development. It does not establish whether, or to what extent, the January proposal affecting the two Swedish studios was completed.
