If UBOAT crashes on your Steam Deck, start with SteamOS updates and a restart, then work through apps, game files, Proton, and graphics settings one change at a time. These are troubleshooting steps, not seven guaranteed cures: Valve’s guidance covers general Steam Deck instability, while UBOAT-specific reports are anecdotal and tied to particular game and Proton versions.
1. Update SteamOS and restart the Deck
Install any available SteamOS updates, then restart before changing game settings or files. Valve lists updates and a restart among its first steps for application instability. This gives you a clean baseline for checking whether UBOAT still crashes.
Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guide
2. Close third-party Desktop Mode apps
If you installed third-party apps or overlays through Desktop Mode, exit or disable them temporarily and retest UBOAT. Valve recommends disabling third-party Desktop Mode apps when troubleshooting instability. That does not establish that any particular overlay is responsible for your crash; it is a way to rule out potential interference.
3. Check for a game update and verify UBOAT’s files
Check Steam for a UBOAT update. If the game is already current, use Steam’s installed-file verification option for the game before trying more disruptive changes. The pinned UBOAT Proton community thread also advises checking game files, but that is community guidance rather than an official diagnosis of Steam Deck crashes.

Valve’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking for updates; UBOAT-specific file-check advice appears in the UBOAT Proton support thread.
4. Test another Proton version
For a Steam app with stability problems, Valve recommends trying the latest Proton version. Proton selection is per game: in Steam’s Library, open UBOAT > Properties > Compatibility, enable the option to force a compatibility tool, and select a Proton version. Retest the same action that caused the crash.

UBOAT community reports show why no one version should be treated as a universal fix. In an older report, Proton Experimental helped some freezes; a May 2023 edit from another poster said Experimental caused crashes for them and Proton 8.0-2 worked instead. Those reports describe different setups and dates, not a current recommendation to install either version. Start with Valve’s latest-version guidance, then compare another available version if the symptom persists.
When comparing, record the game build and date, Proton version, where the crash occurs, and whether switching changed the symptom. The UBOAT thread was created in 2020 and last edited September 6, 2025; its version-specific advice is community history, not a current official support commitment.

5. Lower graphics settings, especially for save-load crashes
If UBOAT crashes while loading a save, try lowering graphics settings, beginning with texture resolution. One Steam Deck player reported that reducing texture resolution let a save load after what they suspected was an out-of-memory crash. It is a single user’s report, not proof that memory is the cause of other crashes or that this change will fix them.
Change one setting at a time and repeat the same save-load or gameplay action. That makes it easier to tell whether a particular adjustment changed the result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

6. Treat shader and cache cleanup as a cautious, later option
If the crash started after an update and the earlier steps did not help, the UBOAT Proton thread describes historical community directions for refreshing Vulkan shader downloads and clearing UBOAT Cache/Data Sheets folders. Those directions are older and community-authored; clearing game data can have consequences, and the evidence does not show that cleanup fixes every crash.

Steam Deck troubleshooting and support
Is UBOAT currently Verified for Steam Deck?
Valve’s compatibility system uses four labels: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. Valve says, “The compatibility review process is ongoing: there are tens of thousands of titles already released on Steam, and new titles and game updates publish every day.” A current UBOAT rating is not established here, so check the game’s Steam store page for its present label rather than relying on older listings or reports.

What not to infer from older crash reports
A 2019 Proton issue recorded a crash under Proton 4.11-11 and quoted a developer’s then-current theory involving an NVIDIA texture library. That historical report cannot identify the cause of a Steam Deck crash today. Likewise, the available troubleshooting evidence points to software and settings—not to a particular accessory, storage upgrade, or repair purchase as a proven fix.
