udf.dll is a legacy Roxio file, not a normal Windows component. If Windows reports that udf.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the Roxio or Easy CD Creator program that needs it rather than downloading a loose DLL.
Quick identification
| Property | What is known |
|---|---|
| File | udf.dll |
| Description | UDF Module |
| Associated software | Easy CD Creator API |
| Developer | Roxio |
| File type | Third-party application DLL |
| Common role | Support for legacy Roxio disc-writing and UDF-reading features |
| Windows component | No evidence shows that it ships with Windows |
| Architecture | Commonly catalogued copies are identified as 32-bit, but the installed file should be verified in its application folder |
Roxio bundled UDF Reader functionality with Easy CD Creator and Easy Media Creator. That functionality was used to read UDF-formatted discs created by older DirectCD or Drag-to-Disc software.

The exact file can vary between Roxio releases and bundled OEM editions. Some third-party inventories report a version and size for udf.dll, but those values are not verified against an official Roxio binary. Treat the program’s installation folder, file properties, and digital signature as more useful evidence than a catalogue entry.
What the error means
You may see one of these messages:
- “This application failed to start because udf.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because udf.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading udf.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The file udf.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: udf.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in udf.dll.”
These messages do not always mean that the file itself is absent. Windows can report a missing DLL when:

- The file was removed from the Roxio installation folder.
- A dependent DLL is missing.
- The file is damaged or incompatible.
- Antivirus software quarantined it.
- A 32-bit application is loading the wrong copy.
- The Roxio installation was partly removed.
- The old application is no longer compatible with the current Windows release.
First identify the exact program shown in the error. It may be Easy CD Creator, Easy CD & DVD Creator, DirectCD, Drag-to-Disc, or an OEM disc-burning utility that included Roxio components.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the Roxio program
This is the most likely and safest fix.
Step 1: Find the owning application
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for:
- Roxio
- Easy CD Creator
- Easy CD & DVD Creator
- Easy Media Creator
- DirectCD
- Drag-to-Disc
- Note the exact product name and version if Windows displays one.
If the error appears when launching a shortcut, right-click that shortcut and choose Open file location. The executable name and folder often identify the Roxio product more precisely.
Step 2: Try Windows’ built-in repair option
- In Installed apps or Apps & features, select the Roxio entry.
- Choose Advanced options if it is available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the same Roxio program again.
Not every traditional desktop application provides an Advanced options or Repair button. If there is no repair option, continue with the reinstall procedure.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Step 3: Reinstall from legitimate media
Use the original Roxio installation disc, a backup of the installer you obtained legitimately, or an installer supplied through the product vendor or computer manufacturer.
- Back up any Roxio project files or disc-session data you still need.
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the Roxio product.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart the computer when prompted.
- Run the original installer.
- If Windows displays a compatibility warning, record the message rather than bypassing it blindly.
- Restart after installation.
- Launch the program from its newly installed shortcut.
A complete reinstall restores the expected DLL set and the dependencies that accompany it. Copying only udf.dll may leave the program unable to load another required file.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if the Roxio application opens without the udf.dll message and reaches its normal start screen. Test the specific feature that originally failed, but avoid writing to an important disc until you know the old software works reliably.
If the same error returns immediately after a clean reinstall, check antivirus history and application compatibility before trying another replacement file.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined a file from an old application. Do not assume that every detection is a false positive. An old, unsigned, or modified DLL can be unsafe.
Check Protection history
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry that names
udf.dllor the Roxio installation folder.
If the file came from an original, trusted Roxio installation and the detection is clearly incorrect, use the available Restore action only after confirming the source. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined item can cause it to be detected again.
If you do not trust the file, do not restore it. Remove the Roxio installation and reinstall it from clean, legitimate media instead. Never disable antivirus permanently just to make an old DLL load.

A legitimate application DLL normally resides in the folder belonging to the program that loads it. It should not normally be placed manually in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Locate the calling program
- Reproduce the error.
- Write down the program name shown in the message.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Open file location.
- Look for
udf.dllin that application folder or one of its installed subfolders.
You can also search File Explorer for udf.dll, but treat search results as clues rather than proof. Several copies may exist if different Roxio products were installed.
Right-click a copy and select Properties. Check:
- Location
- Description
- Details
- Digital Signatures, if present
A copy beside the Roxio executable is more relevant than one found in an unrelated program folder. DLL filenames are not globally unique, so another application could use the same name for an unrelated file.
Understand 32-bit and 64-bit behavior
The commonly catalogued Roxio file is associated with a 32-bit application. A 32-bit program can run on 64-bit Windows, but it needs 32-bit DLLs and 32-bit dependencies.
Do not assume that a 64-bit Windows installation requires a 64-bit udf.dll. The architecture must match the application that loads it. Installing a 64-bit runtime does not automatically satisfy a 32-bit Roxio program.
Windows uses separate file-system views for 32-bit and 64-bit applications. Microsoft explains this behavior in its documentation for the WOW64 file-system redirector.
If the file is present beside the Roxio executable but Windows reports that it is not designed to run on Windows, possible causes include:
- A damaged DLL.
- A mismatched copy from another Roxio release.
- A missing dependent DLL.
- An incompatible legacy application.
- A file loaded by the wrong program.
Reinstall the complete Roxio product instead of replacing the file manually.

Fix 4: Check whether the program is simply incompatible
Roxio Easy CD Creator and related UDF tools were designed for much older Windows versions. The existence of a Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer does not mean that every legacy disc-burning component will work correctly on it.

