uihub.dll is a real Windows file, and errors mentioning uihub.dll usually point to a damaged legacy Windows input component rather than a modern application runtime. The file is associated with Microsoft Tablet PC Flicks and Pen Feedback Component, part of the older Windows tablet and pen-input subsystem.
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because uihub.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because uihub.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting uihub.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “uihub.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording varies. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that uihub.dll is missing, but it can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing or damaged.

The 60-second answer
Do not download uihub.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32. First:
- Check whether Microsoft Defender quarantined the file.
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt.
- Run DISM, then System File Checker:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
- Restart and test the affected application again.
This is the supported repair route for a missing or corrupted protected Windows file. If the error appears only in one old program, repair or reinstall that program from its original developer source after completing the Windows checks.

What is uihub.dll?
Historical Windows file inventories identify UIHub.dll as Microsoft Tablet PC Flicks and Pen Feedback Component, published by Microsoft and associated with the Windows operating system. Microsoft documents the underlying Tablet PC input platform and pen-flick feedback functions in its Tablet PC Platform Input Core and pen-flick and feedback API documentation.
Historical catalogues list:
- A 64-bit Vista-era build,
6.0.6001.18000, approximately 2.52 MB - A 64-bit Windows 7-era build,
6.1.7600.16385, approximately 2.9 MB - A typical 64-bit location of
%WINDIR%System32
Those are historical file records, not a guarantee that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 build contains the same file. Current Windows component contents can differ by edition, build, servicing state, and installed features.
uihub.dll is not identified as a DirectX, .NET, Visual C++ runtime, or hardware driver file. An application may still mention it because it loads an older Windows component directly or because a damaged dependency causes the Windows loader to report the wrong item.
First, identify what is actually failing
Before replacing anything, record:
- Your Windows edition and build
- The application name
- The complete error message
- The file path shown in the error
- Whether the failure occurs at startup, login, or only inside one program
- Any related Event Viewer entry
- Whether

Press Enter and record the version information.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit compatibility files. The names are confusing, but do not move a file between these folders. A 32-bit application can fail when given an incompatible 64-bit DLL, and a historical DLL from another Windows release may produce “not designed to run on Windows.”
If uihub.dll exists but the error remains, the missing item may be a dependency rather than the named file itself.
Fix 1: Check Defender quarantine
A legitimate Windows file can be quarantined after corruption or a security detection. A malicious file can also use the same filename, so do not restore it solely because its name is familiar.

- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
uihub.dll. - Expand the detection and inspect its path, threat name, and action.
Restore the file only when the detection clearly identifies a trusted Microsoft system file and the computer is otherwise clean. Microsoft explains the implications of restoring quarantined items in its Protection History guidance.
If the path is an application folder, a temporary folder, or another location unrelated to Windows, leave the item quarantined. Update Defender, run Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan, and continue with DISM and SFC rather than downloading a replacement.
Fix 2: Install updates, then repair Windows
Windows Update can restore servicing components and correct files after an incomplete update.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
Microsoft’s Windows Update instructions cover these steps.
After restarting, open Start, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, select Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies from that repaired store. This order matters. Microsoft documents the procedure in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
Restart after SFC completes and test the original program.

If you want to avoid repeatedly hunting through Windows logs and guessing which repair step changed the system, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and identify repair actions; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and DISM/SFC remain the appropriate Microsoft repair tools.

- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”: protected files appear intact. Investigate the application, dependency, path, or architecture next.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them”: restart and test the program again.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them”: inspect the CBS log and use a matching Windows repair source.
- “Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation”: restart and retry, or run the scan from Windows Recovery Environment if normal Windows cannot complete it.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft supports using a matching installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with a repair source matching the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and build. Do not use an arbitrary folder from another PC.
Fix 3: Repair the program that reports the error
If the error occurs only when one old application starts, the application may have an incorrect dependency, an incomplete installation, or a compatibility problem.
First check for an in-app update. If there is no updater:

For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking function. Do not assume the game itself contains a Microsoft system DLL merely because it reports the filename.
If the program is very old and the failure began after moving it to Windows 10 or Windows 11, compatibility may be the real issue. Right-click its shortcut, select Properties > Compatibility, and test the compatibility troubleshooter. Do not use compatibility mode to justify copying an old DLL into a Windows folder.
Fix 4: Check dependencies and architecture
A DLL loader error does not always identify the true missing file. UIHub.dll may be present while one of its normal Windows dependencies is damaged or unavailable.

Historical dependency inventories associate the component with standard Windows libraries including ntdll.dll, kernel32.dll, user32.dll, ole32.dll, oleaut32.dll, UxTheme.dll, and msvcrt.dll. Do not download these individually. Repair Windows instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck the application architecture:
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Review System type.
- Confirm whether the application is a 32-bit or 64-bit program from its documentation or installer.
- Keep 32-bit and 64-bit files in their intended Windows locations.
The presence of a file in System32 does not prove that it is suitable for every program. A file copied from Vista or Windows 7 can be the wrong version even when the filename matches.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine repair
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft describes it as a tool for registering suitable DLL files with Windows.
There is no evidence that UIHub.dll is a COM or ActiveX component requiring registration. Running:
regsvr32 uihub.dll
is therefore not a normal fix. It may return an error stating that the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not repair a missing file or dependency.
Fix 6: Investigate drivers only when evidence points there
uihub.dll is not identified as a driver. Do not begin by replacing display, pen, touch, or chipset drivers unless Device Manager shows a related fault or the error began after a driver change.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices, Monitors, Display adapters, and any pen or tablet category.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Update driver.
- If the problem began immediately after an update, open Properties > Driver and review whether Roll Back Driver is available.
Use Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support page for drivers. If manually checking dozens of devices and matching driver versions is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and a driver update will not replace the Windows component when the actual fault is file corruption.
Fix 7: Use System Restore or Windows recovery
If the error began immediately after an update, cleanup utility, driver installation, or system change, System Restore may help.

Is uihub.dll malware?
Not by filename alone. A genuine historical UIHub.dll is associated with Microsoft’s legacy tablet and pen-input component, but malware can use the same name.
Check:
- The full path
- Microsoft’s digital signature in Properties > Digital Signatures
- Defender’s detection details
- Whether the file is in a Windows directory or beside an unrelated executable
- Whether the file appeared after installing an unknown program
A file outside the expected Windows location is not automatically malicious, but it deserves additional scrutiny. Run Defender scans and repair Windows rather than replacing the suspicious file with another download.
FAQ
Does uihub.dll belong to Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Historical evidence is strongest for Vista and Windows 7. The exact presence of the component in a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 build is not established here, so check the specific installation rather than assuming every modern build includes it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should I download uihub.dll?
No. Unaffiliated DLL downloads can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to another Windows release, or fail because the real problem is a dependency. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching recovery media, or the affected application’s official installer.
Is uihub.dll a driver?
No evidence identifies it as a driver. It is associated with an older Windows tablet, pen-flick, and visual feedback subsystem.
Why does an unrelated application mention it?
The application may load a legacy Windows component, use an old installer, or trigger a loader error caused by another missing dependency. The filename alone does not prove that the application shipped the DLL.
What if the file exists but Windows still reports it as missing?
The loader may be unable to load a dependency, or the file may be incompatible, damaged, unsigned, or the wrong 32-bit/64-bit architecture. Run DISM and SFC, check the exact path and Event Viewer entry, and repair the application if only one program is affected.

Not as a normal fix. A matching filename is not enough; Windows edition, build, language, architecture, signature, and servicing state must also match. Use Microsoft-supported repair or recovery methods instead.
