ULX is Garry’s Mod’s group-based administration addon. It adds console commands, chat commands and a graphical menu for moderation, player management and server utilities. ULX depends on ULib, so both addons must be installed and the server must be fully restarted before commands are available.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Garry's Mod servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
This guide shows how to install ULX and ULib, discover the commands enabled on your server, open the menu, promote users safely, understand targeting and immunity, install the optional ULX Commands module, and diagnose commands that do not work.

ULX is an administration framework rather than a single command. It defines user groups, command permissions and immunity rules, then exposes those rules through the server console, player chat and a graphical interface. A command can therefore be available to one group, denied to another, or restricted by the target’s immunity level.
ULX’s command layer is built on ULib. ULib supplies the underlying administration library, while ULX provides the administration commands and interface. Installing ULX without the required ULib version is an incomplete installation and commonly results in missing commands or startup errors.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to think about a ULX command
Every command has five practical dimensions:
- Invocation: whether it is run from the server console, a player’s chat box or the ULX menu.
- Scope: whether it acts on one target, several targets, everyone, or a group.
- Authority: the executing user’s group, command access and immunity relative to the target.
- Effect: moderation, movement, communication, utility, visual changes or fun behavior.
- Persistence: whether it is a one-time action or changes a saved group or configuration.
Use those dimensions when deciding whether a command belongs in an administrator’s routine toolkit or should be reserved for the highest-trust operators.
Install ULX and ULib
The official ULX README states that the latest version of ULib is required. TeamUlysses documents these Workshop items:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Addon | Workshop ID | Role |
|---|---|---|
| ULX | 557962280 |
Administration commands, groups and menu |
| ULib | 557962238 |
Required library used by ULX |
Install both items on the server, not only on your personal client. A client-side subscription does not by itself place the addons in a dedicated server’s garrysmod/addons directory.
Workshop installation
- Open the server’s Workshop collection or Workshop installation workflow.
- Add ULX with Workshop ID
557962280. - Add ULib with Workshop ID
557962238. - Confirm that both addons are mounted for the server instance that will run them.
- Stop and start the server completely. Do not treat a map change as an installation restart.
Classic addons-directory installation
For a manual installation, extract the addon files under the server’s garrysmod/addons directory without adding an extra nesting level. The extracted structure should include paths such as garrysmod/addons/ulx/lua/ulib/modules/ulx_init.lua and garrysmod/addons/ulx/lua/ulx/modules/fun.lua. If those files are buried under a second folder, Garry’s Mod may not load the addon.
- Download the current ULX and ULib packages from the project’s official distribution channel.
- Extract each package into the server’s
garrysmod/addonsdirectory. - Check that the ULX Lua files are directly beneath the expected addon path.
- Start the server again from a full stop.
The project’s installation instructions are emphatic about the final step: a full server restart is required after copying the files; a simple map change is not sufficient.
Installation checks
- Both ULX and ULib are present on the server.
- The server log shows the addons loading without Lua errors.
- You can enter
ulx helpin the server console and receive a command listing. - An authorized player can open the administration interface with
ulx menu.
ULX command syntax and discovery
ULX supports the same command system through three entry points. The syntax is deliberately short:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Where | Syntax | Example | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Server console | ulx help |
ulx help |
Lists available ULX commands and help text. |
| Server console | ulx menu |
ulx menu |
Opens the ULX graphical administration menu for an authorized user. |
| Server console | ulx command arguments |
ulx adduser <user> <group> |
Runs a command with its arguments. |
| Player chat | !command arguments |
!help |
Runs a chat command when the player has access and the command is enabled. |
In the console, ULX commands are preceded by ulx . In chat, use the exclamation form and omit the ulx prefix. The exact target selectors and argument order are command-specific, so use ulx help and the command’s help entry before applying it to players.