Try the built-in compatibility troubleshooter:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Troubleshoot.
- Select Other troubleshooters.
- Look for Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- Select Run.
- Choose the Roxio executable or browse to it when asked.
- Follow the suggested test options.
- Launch the program after the test completes.
You can also try compatibility settings manually:
- Right-click the Roxio executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version offered by the dialog.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Test the application.
Compatibility mode cannot repair a missing file or guarantee that an old optical-drive driver will work. It is useful only after the application has been correctly reinstalled.
If the program causes driver errors, optical-drive failures, or system instability after reinstalling, uninstall it. Use a current disc-burning application or Windows’ built-in disc features instead of reconstructing an obsolete Roxio installation.
Fix 5: Inspect the optical-drive driver
A driver is not the usual cause of a missing udf.dll message, but old Roxio software may interact with optical-drive drivers and filter components.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the optical drive and choose Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
If the device is disabled, right-click it and select Enable device. If Windows reports a driver problem, use Update driver, then choose Search automatically for drivers.
Do not remove a working storage or optical-drive driver solely because udf.dll is missing. The first repair remains the Roxio application reinstall.
If you are manually hunting through several hardware-driver versions and repeatedly testing the drive, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the Roxio application remains the definitive fix for a missing application DLL.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when other Windows files are affected
udf.dll belongs to third-party Roxio software, so System File Checker normally will not recreate it. SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components, not the private files of an old CD-burning application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse them when you also see Windows errors, damaged built-in features, update failures, or other missing Windows files.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Restart Windows if it requests a restart.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
Possible results include:
- Windows found no integrity violations.
- Windows found corrupt files and repaired them.
- Windows found corrupt files but could not repair some of them.
If SFC repairs Windows files, restart and test the application again. If the udf.dll error remains, return to the Roxio repair or reinstall procedure. The Windows scan did not replace the Roxio DLL because it is not normally part of the Windows component store.
When you are manually repeating DISM and SFC without knowing which component is damaged, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan that identifies reported system problems; repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the Roxio program that owns udf.dll.

Please verify your device type before purchasing
Fix 7: Investigate a missing dependency
Windows may say that udf.dll could not be found when the DLL exists but one of its dependencies does not.
The practical solution is to reinstall the entire Roxio product and read the complete error message carefully. Do not install a random runtime based only on the filename.
A Visual C++ Redistributable is relevant only if the application’s diagnostic message identifies a missing Microsoft runtime. For an old 32-bit Roxio application, an x86 dependency would be relevant. Installing only the x64 package does not satisfy a 32-bit application.
Microsoft lists the supported package names and architectures in its Visual C++ Redistributable documentation.
There is no evidence that installing a Visual C++ package by itself restores udf.dll.
What not to do
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download pages may provide:
- Malware or tampered files.
- The wrong Roxio release.
- The wrong architecture.
- A file with an unverified signature.
- A DLL that satisfies one error but exposes another missing dependency.
Even a genuine file may not belong in your particular Roxio installation. Use the original installation media, a legitimate vendor-provided installer, or the computer manufacturer’s recovery media when the product was bundled with the computer.
Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are not general-purpose storage locations for application DLLs. Manually copying a 32-bit application file into a Windows directory can create version conflicts and make diagnosis harder.

Do not run regsvr32 udf.dll as a default repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by ActiveX or COM components. A normal application-support DLL does not become usable merely because it was registered.
Do not run:
regsvr32 udf.dll
A failed registration can produce another misleading entry-point error and does not restore missing dependencies. Registration is appropriate only when the application’s official documentation specifically requires it for that component.

Do not use registry cleaners or DLL download sites utilities
Registry cleaning does not reconstruct a damaged Roxio installation. Utilities that promise to replace every missing DLL can install unrelated files or conceal the underlying compatibility problem.

- The program is Roxio, Easy CD Creator, or a bundled OEM application.
- The application was repaired or reinstalled from legitimate media.
udf.dllis located in the program’s own installation folder.- You did not copy an unverified DLL into a Windows system directory.
- Windows Security has no unresolved quarantine event for the file.
- The application architecture and DLL architecture are compatible.
- DISM and SFC were used only for broader Windows corruption.
- The application opens and reaches its normal interface.
- You have removed the obsolete program if you no longer need it.
FAQ
Is udf.dll a Windows file?
No evidence shows that udf.dll is a standard Windows component. It is associated with the Roxio Easy CD Creator API and older UDF-reading or disc-burning software.
What installed udf.dll?
The most likely owner is Roxio Easy CD Creator, Easy CD & DVD Creator, Easy Media Creator, DirectCD, Drag-to-Disc, or an OEM program bundled with Roxio components.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I download udf.dll?
No. Reinstall the Roxio application from legitimate media instead. A loose download can be malicious, mismatched, or unable to resolve the real dependency problem.
Should I run SFC for this error?
Run SFC if you also have damaged Windows files or built-in Windows features. SFC normally will not recreate a third-party Roxio DLL.
Should I register udf.dll with regsvr32?
Normally no. regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command, and an application-support DLL does not become functional simply by being registered.
Why does the error say the file is present but could not be loaded?
The file may be corrupt, incompatible, the wrong architecture, or dependent on another missing DLL. A complete Roxio reinstall is safer than replacing only the named file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if I no longer use Easy CD Creator?
Uninstall it. Removing obsolete software is safer than restoring a legacy DLL that no current application needs.
