The first three adventures are sold separately as Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. So the key difference is both which games you get and which release generation you’re playing: Legacy of Thieves updates the two newer adventures for PS5 and PC, while it does not remake or include the first three games.
There are two possible meanings of “original games” in this comparison: the first three Uncharted titles, or the original releases of Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy. This guide separates those questions so you can identify the right collection, understand what the newer edition changes, and check relevant platform and upgrade details before buying.

Which games are included?
The title can be confusing because “original games” might mean either the first three Uncharted adventures or the original PS4 versions of the two games in Legacy of Thieves. The collection is an updated release of the latter pair:

That distinction matters when choosing a starting point or checking a store listing: Legacy of Thieves is not a complete-series bundle. It packages two later adventures with updated features for PS5 and PC. The Nathan Drake Collection is the separate release for the first three games.
Put simply, the collections divide the series into two groups. The Nathan Drake Collection is the package to look for when you mean the original three adventures. Legacy of Thieves is the package to look for when you mean the two newer games. Buying one does not, on the evidence of the listed contents, give you the other collection’s games. If you are searching a digital storefront or looking for a physical copy, verify the exact product name rather than relying on the word “collection” alone.
The phrase “original releases” can also refer to the PS4 editions of A Thief’s End and The Lost Legacy. Legacy of Thieves updates that pair for newer platforms; it is not a remake of the older trilogy. It is therefore more accurate to compare the collection with the original editions of its two included games when discussing its presentation features, and to compare its contents with the Nathan Drake Collection when discussing the series’ first three games.

A Thief’s End continues Nathan Drake’s story, while The Lost Legacy puts Chloe Frazer in the lead. Sony describes both games in Legacy of Thieves as standalone adventures, so newcomers do not need to play the entire series to follow them. There is continuity, though: players familiar with Drake’s earlier adventures may recognize more of the context in A Thief’s End.
The first three games follow Nathan through earlier adventures. If you want the story from its beginning, look for The Nathan Drake Collection and then consider playing A Thief’s End. If you mainly want the two games in Legacy of Thieves, Sony’s guidance is that you can start with either adventure without completing the rest of the series first.
This makes the choice partly about how much backstory you want, rather than a strict requirement to buy every game. Sony’s FAQ answer is that players do not need to play the entire series first: each game is intended to stand on its own. At the same time, Sony acknowledges continuity across the series. Those two points can both be true. A newcomer can follow the two adventures, while someone who has played the earlier games may bring more context to Nathan’s ongoing story in A Thief’s End.
If you are deciding between starting with the first three or moving directly to Legacy of Thieves, use your preferred experience as the guide. The earlier trilogy gives you Nathan Drake’s adventures in the separate collection; the later package gives you A Thief’s End and Chloe Frazer’s The Lost Legacy. The available official guidance does not say that the trilogy is mandatory preparation for either game in Legacy of Thieves.
What changes on PS5?
Legacy of Thieves adds PS5-specific presentation and controller features to its two games. Sony lists three display modes, with publisher-stated targets and conditions:
Rank #2
- DualSense Wireless Controller Features: Feel the action unfold with the DualSense wireless controller's haptic feedback through punches, vaults, and vehicular traversal. Experience the tension in rope swings via dynamic adaptive triggers.
- Fast Loading: Jump back into the adventure quickly with the PS5 console's Ultra-High Speed SSD and near-instant load times.
- 3D Audio: Hear the world of UNCHARTED: Legacy of Thieves Collection come to life around you with 3D Audio.
- Fidelity Mode: Play in a super sharp native 4K resolution with a 30fps target framerate.
- Performance Mode: Play with a smooth 60fps target framerate. 4K-TV players will experience a 4K resolution upscaled from a 1440p base resolution. 1080p HD-TV players will experience a 1080p resolution supersampled from a 1440p base with improved anti-aliasing..Performance+ Mode: Play with a high impact 120fps target framerate and a 1080p resolution.
| Mode | Publisher-stated target | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Fidelity | Native 4K at a 30 fps target | Prioritizes the stated resolution target. |
| Performance | 60 fps target | Sony describes 1440p-based output scaling or supersampling for supported displays. |
| Performance+ | 120 fps target at 1080p | Requires a compatible 120 Hz display. |
These are Sony’s specifications, not independent measurements or a promise that every scene will hold a particular frame rate. The original PS3 releases did not have this PS5 implementation. Sony also lists DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, fast loading using the PS5 SSD, and 3D Audio as PS5 features.
The modes describe different output priorities, so the choice is about your display and preference, not a separate game version. Fidelity is the stated native-4K, 30-fps-target option. Performance targets 60 fps and uses the 1440p-based scaling or supersampling approach Sony describes for supported displays. Performance+ has the higher stated frame-rate target, 120 fps, at 1080p; it depends on a compatible 120 Hz display. If your display does not support 120 Hz, that specific condition is not met. Sony’s mode descriptions should be treated as targets and requirements, not as a promise that every display or scene will produce identical results.
There are other PS5 differences beyond the display modes. Sony lists haptic feedback and adaptive triggers on the DualSense controller, fast loading through the PS5 SSD, and 3D Audio. These are features of the PS5 version of the collection; they should not be attributed to the original PS3 releases. The official feature information does not provide a separate measured loading-time figure or a guarantee of a specific audio setup, so it is best to describe these as publisher-listed features rather than quantified performance results.
For a buyer comparing a PS4 copy of one of these games with Legacy of Thieves on PS5, the useful distinction is that the latter is the PS5 collection version with the listed modes and features. Do not assume the older release itself has the same PS5 implementation simply because the underlying game is also available in an earlier version.
What does the PC version add?
The PC edition offers options aimed at different hardware and control setups, rather than adding the original trilogy. Sony’s PC feature page lists:
- Adjustable graphics options, including texture and model quality.
- 4K and ultrawide monitor support on compatible hardware.
- Keyboard and mouse, a range of gamepads, and control remapping.
- AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2 (FSR 2).
- DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers when the controller is connected by wire.
PC players should treat resolution and ultrawide support as dependent on compatible hardware and display setup. The feature list establishes available options; it does not mean every PC can run the game at 4K or use every feature. A controller is optional because keyboard and mouse are supported.
The PC options are practical differences in how you can configure the two included games. Adjustable graphics settings let players change options such as texture and model quality. Ultrawide and 4K support apply when the hardware and display setup are compatible; they are not universal performance guarantees. FSR 2 is listed as a supported graphics feature, but Sony’s feature page does not make that an assurance of a particular frame rate on every machine.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteControl choice is flexible: Sony lists keyboard and mouse, support for a range of gamepads, and remapping. That means players can choose input devices and adjust control assignments rather than being limited to one listed control scheme. DualSense features have an extra condition on PC: haptics and adaptive triggers require a wired controller connection according to Sony. Do not assume that wireless DualSense use on PC provides those two features.

