uiutil.dll is an application DLL, not a Windows system file. If Windows says uiutil.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair the application that requested it rather than copying an unrelated DLL into a Windows system folder.

The filename is commonly associated with older Mathcad software, but it has also appeared in other legacy products. Identify the launching program and its installation folder before replacing anything.

Item Identification
Filename uiutil.dll
Internal description UIUtil DLL
Product description UIUtil Dynamic Link Library
Reported developer Mathsoft Engineering & Education, Inc.
File category Third-party application DLL
Common association Older Mathcad installations
Important limitation The same filename has also been used by other legacy applications

Historical file inventories commonly describe the Mathsoft copy as a 32-bit DLL, but that metadata is not a current official specification. A file with the same name from Mathcad, Waters MassLynx, DeLorme software, or another product may not be interchangeable.

Also check the exact filename. These are different files:

  • uiutil.dll
  • uiutil2.dll
  • uiutil2r.dll

Do not use uiutil2r.dll to replace uiutil.dll, or vice versa.

Before changing anything, write down:

  1. The complete error message.
  2. The executable named in the message or shortcut.
  3. The program’s installation folder.
  4. Whether the program is Mathcad, MassLynx, DeLorme software, or something else.
  5. What changed immediately before the failure.

Reinstalling, upgrading, uninstalling, disk cleanup, antivirus quarantine, moving the application, and restoring a backup can all leave an application without its original DLL.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the parent application

This is the safest and most likely solution because uiutil.dll belongs to an application rather than Windows.

Try the Windows repair option

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps & features.
  4. Find the program that produces the error.
  5. Select its three-dot menu, or select the program entry.
  6. Choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

If the program does not offer Repair, open its entry and look for Modify, Change, or Repair. The available choices depend on how the original installer was built.

A successful repair normally restores the DLL beside the application’s executable and allows the program to start. If the error remains, continue with the installer-based repair.

Run the original installer

Use the application’s genuine installer, licensed installation media, or a backup made from the same installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close the failing application.
  2. Locate the original setup program.
  3. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  4. Choose Repair, Modify, or Reinstall when offered.
  5. Keep the original installation folder unless you have a specific reason to change it.
  6. Allow setup to complete.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Launch the application from its normal shortcut.

For older Mathcad releases, use the licensed installation media or the software vendor’s support channel for that specific release. A current product download page may provide newer Mathcad products without providing a standalone copy of this historical DLL.

If the installer reports that the program is already installed but offers no repair, uninstall the application from Settings > Apps, restart Windows, and reinstall it from trusted original media. Back up application files and user documents first, especially if the program stores worksheets or project data inside its installation directory.

Verify the restored file

Open the program’s installation folder and check whether uiutil.dll is beside the executable that launches the program. Do not judge authenticity by the filename alone.

The repair worked if:

  • The original error no longer appears.
  • The application opens normally.
  • The program’s own features work without a second missing-DLL message.

If a new message names another file, record that filename. A message naming mfc*.dll, msvcr*.dll, msvcp*.dll, or vcruntime*.dll points to a separate runtime dependency rather than proof that the repaired uiutil.dll is wrong.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined an application DLL. Restore it only after confirming that it came from the correct installed application and that the installer or source is legitimate.

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent items whose action mentions uiutil.dll or the affected application.
  6. Expand an entry to inspect its path and detection details.
  7. If you have verified the file and source, choose Actions > Restore where available.
  8. Reopen the application.

Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined file can cause Microsoft Defender to detect it again. Do not add a broad exclusion for the entire Windows directory or for an unknown download. If Defender quarantines the file again, stop and scan the installer and the computer rather than repeatedly restoring it.

The safest long-term correction is usually to reinstall the application from trusted original media. That gives you a clean copy and can also restore other files removed during the same event.

Fix 3: Restore the application folder

The application may have been moved, cleaned, partially deleted, or restored from an incomplete backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the executable’s path:

  1. Right-click the program’s shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Read the path in Target.
  4. Select Open File Location if available.
  5. Confirm that the executable and its application files are in the expected folder.
  6. Search that folder for uiutil.dll.

If the executable is present but the DLL is missing, restore the complete application from a known-good backup or reinstall it. Do not copy only a random file from another computer. Even when two files have the same filename, they may belong to different products or historical releases.

If the shortcut points to a drive or folder that no longer exists, correct the shortcut only after confirming where the application was installed. Moving just the executable or copying the program folder to another location can break additional dependencies, licensing components, configuration files, and registry entries.

Fix 4: Repair missing application prerequisites

Sometimes the message says that the specified module could not be found even though uiutil.dll is visible in the application folder. In that situation, a dependency of uiutil.dll may be missing.

First reinstall the prerequisites named by the application’s installer or documentation. Depending on the legacy program, these may include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • .NET Framework 3.5
  • MSXML
  • An older Visual C++ runtime
  • Other components supplied with the original application

Enable .NET Framework 3.5

If the program requires .NET Framework 3.5:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Expand .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0).
  5. Select the available components.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Follow the prompts and restart Windows if requested.

If Windows cannot obtain the required files, use the application’s genuine installation media or follow the instructions supplied by your organization. Do not download replacement DLLs to work around a failed Windows Feature installation.

Install the appropriate Visual C++ runtime

A Visual C++ Redistributable may be relevant when dependency analysis or the application’s documentation identifies a missing C/C++ runtime. It is not the source of uiutil.dll, and installing it blindly is not a guaranteed fix.

