udfimporter.dll Won’t Load? A Safe Nero Recovery Plan for Windows

Length10 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before changing Windows, confirm three details:

  1. Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

    Which program shows the error?
udfimporter.dll is associated with Nero Burning ROM. If the message names Nero, continue with this guide. If another program names the file, note that program because the correct repair belongs to that application.

  2. When does the message appear?
Note whether it happens when Nero starts, when Nero Vision opens, or during disc creation. Also record whether the message says the file is missing, could not be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows.

  3. Which Windows architecture are you using?
Go to Settings > System > About and check System type. A 32-bit Nero installation can run normally on 64-bit Windows, so 64-bit Windows does not mean that udfimporter.dll should be replaced with a 64-bit file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest repair is to restore the Nero installation that owns the file. Do not begin by copying a downloaded DLL into System32.

What udfimporter.dll is

udfimporter.dll is a Nero application library described as Nero Library. It is associated with Nero Burning ROM and the publisher lineage Ahead Software AG.

The name suggests a role related to importing UDF disc-file-system information. That functional description is an inference from the filename and Nero context, not a published technical specification.

A commonly indexed file record lists version 6.6.1.4 as a 32-bit build of approximately 0.47 MB. Those details come from third-party archival metadata, not a current Nero installer manifest, so they should not be used to select a replacement file.

This is not a Windows component. It is not supplied by Windows, DirectX, .NET, or the Visual C++ Redistributable. Nero normally keeps its private libraries in its own installation directory or a component folder. A historical Nero installation, for example, placed the file under a path similar to:

C:Program FilesNeroNero 7Core

The exact path depends on the Nero edition and installation choices.

Messages you may see

Windows may display messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because udfimporter.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “There was a problem starting udfimporter.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “Error loading udfimporter.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because udfimporter.dll was not found.”
  • “udfimporter.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

These are Windows loader-style messages commonly reported for this file. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that udfimporter.dll itself is absent. A DLL that it depends on may also be missing.

Fix 1: Repair Nero from Windows

Start with the installed application because this can restore the correct file without disturbing other programs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 11

  1. Close Nero and any related Nero process.
  2. Open Start > Settings.
  3. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  4. Find the Nero edition named in the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Start Nero and test the operation that produced the error.

If Repair is unavailable, or the repair finishes without changing the error, continue with a Nero reinstall.

Windows 10

  1. Close Nero.
  2. Open Start > Settings.
  3. Select Apps > Apps & features.
  4. Select the Nero entry.
  5. Choose Modify, Change, or Repair, depending on what the installer provides.
  6. Complete the repair wizard.
  7. Restart Windows and test Nero.

If Nero does not offer a repair option, do not substitute a random DLL. Use the matching Nero installer instead.

Fix 2: Reinstall the matching Nero edition

Reinstallation is the most reliable fix when the file is missing, damaged, or from the wrong Nero generation.

Before uninstalling

If Nero still opens, record its edition and version. Look under Nero’s Help menu for About, or check the Nero entry in Installed apps or Programs and Features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also locate your license information or installation media. Do not assume that an installer for Nero 6, 7, 8, or a later release can replace another generation’s files. Private application DLLs are not interchangeable merely because they have the same filename.

Remove the damaged installation

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
  2. Select the Nero product.
  3. Choose Uninstall.
  4. Follow Nero’s removal wizard.
  5. Restart Windows when prompted.

If the program is not listed in Settings, open Control Panel:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the Nero product.
  5. Choose Uninstall or Change.

Avoid manually deleting Nero folders before running the uninstaller. Manual deletion can leave registration data and shared components behind.

Install Nero again

Use the official Nero download or previous-installer area and select the installer that matches your purchased edition, license, and Windows-compatible release. If you have an original Nero disc, use that media only when it is known to be intact and appropriate for your license.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Download or obtain the matching installer from Nero.
  2. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
  3. Follow the setup prompts.
  4. Restart Windows after installation.
  5. Open Nero and repeat the action that previously failed.

If Nero starts normally and the disc-related feature works, the repair is complete. If the same message returns immediately, continue with the checks below rather than copying another DLL into a Windows directory.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may quarantine a legitimate file after an installation problem or a detection involving the installation folder.

  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Open Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving Nero or udfimporter.dll.
  5. Expand the event and inspect its location and detection details.

Only restore a file when you can verify that it came from your legitimate Nero installation or trusted Nero installation media. If the file is in an unrelated folder, has an unexpected name, or came from an unverified download, do not restore it.

If a legitimate Nero file was quarantined:

  1. Use the available Restore action.
  2. Reinstall Nero from trusted installation media if restoration is not offered.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Test Nero again.

Do not disable antivirus protection simply to make Nero start. A suspicious file with a familiar filename is not automatically genuine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check whether a dependency is missing

A loader message can name udfimporter.dll even when the real problem is a second library that it needs. Pay attention to every filename in the dialog, including names beginning with:

MSVCP
VCRUNTIME
api-ms-win

If the message specifically names an MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll file, install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package identified by the Nero installer or error. Microsoft provides separate x86 and x64 packages.

For a 32-bit Nero program on 64-bit Windows, the x86 runtime is generally the relevant package. Installing only the x64 package may not satisfy a 32-bit application.

  1. Use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable page.
  2. Select the architecture named by the application’s requirements.
  3. Download the official installer.
  4. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  5. Choose Repair if that option appears, or complete the installation.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Test Nero again.

