ULTROS is a single-player psychedelic metroidvania built around repeating runs, plant-based progression, and close-range combat. Critics have praised its distinctiveness and satisfying action, while also noting that its ambitious ideas do not always reach their full potential. What is ULTROS?
Developed by Hadoque and published by Kepler Interactive, ULTROS takes place aboard the Sarcophagus, a drifting space setting that contains an ancient being. Its initial release was February 13, 2024, according to Steam. The official ULTROS site lists PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Epic Games Store, and Steam availability. The US Nintendo store gives the Switch release date as February 13, 2025; release timing therefore depends on platform and region.

How do the loop and progression work?
Rather than treating every return to a location as simple backtracking, ULTROS makes repeated runs part of its progression. The PlayStation Blog describes runs that uncover secrets and open abilities through a branching skill tree. New knowledge and abilities can change what routes and encounters are accessible on a later pass.
The central question for a prospective player is whether this structure makes revisiting places feel purposeful. The loop can reward observation and experimentation, but players who want a steadily forward, low-repetition journey may find returning through familiar spaces less appealing. The game’s design makes the loop a core feature, not a brief side mechanic.

What does gardening add?
Gardening is connected to progression, traversal, puzzles, and combat. Plants have distinct traits: they can help unlock skills, support puzzle-solving, and affect enemies. Planting also lets players alter parts of the environment across loops, so tending the world can influence what becomes possible later.
This system is most likely to appeal to players who enjoy experimenting with interconnected mechanics. When judging whether it works for you, consider whether planting and revisiting a changed environment sounds like satisfying preparation—or a detour from exploration and action.
How do combat and platforming fit in?
Combat is close-range and combo-driven. The official announcement emphasizes trying different combinations of attacks and using evasive movement against the Sarcophagus’s lifeforms. This gives encounters a more active, hands-on character than a progression system focused only on unlocking abilities.

Platforming and combat both serve the broader exploration loop: movement helps you navigate the world, while encounters test how you use the tools you have acquired. GameSpot’s Alessandro Barbosa described the platforming and combat as satisfying and said the game breaks from the genre’s traditional mold. That is one critic’s judgment, not a guarantee that the systems will suit every player.
Why is the presentation distinctive?
ULTROS leans into a psychedelic visual identity, with the alien setting and its plant life reinforcing the game’s unusual tone. Music is also a central part of that identity. The PlayStation Blog says the score draws on orchestral instruments and recordings from Peru and the Amazon region, linking its sound to the world’s organic and otherworldly qualities.
For the digital Steam Deluxe Edition, the store lists an artbook and original soundtrack as extras. Those are digital inclusions; they should not be assumed to come with a physical console edition.

What have critics said about ULTROS?
Critical reactions highlight ambition and a willingness to depart from familiar metroidvania patterns, while leaving room for reservations about how fully the ideas are developed.
- PC Gamer: Baxter Burchill rated the game 82 in a review published February 27, 2024, describing it as a bold metroidvania with ideas it does not always fully exploit.
- GameSpot: Alessandro Barbosa praised the satisfaction of its platforming and combat and its departure from the genre’s traditional mold.
These are individual reviews, not an aggregate score or a universal verdict. They point to a useful way to evaluate the game: its unusual systems and atmosphere are central strengths for some players, but the same experimentation may not make every part of the experience equally compelling.

Who is ULTROS for?
ULTROS is a stronger fit if you want a metroidvania that makes you reconsider how the world changes between runs, and if you enjoy combining exploration with gardening, puzzle-solving, and close combat. Its presentation may also appeal if you value a distinctive art direction and music that draws on a range of influences.

It is a less obvious fit if you dislike revisiting areas, prefer progression that is explained plainly and moves consistently forward, or want combat to be the game’s sole focus. The loop, gardening, and exploration are intertwined, so a player uninterested in those systems may miss much of what distinguishes the game.
Which edition and platforms should you check?
The official site lists PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Epic Games Store, and Steam versions. Check the store for your platform and region for current availability and edition details. Steam’s Deluxe Edition includes a digital artbook and original soundtrack. No physical edition’s format or contents should be inferred from that digital listing.
