Ubisoft said optional monetization can make premium games more fun by letting players customize avatars or progress faster. That was the company’s position in its 2024–25 Universal Registration Document—not evidence that players generally agree. In July 2026, coverage reported that Ubisoft left the specific “more fun” claim out of its next annual report; the reason is unclear.
What Ubisoft said about microtransactions
Ubisoft’s Universal Registration Document 2024–25, in its “Group business model and strategy” section, paired two points: players should be able to enjoy premium games fully without spending more, and optional monetization could make the experience more fun.
“At Ubisoft, the golden rule when developing premium games is to allow players to enjoy the game in full without having to spend more. Our monetization offer within premium games makes the player experience more fun by allowing them to personalize their avatars or progress more quickly, however this is always optional.”
— Ubisoft, Universal Registration Document 2024–25

The qualification matters. Ubisoft described an optional offer, not a requirement to buy add-ons, and named two possible benefits: cosmetic personalization and faster progression. Its report states the company’s view; it is not an independent survey of players.
Can those purchases actually make a game more enjoyable?
Avatar personalization
Cosmetics can add enjoyment for someone who values self-expression or wants a character to look distinctive. But that is a player-specific benefit, not proof that the game itself becomes more enjoyable for everyone. A cosmetic purchase may have little value to someone who is indifferent to appearance.

Faster progression
Paying to progress more quickly can be convenient for a player short on time, but it also raises a different question: does the game remain satisfying at its ordinary pace? If an optional purchase saves time without making the unpaid experience feel needlessly slow, it may be welcome. If the game’s pacing feels designed to push players toward spending, “optional” describes the purchase mechanics but does not settle whether the design feels fair.
Those are ways to assess Ubisoft’s examples, not findings established by the company’s report. The cited sources provide no published statistic or study showing that microtransactions increase player enjoyment or that players generally agree with Ubisoft.

Ubisoft later dropped the specific “more fun” line
In July 2026, Kotaku reported that Ubisoft’s subsequent annual report omitted the sentence saying monetization makes the experience “more fun,” while retaining other microtransaction language. Game World Observer likewise reported the omission and said the reason was unclear. The later document covers fiscal year April 1, 2025, through March 31, 2026.
The reported edit does not, by itself, establish why Ubisoft removed the sentence or show that the company formally retracted its broader monetization policy. The available coverage does not give a reason, so it would be misleading to present backlash or a change in belief as fact.

So, do you agree?
It depends on what the purchase does for the individual player and how the game feels without it. Personalization can be enjoyable when players want that choice; faster progression can be useful when it saves time. Neither benefit proves that microtransactions improve games as a general rule. A fair judgment also asks whether the full premium game is satisfying without extra spending—a standard Ubisoft itself set out in the same statement.