Do not install every Visual C++ package as a guessing exercise. Several versions can coexist, and a runtime package does not supply udfimporter.dll itself.

If Nero’s installer does not identify a Microsoft runtime and the error names only udfimporter.dll, reinstall Nero first.

Fix 5: Repair broader Windows components

Windows repair commands are appropriate when other Windows programs also show missing or damaged system-file errors. They do not normally recreate a third-party Nero DLL.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test Nero again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart before testing. If both commands complete without finding a problem, the missing Nero file still needs to be repaired through Nero’s installer.

Repeating these commands will not replace a missing private application library. If you are manually hunting through Windows components and cannot tell which repair changed anything, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying problems; its free scan shows what it found, while repair features require the full version. Reinstalling Nero remains the definitive fix when this specific application file is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Do not register this DLL with regsvr32

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. An application library is not automatically a COM or ActiveX component.

Do not expect this command to repair Nero:

regsvr32 udfimporter.dll

It may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not prove that Windows is missing a registration entry. It usually means that this DLL is not designed to be registered that way.

Use Nero repair or reinstallation instead.

Fix 7: Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64

Do not place udfimporter.dll in either of these folders:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

Those folders are not interchangeable labels for “all DLLs.” A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows can run through WOW64 while still loading its own private DLL from the Nero directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows normally searches an application’s directory before system locations for ordinary desktop applications. Copying a DLL into a system directory can:

  • Leave Nero using the wrong version.
  • Create conflicts with another application.
  • Hide the actual missing dependency.
  • Cause an incompatible file to load.
  • Increase the risk of DLL search-order abuse.

If you already copied a standalone file into a Windows system directory, remove it only if you can identify that it was manually added and is not a Windows component. Then repair or reinstall Nero.

Fix 8: Update drivers only for a device-specific error

A missing udfimporter.dll message is not, by itself, evidence of an optical-drive driver problem. Do not update drivers as the first response to this filename.

Use Device Manager only when the error also concerns drive detection, a disabled optical drive, or a device warning.

  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
  8. Test the drive and Nero.

For a broader driver problem, check the computer or drive manufacturer’s support page and match the exact model. If you are tired of hunting through Device Manager and guessing which of many drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; the free scan shows the findings, while driver installation requires the full version. A driver update still will not replace a missing Nero application DLL.

When to suspect the wrong version or architecture

A message saying that udfimporter.dll is “not designed to run on Windows” usually points to corruption, an incompatible build, or an architecture mismatch.

Common causes include:

  • A file copied from a different Nero generation.
  • An incomplete uninstall followed by a partial reinstall.
  • Damaged installation media.
  • A file quarantined during installation.
  • A 32-bit application receiving an incompatible replacement.
  • A dependent library with the wrong version.

The indexed build commonly associated with this filename is 32-bit. That does not make it invalid on 64-bit Windows. Windows 64-bit editions commonly run older 32-bit desktop programs through WOW64.

The safe correction is to remove the mismatched file and reinstall the exact Nero product that produced the error. Do not install both copies of the DLL in System32 and SysWOW64.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you no longer need Nero

If Nero is obsolete or you no longer burn or author discs with it, uninstall it instead of restoring a standalone DLL.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Select Nero.
  3. Choose Uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Check that the error no longer appears.

If a startup error remains after removal, open Task Manager, select Startup apps, and disable an obsolete Nero launcher only when you recognize it and no longer use the program. Do not delete unknown startup entries solely because their names look similar.

If the problem began immediately after an installation or update and a restore point exists, System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs while leaving personal files in place. Search Windows for Recovery, open Open System Restore, select an appropriate restore point, and review the affected programs before confirming.

Avoid standalone DLL downloads

Downloading udfimporter.dll from a random DLL download site is risky. The file may contain malware, belong to another Nero release, use the wrong architecture, or be missing the dependencies that caused the error. A copied file can also create DLL search-order problems and conceal a damaged installation.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The safe sources are:

  • The Nero installer for your licensed edition.
  • Nero’s official previous-version or installer archive.
  • Original, trusted Nero installation media.
  • Microsoft’s official pages for any runtime explicitly named by the error.

The filename alone is not proof that a replacement is genuine.

Final escalation checklist

If Nero still fails after reinstalling it, record these details before contacting Nero support:

  • The exact wording of the message.
  • The executable named in the dialog.
  • Your Nero edition and version.
  • The full path where Nero is installed.
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Any second DLL named in the message.
  • Whether Windows Security quarantined a Nero file.
  • Whether the error affects Nero only or other programs too.

If the file appears in an unrelated directory, run a full Windows Security scan and remove the suspicious installation before reinstalling Nero from trusted media.

FAQ

Is udfimporter.dll a Windows file?

No. It is a Nero application DLL, not a normal Windows system component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy it to System32?

No. Restore it to the Nero installation through repair or reinstallation. Do not place it in System32 or SysWOW64.

Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?

Only when the error also names a missing Microsoft runtime or Nero explicitly requires one. Visual C++ does not supply udfimporter.dll.

Should I run regsvr32 udfimporter.dll?

Normally no. This application library is not automatically a registerable COM component.

Can 32-bit Nero run on 64-bit Windows?

Yes. A 32-bit Nero installation can run on 64-bit Windows through WOW64. Use the correct Nero files rather than searching for a 64-bit replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the best fix when the file is missing?

Repair or reinstall the same Nero edition using its official installer. That restores the application’s file set and any dependencies together.
