You may see messages such as “umbrapvs32.dll was not found,” “The code execution cannot proceed because umbrapvs32.dll was not found,” or “umbrapvs32.dll could not be loaded.” The same problem may appear as “The program can’t start because umbrapvs32.dll is missing from your computer.”
The 60-second answer
umbrapvs32.dll appears to be a legacy 32-bit component associated with the Unity Editor. The safest fix is to identify the Unity Editor version that the error is trying to launch, then repair or reinstall that exact version through Unity Hub.
Do not download a loose copy into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. That can provide the wrong build, wrong architecture, or an unsafe file while leaving the damaged Unity installation untouched.
What causes the error
The most likely causes are:
- A damaged or incomplete Unity Editor installation.
- A shortcut or project launching a different Unity version from the one you repaired.
- Antivirus software quarantining or deleting the file.
- An interrupted update, disk problem, or cleanup utility removing part of the installation.
- A missing dependency of the DLL rather than the DLL itself.
- Broader Windows corruption, which is less likely for this application file.
Public file-index data associates umbrapvs32.dll with the Unity Editor and reports it as 32-bit. That identification is not an official Unity file manifest, and no specific Unity release is reliably established. The file should normally be beside the application that loads it, inside the relevant Unity Editor directory, not in a Windows system folder.

Fix 1: Identify the program and Unity version
Before changing anything, confirm which executable is producing the message.
Check the error dialog
Read the application name in the title bar and note any Unity version shown in the message, shortcut, or launcher. If the dialog offers a path, copy it down.
Check the shortcut target
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the complete path, including the folder and version number.
- Select Cancel without changing the shortcut.
Typical Unity installations may be under:
C:Program FilesUnityHubEditor
C:Program FilesUnityEditor
C:Program FilesUnity<version>Editor
If a game, launcher, plugin, or development tool shows the error instead of Unity Editor, record that program’s full path. Do not assume every program requesting this filename uses the same Unity installation.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected Unity Editor
This is the most likely working solution.
- Open Unity Hub from the Start menu.
- Select Installs in the left panel.
- Find the Editor version that matches the error or shortcut target.
- Open that version’s options menu.
- Choose the available option for modifying components, adding modules, or managing the installation.
- Apply the repair or component change if Unity Hub offers one.
- If repair is unavailable or fails, use the version’s options menu and select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Unity Hub again.
- Install the same Editor release that the project or shortcut expects.
- Reopen the project and test it.
Back up your project before uninstalling an Editor. Removing an Editor version does not normally mean deleting your project, but confirming your project is backed up prevents an avoidable loss.

If several Unity versions are installed, repair the one named by the failing executable. Repairing one version does not replace missing files in another. A project can also open with one Editor version while a desktop shortcut launches a different one.
If Unity Hub cannot complete the installation, download the matching release from Unity’s official Editor archive rather than using a third-party DLL page.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if the same shortcut or project opens without the DLL message. If the message changes to a different missing file, the Unity installation may still be incomplete, or the named DLL may be loading a dependency that is missing.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove an application DLL after an update or scan.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for the Unity Editor folder or
umbrapvs32.dll. - Open a matching entry and read its file path and action.
- If the file is clearly from your legitimate Unity installation, verify the installation source before considering Restore.
- Run a fresh scan after restoring it.
- If Windows Security quarantines it again, do not repeatedly restore the file. Remove the incomplete installation and reinstall Unity from its official installer.
Microsoft explains Protection History and quarantine actions in its Windows Security Protection History guidance.
A copy found in System32, a temporary folder, or an unrelated download directory deserves extra scrutiny. Do not treat a download page’s claim that a file is safe as proof that it is legitimate.
Fix 4: Check whether a dependency is missing
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a library that umbrapvs32.dll depends on.

