Sphero’s Ultimate Lightning McQueen is an app-controlled Cars character toy, but today it is best treated as a legacy collectible rather than a supported remote-control car. Sphero says its dedicated legacy app is no longer available to download and that it cannot provide support or replacement parts for certain discontinued models. That makes app access the key question for anyone considering a used one.
What is Ultimate Lightning McQueen?
Ultimate Lightning McQueen is a physical, app-enabled remote-control vehicle modeled on the Cars character. Its appeal is not just driving: period reviews describe a toy designed to bring the character to life through expressive movement and Cars-themed interaction.
The product is discontinued and is not among Sphero’s currently supported robot families. Sphero’s legacy-products notice groups Ultimate Lightning McQueen with older products and says Sphero cannot provide support or replacement parts for certain discontinued models. It also says the Sphero Droids App is no longer available for download.
Can you still use it with the app?
Do not assume you can install an official control app on a new phone. Sphero’s current Sphero Edu compatibility matrix lists Ultimate Lightning McQueen as a 2017 model but shows no supported platform for it. The Sphero Edu App listing in Apple’s App Store also identifies Lightning McQueen as unsupported; Sphero’s current app catalog focuses on other robot families.

That does not establish whether an app already installed on an older device will continue to work. Function may depend on the particular device, operating system, app installation, and toy, so a used example should be demonstrated connecting and responding before purchase. The cited sources do not establish that the car can be fully operated without its app.
What did the original reviews say about play?
Driving and character interaction
Tech Advisor’s review described app-based driving and a pit-stop game. Stuff’s 2017 review praised the character impression. These are launch-period observations, not a current test of the toy or its app.

The movie watch-along feature
Both reviewers reported that the movie-listening or watch-along feature was not enabled in the versions they reviewed. They therefore could not verify how it synchronized or operated. Tech Advisor also mentioned a then-planned expansion to later Cars films; that 2017-era plan should not be read as a description of current functionality.
What are the published specifications?
Entertainment Earth’s retailer listing gives the following figures. They are retailer-published specifications, not independent measurements; an aged battery in a used toy may not deliver the listed runtime.

Because the toy depends on app access and has no current Sphero support or replacement parts, prioritize proof that the specific unit works over its advertised historical specifications.
- App access: Ask the seller to demonstrate it connecting to a device and responding to controls using an app they already have available.
- Physical condition: Check the wheels, articulated mouth, display, and body for damage or missing pieces.
- Battery and charging: Confirm that it charges and runs; the historical “up to 40 minutes” figure is not a guarantee for an older battery.
- Completeness and terms: Verify which charger and accessories are included, and check the seller’s return policy.
- Seller description: Treat claims of current official support or easy replacement parts cautiously in light of Sphero’s legacy-product notice.
Verdict
Ultimate Lightning McQueen remains an appealing character collectible for Cars fans who value its expressive, app-led design. It is a risky choice if you want a dependable, ready-to-use RC toy: official app availability and compatibility are limited, Sphero does not support the legacy product, and the original movie feature was not verified by the cited reviewers. Buy only if the seller can demonstrate the exact unit working with an available device and you are comfortable owning unsupported hardware.
