If Windows reports that rpclts5.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the failure usually belongs to an old application rather than modern Windows itself. rpclts5.dll is a genuine historical Microsoft RPC component, but it is not a current Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or general-purpose Windows redistributable.
The errors you may see
Common messages include:
- “This application failed to start because rpclts5.dll was not found.”
- “The file rpclts5.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: rpclts5.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading rpclts5.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because rpclts5.dll is missing from your computer.”
These messages are not proof that the DLL itself is the only problem. Windows can show “the specified module could not be found” when a dependency required by the DLL is missing.

The 60-second answer
rpclts5.dll is a real Microsoft Windows DLL described as the RPC NetBIOS Server Interface DLL. Microsoft documents it as a server NetBIOS transport for RPC and lists it for down-level support on Windows NT, Windows 98, and Windows 95, not as a normal modern Windows 10 or Windows 11 component. Microsoft’s RPC documentation explains its historical role.

Do not download rpclts5.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32. A same-named file may come from the wrong Windows generation, have the wrong architecture, lack required dependencies, or be unsafe. There is no verified current Microsoft package named “rpclts5.dll Redistributable.”
If multiple Windows components are failing, repair Windows with DISM followed by SFC. If only one old application fails, repairing that application is more likely to work than replacing a system file.
What rpclts5.dll belongs to
Microsoft identifies rpclts5.dll as a historical Windows RPC transport library. Its internal description is RPC NetBIOS Server Interface DLL, and it is associated with the Microsoft Windows Operating System.
The important distinction is between historical Windows support and current Windows support:
- It is a genuine Microsoft component.
- Microsoft documents it for Windows NT, Windows 98, and Windows 95 down-level support.
- It is not established as a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file.
- It is not identified as part of Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or a modern driver package.
- No current standalone Microsoft download for this DLL has been identified.
A program that asks for this filename on Windows 10 or Windows 11 is therefore usually an old application, an incomplete installer, an incorrectly packaged program, or a damaged installation. It can also be a leftover startup entry from software that was partly removed.
Before changing anything, record:
- The exact application name.
- The complete error text.
- The path shown in the error, if any.
- Your Windows edition and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the problem began after an uninstall, update, antivirus quarantine, backup restore, cleanup, or interrupted installation.
- Whether Windows itself is unstable or only one program refuses to start.
The path is especially useful. A request from an application folder points toward that application. A request involving an old Windows directory may indicate a compatibility problem. A request from System32 or SysWOW64 still does not prove that manually copying a DLL is appropriate.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the requesting program
This is the most likely solution when one old program produces the error and Windows otherwise works normally.

Open the application’s launcher or management utility and look for an option named Verify, Repair, Scan and repair, or Check files.
If the program is installed through Windows settings:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If Repair does not solve the problem, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Look for Change, Repair, or a similar option.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the program from Installed apps or Programs and Features. Restart Windows, then reinstall it from the original installation media or the software publisher’s official installer.
Do not copy a DLL from another computer as a first step. The correct file may depend on the program’s build, operating-system generation, language, architecture, and other files installed alongside it.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The application starts without the
rpclts5.dllmessage. - The program reaches its normal main screen.
- No new missing-DLL or “specified module could not be found” message appears.
If the same error returns immediately, the installer may not support your version of Windows, or the program may require additional legacy components. Check the application’s compatibility guidance and consider running it in a supported older Windows environment.
Fix 2: Check whether the application is too old
A missing DLL may be only the first visible symptom. Some older programs were designed for 16-bit or early 32-bit Windows environments and may not run correctly on 64-bit Windows even after their files are restored.
Try Windows compatibility settings:
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Other troubleshooters.
- Run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- Select the affected application.
- Follow the suggested tests.
- Test the program after each change.
You can also configure the executable directly:
- Right-click the program shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an appropriate older Windows version.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the application again.
Compatibility mode cannot turn a fundamentally incompatible 16-bit application into a supported 64-bit program. A 32-bit DLL copied into a 64-bit Windows directory also does not solve an incompatible executable.