Bind the menu to a key
The ULX README recommends binding ulx menu to a key. Create a client key binding that sends the console command ulx menu; the exact key is a personal preference. The binding does not grant permission. The server still checks the connected user’s group before opening administrative controls.
Make a player an administrator
ULX offers a graphical workflow and a console command. Use the GUI when you want to see connected players and groups; use the console when you are scripting or working without the menu.
Groups tab workflow
- Run
ulx menufrom the server console or open your existing key binding. - Open the Groups tab.
- Select the group that should receive the player.
- Choose the connected player and add them to that group.
- Verify the resulting group and command access before asking the user to moderate a live session.
The group assignment is different from a one-off moderation action: it changes the user’s saved authority and can affect later connections, depending on the server’s user data.

Use:
ulx adduser <user> <group>
Replace <user> with the player identifier accepted by your ULX installation and <group> with the destination group. Run the command from the server console or through an administrator interface that is authorized to execute it. If the command rejects the target, use the Groups tab to select the connected player and confirm the exact group name.
File-based fallback
The ULX README identifies data/lib/users.txt as a file-based fallback for user assignments. Treat direct file editing as an administrative recovery method rather than the normal workflow: stop the server before editing, preserve a backup, and make only one controlled change at a time. A malformed users file can prevent expected groups from loading.
Groups, superadmin authority and immunity
ULX uses groups to determine which commands a user can run. A group can be granted or denied access to individual commands, allowing a server owner to create an intermediate moderator role instead of giving every operator unrestricted power.
What superadmin means
Superadmin is ULX’s highest usergroup. According to the official project description, superadmins can use all commands, override other users’ immunity, view log messages hidden from other players, and grant or revoke command access with userallow and userdeny.

Because superadmin can change the permission model itself, assign it only to people who can be trusted with the entire server. A person who can run a moderation command is not automatically a person who should be able to grant that command to someone else.
Immunity in practice
Immunity prevents a lower-authority operator from targeting a protected user. When a command fails against another administrator, check both users’ groups and immunity levels before assuming the command syntax is wrong. Superadmins can override other users’ immunity; ordinary groups should not be expected to do so.
Granting and revoking command access
The userallow and userdeny controls are permission-management tools, not ordinary moderation commands. Use them to adjust access deliberately, record who made the change, and test the affected group with a harmless command. A permission change is persistent configuration, whereas a kick, mute or movement command is normally a one-off action.
Targeting: avoid affecting the wrong players
Target arguments are the part of ULX commands most likely to cause an operational mistake. A target can represent one player, several players, everyone on the server or another selector supported by the command. The command reference and in-game help define which selectors are accepted for that command.
- Start with one named player when testing an unfamiliar command.
- Read the command’s help entry before using a broad selector.
- Confirm the target list shown by the menu or command feedback.
- Check immunity before attempting to affect another administrator.
- Use an intentionally narrow scope for irreversible or disruptive actions.
Do not assume that a target form accepted by one ULX command is valid for every other command. Some commands take a player target, some take a URL or IP address, and some take no target at all.
Core ULX commands you should know
The complete command set depends on the ULX version, enabled modules and permissions. Rather than relying on a copied list that may be stale, run ulx help on the actual server. These are the core entry points and account-management commands documented by the project:
| Command | Where to run it | Purpose | Persistence or risk |
|---|---|---|---|
ulx help |
Console | Discover commands and their help text. | Read-only. |
ulx menu |
Console or a bound key | Open the graphical administration menu. | Read-only until an action is selected. |
ulx adduser <user> <group> |
Console | Add a user to a ULX group. | Saved permission change. |
userallow |
ULX permission interface or command workflow | Allow a user or group to use a command. | Saved permission change; restrict to trusted operators. |
userdeny |
ULX permission interface or command workflow | Deny a user or group access to a command. | Saved permission change; verify that you do not remove your own recovery access. |
Commands not shown in this small table may be supplied by ULX’s standard modules or by third-party modules. The server’s own help output is authoritative for what is installed and enabled.