First, reinstall the affected Unity Editor as described above. That restores the complete application folder and its dependencies together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the error continues:
- Write down the complete executable path from the shortcut or error.
- Note the Unity version and whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check Windows Security Protection history again.
- Review recent Unity updates, disk cleanup activity, or disk errors.
- Test a new or different Unity project if possible.
- If only one project fails, the project or one of its packages may be involved.
- If every project fails with the same Editor, reinstall that Editor version again.
Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit application directory merely because Windows itself is 64-bit. The DLL architecture must match the application that loads it.
Fix 5: Do not register this DLL with Regsvr32
regsvr32 is used for certain COM and ActiveX libraries that provide a registration entry point. A missing Unity application DLL is not automatically one of those files.
Do not use commands such as these as a general repair:
regsvr32 umbrapvs32.dll
Registration will not rebuild a damaged Unity installation and may produce another error about an invalid entry point. Repair the parent application instead.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 6: Run DISM and System File Checker only for wider Windows problems
DISM and SFC repair Windows components and protected system files. They are not normal repair tools for a Unity-owned application DLL.
Use them when Windows also shows symptoms such as damaged built-in apps, repeated system-file errors, failed Windows features, or other unrelated corruption.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Unity again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker instructions.
Running these commands repeatedly will not reliably restore a missing Unity file. If Windows reports that it repaired files but Unity still fails, return to the Unity Hub reinstall step.

When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating DISM or SFC without knowing what changed becomes time-consuming, Outbyte PC Repair can scan to show what it finds; repairs are performed by the full version. Reinstalling the affected Unity Editor remains the definitive fix when this specific application file is missing.

A graphics or storage driver is not the usual cause of a missing Unity DLL. Consider a driver update only if Unity also crashes, shows rendering problems, or Windows reports a device error.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters and inspect the graphics device.
- Expand Storage controllers and Disk drives if the installation or project is on a problematic drive.
- Right-click the relevant device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test Unity again.
You can also open Windows Update, select Advanced options, then Optional updates and review available driver updates. Install only drivers that match your hardware.

A loose download may be:
- The wrong Unity build.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Missing its own dependencies.
- Modified or bundled with malware.
- From an unrelated program using the same filename.
It can also make the error appear to move from one folder to another without repairing the parent installation. Never place an unknown DLL in System32, SysWOW64, the Unity folder, or the application folder just to silence the message.
Use Unity Hub or Unity’s official installer and archive for the Editor. Use Microsoft’s own instructions for Windows repair commands and security history.
If the error remains after reinstalling
Collect these details before seeking further support:
- The exact error text.
- The full path of the executable that launches.
- The Unity Editor version.
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The folder where
umbrapvs32.dllis expected. - Any Windows Security quarantine event.
- Whether a new Unity project opens.
- Whether another Unity Editor version works.
- Any additional missing-DLL or dependency message.
If the file returns to quarantine, stop restoring it repeatedly. If a clean official reinstall still fails, the problem may be another missing dependency, a damaged project or tool installation, or a storage issue.

Is umbrapvs32.dll a Windows system file?
There is no reliable evidence that it is a Windows component. It is associated with Unity Editor files and should not normally be placed in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Is umbrapvs32.dll 32-bit?
Public file-index data reports a 32-bit file, but Unity does not publicly confirm every reported file detail. Match the file to the application that loads it rather than to the bitness of Windows.
Which Unity version includes it?
No specific Unity release is reliably verified. Use the version named by the error, project settings, shortcut target, or Unity Hub.
Can I restore it from antivirus quarantine?
Only consider restoration when the file is clearly from a legitimate Unity installation and its origin is verified. If it is quarantined again, reinstall Unity instead of repeatedly restoring it.
Recommended Free Tools
Will SFC restore the file?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files. A missing Unity file should be restored by repairing or reinstalling the affected Unity Editor.
Does System Restore help?
System Restore may reverse a recent application change or deletion, but it rolls back broader system state. It is a fallback, not a substitute for a clean Unity installation.
