XDefiant is no longer playable: Ubisoft ended the free-to-play shooter’s service on June 3, 2025, after announcing its discontinuation six months earlier. After the shutdown, executive producer Mark Rubin said he had decided to leave the games industry and spend more time with his family.
Why did XDefiant shut down?
Ubisoft announced on December 3, 2024, that it would discontinue development because XDefiant had not attracted and retained enough players over the long term to compete in the free-to-play shooter market. The company said the game was too far from the results it needed to justify further significant investment. Ubisoft’s announcement

Rubin’s later comments describe problems he believed contributed to the outcome, rather than replacing Ubisoft’s stated business rationale. In a post-shutdown interview, he pointed to limited marketing after launch, technical debt and netcode difficulties, and a lack of resources for content. Those are Rubin’s assessments; they are not an independently established account of why the game failed. GameSpot also noted that Ubisoft did promote the title, so Rubin’s marketing criticism should not be read as proof that it received no promotion. GameSpot’s report on Rubin’s comments
When did XDefiant’s servers shut down?
Ubisoft stopped new downloads, player registrations, and purchases on December 3, 2024, the day it announced the discontinuation. It said the already-installed game would remain online through June 3, 2025, and that Season 3 would still launch. Ubisoft’s announcement

The service cutoff passed, and GameSpot reported on June 4, 2025, that the servers were offline, quoting the official XDefiant account’s message: “The servers are now closed.” GameSpot’s shutdown report
Is XDefiant still playable or available to buy?
No. XDefiant’s servers are offline, so the game cannot be played as a live service. Ubisoft ended new downloads and purchases on December 3, 2024; there is no current playable or purchasable version established by the available reporting.
Why is Mark Rubin leaving the games industry?
In a statement reported on June 5, 2025, Rubin said he had decided to leave the industry and spend more time with his family. He added that people would not be hearing about him making another game. This reflects Rubin’s stated intention at that time, not a verified claim about his permanent status. VGC’s report on Rubin’s statement
Rubin also said he still cared deeply about shooters and hoped another developer would continue the approach he had tried to champion: games that respect players and listen to their feedback. VGC’s report on Rubin’s statement

How do Ubisoft’s and Rubin’s explanations differ?
| Who and when | What the statement establishes |
|---|---|
| Ubisoft, December 3, 2024 | The company said the game had not attracted and retained enough players long term to meet its goals or justify further significant investment. Ubisoft’s announcement |
| Mark Rubin, after the shutdown | Rubin offered his account of operational challenges, including marketing, technical debt, netcode, and content resources. These are his views, not Ubisoft’s formal shutdown rationale. GameSpot’s report on Rubin’s comments |
Rubin’s account of XDefiant’s audience also needs context. In Ubisoft’s December 2024 community message, he said the game had more than 15 million players and had become Ubisoft’s fastest game to surpass 5 million users. Those are Rubin’s published figures, not audited active-player, concurrent-player, or retention measurements. A large cumulative audience does not establish that enough players stayed over time to meet Ubisoft’s business goals. Ubisoft’s community message
Rubin described the game’s design ambition as removing skill-based matchmaking while reviving an “old-school” arcade shooter feel. That was an intended direction, not a guarantee that every player experienced the game the same way. In his shutdown message, he wrote, “Free-to-play, in particular, is a long journey,” and added, “But unfortunately, the journey became too much to sensibly continue.” Ubisoft’s community message
What happened to the XDefiant developers?
Ubisoft said almost half of the worldwide XDefiant team would move into other roles within the company. It also announced the closure of its San Francisco and Osaka production studios and a ramp-down of the Sydney production site. Ubisoft named 143 departures in San Francisco and said 134 people were likely to depart in Osaka and Sydney. The 134 figure was a projection in the company’s December 2024 announcement, not a confirmed final total. Ubisoft’s announcement