System32 and SysWOW64 are not reliable labels for deciding where a DLL belongs. Windows uses these directories as part of its compatibility and redirection mechanisms, and the correct location depends on the component and process architecture.
Fix 3: Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC
Use this path when several Windows components are failing, Windows behaves abnormally, or you have reason to believe that protected system files were damaged.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses, while SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when possible. Follow Microsoft’s System File Checker repair procedure.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Keep the Command Prompt window open.
The process can take time and may appear to pause. Do not close the window just because the percentage does not change immediately.

Run SFC
After DISM completes, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Restart Windows after the scan, then test the program again.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files were not found to be damaged.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: review the CBS log and continue with Windows repair guidance.
- DISM reports that the source files could not be found: use a matching repair source documented by Microsoft rather than substituting a downloaded DLL.
If SFC repairs files but the application still fails, the program may be searching its own directory, using an incompatible executable, or missing another legacy dependency. SFC is not guaranteed to restore rpclts5.dll on a modern Windows installation.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and uncertain. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; the repair functions are provided by the full version, and it is optional rather than required.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
If the program worked until antivirus software removed or quarantined a file, inspect the detection before reinstalling anything.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open an entry associated with the affected application.
- Check the original path, detection name, and publisher information.
Use Restore only if you have verified that the file came from the legitimate application installation and that the detection is a false positive. Microsoft warns that allowing a file can expose the device if the file is actually malicious. See Microsoft’s Protection history guidance.
If the file came from an unknown download, do not restore it. Remove the untrusted copy and reinstall the application from its original trusted source. If malware is suspected, run a full scan and follow Microsoft’s malware removal and Defender Offline guidance.

A Windows update or software change can expose an old application’s compatibility problem. Install pending Windows updates first:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check again until no further ordinary updates are offered.
A driver is not a known source package for rpclts5.dll, so do not install a random driver merely because the error mentions a DLL. Check drivers only when the failure began after hardware or driver changes, or when Windows reports related device problems.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To inspect Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click a device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only with a trusted Windows Update or hardware-vendor source.
- If the issue began immediately after an update, consider Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Windows Features are also worth checking only when the application’s documentation specifically requires a legacy Windows feature. Open Start, search for Turn Windows features on or off, open it, and review the listed components. Do not enable unrelated features as a substitute for repairing the application.
When several devices need attention, manually hunting through hardware versions and choosing the correct package can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not required for a program-specific rpclts5.dll repair.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the error began after an update, driver installation, software removal, or system configuration change, System Restore may return system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs to an earlier state without removing personal files.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace a proper repair of the application. If the problem is an incomplete installation, reinstall the program after restoring Windows.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run regsvr32 rpclts5.dll as a general missing-DLL fix.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide COM self-registration through an exported function such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents this behavior in its regsvr32 reference and DLL self-registration guidance.
rpclts5.dll is documented as an RPC transport library, not as an established self-registering COM component. The command may therefore produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found.” Registration does not restore missing dependencies, repair an old installer, or make an incompatible application run.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A downloaded file may have:
- The wrong Windows release.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- A different language or build.
- Missing dependencies.
- Altered or malicious contents.
- No trustworthy publisher verification.
It may also hide the real cause, such as a broken application installation or a missing dependency of rpclts5.dll. Copying it into System32 or beside an executable can create additional loading and security problems.

- Windows Update.
- Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC tools.
- A verified backup or restore point.
There is no need to install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because an error ends in .dll. Those packages do not correspond to the documented identity of rpclts5.dll.
Frequently asked questions
Is rpclts5.dll a genuine Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a historical Microsoft Windows DLL for the RPC NetBIOS server transport. Microsoft documents it for down-level Windows support.
Does Windows 11 or Windows 10 normally need it?
Microsoft’s documentation lists it for Windows NT, Windows 98, and Windows 95 down-level support. Do not assume that a normal current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should contain it.
Which modern game or application uses it?
No reliable modern application association has been established. Identify the exact program, installer, full error text, and requested path before choosing a repair.
Should I copy the file into System32?
No. The directory name does not establish the correct architecture, version, source, or dependency set. Repair the requesting program first.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this filename alone. rpclts5.dll is not identified as one of those runtime packages.
What if only one old program fails?
Repair or reinstall that program from its original trusted source. This is more probative than running system-wide repairs when Windows otherwise works normally.
What if every old program fails?
Investigate Windows corruption, a recent system change, malware, storage problems, or a damaged user profile. Run DISM and SFC, review Protection history, install updates, and consider System Restore.