Install the supplemental ULX Commands module
Timmy’s ULX Commands is an optional module that adds RCON, utility, chat and fun commands. It still requires the latest ULib and ULX; it does not replace either dependency.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Workshop method
- Install the supplemental ULX Commands item through Workshop on the same server that runs ULX and ULib.
- Confirm that the module is mounted with the server’s addons.
- Restart the server fully.
- Run
ulx helpand check that the new command names appear.
Legacy addons method
The module’s README documents a legacy addons/ulx-commands path. If you install that package manually, place the folder directly under garrysmod/addons, check for an accidental extra directory level, and perform a full restart before testing.
Because this module exposes URL execution and RCON-like behavior, do not grant its commands broadly by default. Keep them limited to a group whose members understand the consequences of running remote code or changing server-wide state.
Supplemental command reference
The following syntax is taken from the module’s documented command list. Angle-bracket values are placeholders; substitute the target, URL, IP address or other argument required by your server. Use ulx help to confirm that the module is loaded and to see the permission assigned to each command.
RCON and URL execution
| Command | Argument form | Operational meaning | Safety note |
|---|---|---|---|
ulx crunurl |
<players> <script URL> |
Runs a script URL in the context of selected players. | High impact; restrict to trusted groups and verify the URL before execution. |
ulx runurl |
<script URL> |
Runs a script URL without a player target argument. | High impact; treat the URL as executable code. |

Open the menu and inspect access
- Connect with the account that should administer the server.
- Run
ulx menu. - Open the Groups or command-access area.
- Check which group is assigned to your account and which commands that group can use.
- Run a harmless discovery command before attempting a player-affecting action.
Promote a trusted moderator
- Decide the minimum group and command set required for the role.
- Use the Groups tab to assign the connected player, or run
ulx adduser <user> <group>. - Confirm the assignment with the menu or the server’s user data.
- Test one permitted command and one intentionally restricted command so the boundary is clear.
- Do not grant superadmin merely to solve a single missing permission; use command-specific access instead.
Run a command safely for several players
- Read the command help and identify the accepted target syntax.
- Select a single test player first.
- Verify the result and any player-facing feedback.
- Expand to the intended group or broader target only after the narrow test succeeds.
- For URL, IP or server-wide commands, re-check the argument before pressing enter.

1. Confirm the command form
Chat uses !command arguments, not ulx command arguments. The latter belongs in the console. Check spelling, punctuation and the required arguments shown by ulx help.
2. Test from the server console
Run the equivalent console form, such as ulx help or another harmless command. If the console cannot find the command, the problem is loading or installation rather than chat input.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →3. Check that ULib and ULX loaded together
Review the startup log for missing files or Lua errors. Verify that both Workshop items or both addon directories belong to the same server instance. If the files were just installed, confirm that the server was fully stopped and started.
4. Check group access and immunity
A command can be installed yet unavailable to your group. Use the menu’s group and command-access views, or have a superadmin inspect the assignment. If the command works on ordinary players but not another administrator, immunity is the likely explanation.
5. Check the target and arguments
Many failures are invalid target syntax, a missing required value or a target that is not connected. Start with one connected player and use the exact argument order displayed in the help entry.
6. Check chat integration
If console commands work but no chat command responds, test in the server’s normal chat channel and check other chat or role-play addons for command interception. A chat addon can alter how prefixes are handled without changing ULX’s console behavior.

Security and administration practices
- Keep superadmin membership short and auditable.
- Use a separate moderator group with only the commands needed for routine work.
- Protect
userallowanduserdenyfrom broad access. - Restrict
runurlandcrunurlto operators who can validate remote code. - Treat
banip, redirects and server-wide messages as consequential actions, not casual utilities. - Test fun and movement commands with a narrow target before applying them to a group.
- Keep a backup of user data before making large group or permission changes.
- Record who received elevated access and remove temporary access when the event or staffing need ends.
Using the official documentation
The official ULX documentation repository is organized into separate pages for installation, configuration, backup and restore, reset procedures, targeting, tips and tricks, third-party modules, user management and the complete ulx-commands.md reference. Use those pages when you need an exact argument form, a target selector, a reset procedure or a module-specific permission rather than relying on a generic command list.
The command list on your own server remains the final check because modules, versions and group permissions can differ. Run ulx help, compare the returned syntax with the documentation, and test changes on a controlled server before applying them to a populated community server.
