Umbraclaw Reviews: Is This Afterlife Platformer Worth Playing?

Umbraclaw is a distinctive but uneven 2D action-platformer: critics recognized its visual appeal and unusual death-powered progression, while criticizing its difficulty and save friction. It is most likely to appeal to players who enjoy demanding platformers and can accept some rough edges.

What do the reviews say about Umbraclaw?

Critics are divided on how well the game’s ideas come together. Metacritic lists Umbraclaw at 68/100 from four critic reviews, with all four categorized as Mixed or Average. The small review sample makes that score a useful snapshot, not a definitive verdict. Metacritic’s review listing includes TouchArcade’s observation that the game is “trying some things outside of the developer’s usual wheelhouse,” and calls it “a nice-looking game that is very playable.” The same assessment questions whether its progression feels roguelite or linear and criticizes how it handles difficulty.

Other reviews point to similar trade-offs. The Nintendo Switch review page lists Siliconera at 70, praising the death-based growth idea as refreshing but warning that demanding design choices can make the experience harder to savor. Hey Poor Player’s listed 70-point review calls out frustrating save functionality and difficulty that can feel inconsistent or overwhelming. These assessments suggest that the central question is less whether the concept is appealing than whether its challenge and progression suit you. (Metacritic’s Nintendo Switch critic reviews)

What is Umbraclaw about, and how does Anima Revive work?

You play as Kuon, a house cat who dies in the mortal world and wakes in the afterlife realm called the Soulplane. Her goal is to challenge the underworld and return to her owner. Steam’s game listing describes that premise, while Metacritic’s game details identify Anima Revive as the system that grants Kuon abilities drawn from various animals.

Umbraclaw Korean Edition [English Supports] for Nintendo Switch
  • This is Korean Version released by SIEK. Region free title so you can play it on your system.
  • Korean Edition supports Multi language Subtitles: English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, German
  • Umbraclaw tells the story of Kuon, a house cat who has died in the mortal world after she awakens in the Soulplane, a realm of the dead. She must challenge the perilous underworld to return home to her owner in this 2D action adventure.

That death-and-growth idea is the game’s defining hook: failure is part of the conversation around progression, rather than simply a reset between platforming challenges. The appeal depends on whether you find that kind of experimentation motivating. It does not, by itself, resolve reviewers’ concerns about the balance of difficulty or the friction of saving.

How hard is Umbraclaw?

Expect a challenging platformer, with the important caveat that critics did not describe the difficulty as consistently tuned. The Nintendo Switch reviews include criticism of demanding choices and difficulty that can become overwhelming. That makes Umbraclaw a better fit for players who are comfortable retrying difficult sections than for anyone seeking a relaxed, forgiving platform game.

Save functionality is another point to weigh. Hey Poor Player’s listed review specifically criticizes frustrating saving, so players who dislike losing progress or dealing with checkpoint friction should take that warning seriously. The available review evidence does not establish a single difficulty setting or a specific checkpoint layout, so it is safer to treat these as review concerns than to assume every player will encounter the same degree of frustration.

Is Umbraclaw worth buying?

Consider it if you want a moody afterlife premise, a visually distinctive 2D platformer, and an animal-ability system tied to repeated attempts. Reviews recognize that the game is playable and that its central idea is refreshing, even as they disagree with parts of its execution.

Think twice if uneven challenge, awkward saving, or a less gripping story would spoil the experience for you. The cited reviews include reservations about narrative engagement as well as difficulty and progression. Steam’s captured listing showed 86% positive user reviews from 130 reviews, but that is a time-sensitive snapshot; user-review totals and percentages can change. It differs from the critic aggregate, and neither figure guarantees how the game will land for an individual player. (Steam user reviews)