Use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Select the architecture required by the application. A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 runtime even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.

Install the version specified by the legacy application’s installer when possible. Restart Windows and test the application again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Many older Windows applications are 32-bit. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs the correct 32-bit application DLL and matching dependencies.

Do not replace a 32-bit application DLL with a 64-bit file. Do not assume that a copy found in C:WindowsSystem32 is appropriate. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is associated with 64-bit system components, while 32-bit applications use Windows compatibility redirection and their own application files.

The preferred arrangement is:

  • The original uiutil.dll is supplied by the application.
  • It is stored in that application’s folder.
  • Its architecture matches the executable.
  • Its version belongs to the same application release.

If an older program worked on an earlier Windows release but fails after an upgrade, check compatibility for that exact application version. Legacy Mathcad releases, for example, may have prerequisites and platform limitations that differ by release. Compatibility mode can be tested, but it cannot create a missing DLL or make an unsupported dependency available.

To test compatibility mode:

  1. Right-click the application’s executable or shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Choose an appropriate earlier Windows version.
  6. Select Apply, then OK.
  7. Launch the application.

If this does not help, remove the compatibility setting and return to repairing the application itself.

Fix 6: Repair broader Windows component corruption

Because uiutil.dll is normally a third-party application file, Windows system repair commands will not usually recreate it. Use them when other Windows features are also failing, system files are damaged, or the application failure began with broader operating-system corruption.

Save your work, then:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the application again.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command is expected to restore an application-owned uiutil.dll.

If DISM or SFC reports that it could not repair files, run the commands again only after noting the result and restarting as appropriate. Do not keep repeating them as a substitute for reinstalling the parent application.

If you prefer assistance while working through component repair, Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies; repairing the findings requires the full version. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when uiutil.dll belongs to that program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers only when indicated

A graphics, printer, instrument, or other device driver is not a normal source of uiutil.dll. Consider a driver update only if the error began after hardware changes, the application’s vendor identifies a driver dependency, or Device Manager reports a related device problem.

To inspect drivers:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the application or hardware.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Review the Device status message under General.
  7. Open the Driver tab.
  8. Use Update Driver or Roll Back Driver only when the timing and device evidence support it.

Prefer the hardware manufacturer’s official driver source. Do not replace uiutil.dll with a driver file.

If checking dozens of devices manually is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can perform a free scan showing which drivers it identifies; installing updates requires the full version. A driver update is not required for every uiutil.dll error, and reinstalling the affected application remains the correct repair when that program owns the DLL.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a known change

System Restore can help when the file disappeared immediately after a known installation, cleanup, or system change and no clean application installer is available. It is not a substitute for obtaining the original application files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Review the changes.
  8. Select Next, then Finish.
  9. Allow Windows to restart.
  10. Test the application.

Personal documents are not normally removed, but applications, drivers, and updates installed after the selected restore point may be affected. If System Restore does not resolve the error, reinstall the parent application from trusted media.

What not to do

Do not download an isolated DLL from a random website

A filename match does not prove that a downloaded file is authentic, safe, compatible, or intended for your application. An isolated download may contain malware, the wrong architecture, the wrong historical version, or a file from a different product. It may also leave the original installation damaged and fail when another dependency is loaded.

Use the application’s official installer, licensed installation media, a verified backup, or the vendor’s support channel instead.

Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64

Windows normally searches the application directory before system directories for an ordinary desktop application. Microsoft recommends keeping application-specific DLLs with the application. Copying a third-party file into a global folder can create version conflicts and security risks.

If you have a verified original file from the same application installation, copy it only to the application’s own directory and only when the application vendor’s repair process is unavailable.

Do not use registry cleaners

A registry cleaner cannot recreate the missing contents of uiutil.dll. It can remove application settings or installation information and make repair more difficult.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary application runtime DLL may not support registration.

If the application vendor specifically instructs you to register a component, use the exact command and architecture they provide. Otherwise, do not run:

regsvr32 uiutil.dll

An error from that command does not show that the file is missing, and successful registration would not repair a missing dependency.

FAQ

Does uiutil.dll belong to Mathcad?

It commonly refers to the Mathsoft UIUtil DLL used by older Mathcad installations, but the filename is not globally unique. Other legacy software has also used uiutil.dll. Confirm the executable and folder before replacing it.

Is uiutil.dll a Microsoft file?

No. It is an application DLL associated with third-party software. It is not part of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable itself and is not normally restored by SFC.

Should I install a Visual C++ Redistributable?

Only when the affected application requires it or dependency evidence identifies a missing Visual C++ runtime. Install the architecture matching the application. Do not expect it to supply uiutil.dll.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Windows say the specified module cannot be found when the file is present?

The message can refer to a dependency required by uiutil.dll, not only to uiutil.dll itself. Repair the application and install its documented prerequisites before considering other Windows repairs.

Can I copy uiutil.dll from another computer?

Only if it is a verified original file from the same application, release, and architecture, and you copy it into that application’s folder. Reinstalling from trusted media is safer because it restores the complete dependency set.

What if the error names uiutil2r.dll?

Stop using this procedure as a replacement guide. uiutil2r.dll is a different filename and requires file-specific troubleshooting.

What information should I provide to support?

Record the exact error text, application and executable name, full installation path, Windows version, whether Windows is 64-bit, and what changed before the failure. Also note whether the file is present, whether antivirus quarantined it, and whether repairing or reinstalling the application changed the message.
