Before your first career in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, focus on learning how training, support cards, energy, skills, and race goals work together. You do not need a perfect roster: make choices around your trainee’s aptitudes and objectives, then check condition and running style before each race.
What should I do first?
Think of a career as a series of limited choices: you train, manage your trainee’s condition, respond to support events, learn skills, and enter races on the way toward the scenario’s finale. A six-card support deck is part of that loop, but the exact options and balance can depend on the scenario and game version. An independent beginner guide outlines this career structure; use it as a mental model rather than a universal turn-by-turn plan.
- Read your trainee’s aptitudes and career goals before choosing training or optional races.
- Choose training with both the trainee and the current run in mind.
- Watch energy and motivation; do not keep pushing hard training when the trainee is depleted.
- Use skill hints and select skills that fit the races and running approach you expect.
- Before each race, check condition and running style, then choose a suitable strategy.
Which stats should I train?
There is no single stat priority that fits every trainee and race. Start with the trainee’s aptitude and scheduled goals, then consider the demands of the race you are preparing for. Cygames’ official game-system overview emphasizes suitable training, race condition, and running style; it does not establish one universal stat build for beginners.
Training choices also compete with rest and other career actions for turns. Treat each choice as a trade-off: improve what helps meet the next goal, while avoiding a plan that leaves the trainee unable to perform. Race results can grow your fan count and help open access to larger races, so optional races should support the run rather than distract from its requirements.

How do support cards affect a career?
Support cards contribute training effects, events, and access to skills. Their placement around training choices can make one option more attractive than another. PC Gamer’s beginner guide recommends building support friendship early because it can unlock stronger friendship training. That is a useful principle, not a rule that every turn should be spent on the same training: the best choice still depends on energy, goals, and the cards available in your deck.
Be cautious with “best deck” lists, card rankings, and specific pull recommendations. They depend on roster, race distance, scenario, and balance changes, so a list published for one release period may not describe the best choice now.

When should I rest or go on an outing?
Energy and condition affect how safely and effectively you can continue training. PC Gamer’s 2025 guide warns that training at low energy can risk failure and that rest uses a turn. Cygames also says outings can refresh a trainee when motivation falls. If energy is low or motivation is hurting the run, weigh the cost of spending a turn on recovery against the risk of continuing depleted.
How should I choose skills?
Marked training can offer skill hints, according to Cygames. When choosing what to learn, look for skills that fit the trainee’s running style and the races ahead rather than selecting skills only because they are available. For example, position-related skills should make sense for the way the trainee is expected to run; stamina recovery may be relevant when preparing for a long race. The right pick depends on the trainee, distance, running style, and current skill tuning.

What should I check before a race?
Use the race preparation screen to consider condition and running style, then select a strategy that fits the situation. Cygames explicitly identifies these as factors to consider before a race. Keep the trainee’s aptitude and career goals in view, too: a race is not automatically worthwhile just because it offers a chance to gain fans.

A July 2026 independent guide recommends URA Finale as an introductory scenario. That is a dated recommendation, not a confirmed statement about current availability or regional balance. Check the scenarios available in your game and choose one whose goals you can follow while learning the career loop; avoid treating any older scenario or card tier list as timeless advice.

The PC version on Steam is listed as free to play and includes in-app purchases. Steam’s listing confirms those terms. The beginner guidance here concerns in-game training and race decisions; no particular accessory or physical item is established as necessary to begin.
