Start with this quick diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, record:
- The exact program or game showing the error.
- The complete message, such as “umpo.dll is missing,” “could not be loaded,” or “not designed to run on Windows.”
- Whether the problem affects Windows itself or only one application.
- Whether the error began after Windows Update, a crash, disk cleanup, or an antivirus scan.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit. Check Settings > System > About > System type.

umpo.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file. It provides part of the User-Mode Power Service, which gives Windows and applications access to power-management and power-metering functions. It is not a general game runtime or a DLL that should be downloaded separately.
The normal location is:
%SystemRoot%System32umpo.dll
On 64-bit Windows, Windows uses WOW64 redirection for 32-bit applications. Do not assume that copying a 32-bit file into System32 or adding another copy to SysWOW64 will repair the problem. Windows servicing should restore the correct architecture and build.

Fix 1: Repair the application that reports the error
If only one older application or game reports umpo.dll, the application may be requesting the file incorrectly, using a damaged private copy, or failing because its installation is incomplete.
Use the program’s repair option
- Close the affected program.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If the program came from a launcher, use its repair function instead:
#1 Best Overall
- Look for Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, or Scan and repair.
- Allow the scan to finish.
- Restart the launcher and test the program.
If repair does not help, uninstall the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or store. Do not copy umpo.dll into the program folder unless the developer specifically documents that arrangement.
The repair worked if the application starts without the same error and no new DLL message appears. If Windows or several applications report the file, continue with the system repairs below rather than repeatedly reinstalling one program.
Fix 2: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete update can leave Windows system components inconsistent.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart even if Windows does not require an immediate restart.
- Test the affected program.
If Windows Update reports an installation failure, restart once more and check again. Persistent servicing errors should be repaired before attempting to replace any DLL manually.
Fix 3: Run DISM, then System File Checker
Microsoft recommends using Deployment Image Servicing and Management, or DISM, before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a repair source.
Open an administrator Command Prompt
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish.
Understand the result
- DISM completed successfully means the component store repair completed.
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations means SFC found no damaged protected files.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them means the repair found and replaced damaged files.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them means further repair is needed.
Test the original program after restarting. If the error remains, run SFC one more time after DISM has completed, then review the CBS log or continue to the repair-source step.
If you prefer not to repeatedly compare Windows component versions and interpret SFC/DISM output manually, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying issues and show what needs attention. Its free scan identifies problems, while repair actions require the full version, and it is optional rather than a substitute for Microsoft’s built-in repair path.
If DISM says source files cannot be found
DISM may need a matching Windows installation source.
Use a Windows installation image that matches the installed edition, language, and architecture. Microsoft’s repair-image guidance explains how to provide a source with /Source and prevent DISM from contacting Windows Update with /LimitAccess.
Do not guess at a source path or use an image from a different Windows edition. A mismatched source can leave the component store in an inconsistent state.
Fix 4: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Windows Security may remove a file after a detection, including a false positive. Do not assume that every detection naming umpo.dll is malware, but do not restore every detected file either.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Windows Security from Start.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection involving
umpo.dll. - Review the detected path, threat name, and action.
- Check whether the path was the legitimate Windows directory.
- Confirm the file’s signature before considering restoration.
Restore a quarantined file only when it is confirmed to be the Microsoft system file and the detection is a false positive. Do not disable antivirus or create a broad exclusion just to make the application start.
If the file was removed from the Windows directory, repair Windows with DISM and SFC after handling the detection. If the alert identifies an unusual application folder, treat that copy separately and scan the system. Malware can use a legitimate filename outside the Windows directory.

Fix 5: Check the path, signature, and file metadata
These checks are read-only and help distinguish a missing system component from a wrong private copy.
Open Command Prompt and run:
where umpo.dll
dir "%windir%System32umpo.dll"
The expected Windows copy should be under the Windows system directory. A result in a temporary folder, download folder, or unfamiliar writable application directory deserves further investigation.
You can inspect metadata with PowerShell:
Get-Item "$env:windirSystem32umpo.dll" |
Select-Object FullName,Length,VersionInfo
You can also:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Inspect the signer details.
- Confirm that the signature identifies Microsoft Windows or Microsoft Corporation and is valid.
Do not use an old version number as a universal replacement target. A Windows 7-era record such as 6.1.7601.17514 is historical metadata, not the correct file for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 build. File versions vary with Windows releases and servicing.
Fix 6: Remove unsafe manual replacements
If someone copied umpo.dll from another computer or from a DLL download page, the replacement may have the wrong architecture, build, signature, or dependencies. A wrong file can cause messages such as:
- “The specified module could not be found”
- “The application was unable to start correctly”
- “The file is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
Do not download an isolated DLL from a random DLL website. Such files may contain malware, may be the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit version, and often leave the damaged component store or application installation untouched.
Do not copy files into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory as a general repair method. If you can identify a manually copied replacement, remove it only according to the application’s uninstall or repair process, then run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
The safe source is Windows itself through Windows Update, DISM, SFC, an appropriately matched Microsoft repair source, System Restore, or an in-place Windows repair.
Fix 7: Do not register umpo.dll with regsvr32
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose a COM registration entry point, commonly DllRegisterServer. umpo.dll is a Windows power-service component, not a Microsoft-documented COM or ActiveX DLL that should be registered manually.
Running:
regsvr32 umpo.dll
is unlikely to repair a missing or corrupt system component. It may instead produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. Use DISM and SFC for this file.
Fix 8: Repair drivers only when the symptoms point to them
A power-management error that began immediately after a chipset, graphics, battery, or power-management driver change may involve more than the DLL itself. Do not replace umpo.dll to compensate for a driver problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck Windows’ driver state:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Batteries, System devices, and relevant display or chipset categories.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver or roll back the recently changed driver when that option is available.
Install drivers from Windows Update or the computer or motherboard manufacturer. Avoid driver packages that do not match the device and Windows architecture.
If manually checking many device models and driver versions is the part slowing you down, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers. Its free scan shows the detected issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional; it is not required to repair umpo.dll.
Fix 9: Use System Restore or an in-place repair
If the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, or system change:
Best Value
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Complete the restore and restart.
System Restore is a recovery option, not a replacement for DISM and SFC.

Back up important files first. An in-place repair reinstalls Windows system components while normally preserving personal files and installed applications, but you should still prepare for recovery before starting.
If the machine has disk errors, unexpected shutdowns, or repeated corruption, back up data and investigate drive health. chkdsk may be appropriate when there is evidence of filesystem damage, but it does not replace DISM and SFC.
Frequently asked questions
Is umpo.dll legitimate?
Yes. umpo.dll is associated with Microsoft’s User-Mode Power Service. Its normal Windows location is %SystemRoot%System32. Verify the path and digital signature rather than trusting a filename alone.
Which Windows versions contain it?
Microsoft documents the User-Mode Power Service beginning with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. The exact file version depends on the Windows release and servicing level. Do not use an old version as a universal replacement.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is umpo.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The correct architecture depends on the Windows component and application involved. On 64-bit Windows, native system components and 32-bit application access are handled through Windows’ WOW64 rules. Do not install both copies “just in case.”
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this file by itself. Those packages are not identified as the source of umpo.dll. Install or repair them only when the exact application error names a dependency from one of those products.
What information should I provide if the error continues?
Record the Windows version and build, exact error text, full path shown in the message, output from the file checks, any Event Viewer entry, and whether the problem began after an update, driver change, crash, or security scan. Also state whether every application fails or only one program does.