- UNCHARTED: Legacy of Thieves Collection for PlayStation 5 New Video Game
When Sony explained why it selected these games for the PC launch, it said the first three PS3 titles remained narratively durable but would require a major visual overhaul to meet modern PC expectations. Sony chose the newer A Thief’s End and The Lost Legacy as the PC introduction. That is the publisher’s stated rationale, not an independent assessment that the older games are obsolete.
The selection rationale also helps explain why the PC collection’s name should not be read as a promise of a full franchise port. Sony’s October 19, 2022 PlayStation Blog post describes the decision to bring the newer pair to PC, while noting its view that the first three titles would need a major visual overhaul for modern PC expectations. This is an explanation of Sony’s choice, not evidence that the trilogy is included in the PC package or that every player will find the older games unsuitable.
How does Legacy of Thieves compare with the original releases?
| Question | Legacy of Thieves | Earlier releases |
|---|---|---|
| Which games? | A Thief’s End and The Lost Legacy. | The first three Drake games are in the separate The Nathan Drake Collection. |
| Who leads the stories? | Nathan Drake in A Thief’s End; Chloe Frazer in The Lost Legacy. | Nathan Drake in each of the original trilogy’s adventures. |
| Platforms covered by the collection | PS5 and PC versions of its two included games. | The original trilogy is not included in this collection; the trilogy’s separate collection is listed by PlayStation. |
| Notable features in this edition | PS5 display modes, DualSense features, SSD loading and 3D Audio; PC graphics and control options. | Do not assume the original PS3 releases have the same PS5 or PC implementation. |
The comparison depends on which “original” you have in mind. Against the first three games, the biggest difference is content: Legacy of Thieves contains two later titles, while the trilogy is in a separate collection. Against the original PS4 releases of A Thief’s End and The Lost Legacy, the distinction is the updated PS5 and PC presentation and platform features documented by Sony. Those are separate comparisons, and mixing them can lead to the mistaken impression that the collection is either a trilogy remake or a full-series bundle.

Legacy of Thieves is also a two-protagonist package in the sense that its stories have different leads: Nathan in A Thief’s End and Chloe in The Lost Legacy. The original trilogy collection, by contrast, groups three earlier Nathan Drake adventures. Sony’s franchise overview is the source for the trilogy’s separate collection contents, and the Legacy of Thieves product page identifies the two included games.
Sony’s collection page calls A Thief’s End the “Winner of over 150 Game of the Year awards.” That is Sony’s promotional claim; the product page does not state a year or enumerate those awards.
Can existing PS4 owners upgrade?
Sony’s collection page describes a paid PS5 upgrade for owners of qualifying PS4 versions. Eligibility depends on how you own the PS4 game:
- Qualifying PS4 disc: The disc must be inserted each time you play the PS5 digital upgrade. A PS5 Digital Edition, which has no disc drive, cannot use this disc-based upgrade route.
- Uncharted 4 claimed through PlayStation Plus: Sony says this does not qualify for the digital PS5 upgrade.
- Other PS4 ownership: Check the current PlayStation Store terms for the specific version you own before purchasing; the upgrade requires an additional fee.
Upgrade eligibility and fees are storefront terms that can change. Confirm the current offer for your region and account rather than relying on an old price or assuming every PS4 copy qualifies.
In particular, owning a PS4 disc and owning a digital entitlement are not interchangeable for this upgrade route. Sony’s stated disc condition means the qualifying disc has to be present when you play the PS5 digital upgrade. That condition is relevant to whether the upgrade is convenient for your setup as well as whether you qualify. If your PS5 is the Digital Edition, it has no disc drive, so it cannot satisfy that disc-based requirement. Check the precise PS4 edition and current terms before paying an upgrade fee.
Rank #4
The PlayStation Plus caveat is another reason not to assume that every way of having played Uncharted 4 creates upgrade eligibility. Sony specifically says a PS Plus claim of the game does not qualify for the digital PS5 upgrade. The source does not provide a timeless price or a full list of every qualifying edition, so the current regional PlayStation Store listing is the authority to check for your account.
Is there a PS5 disc edition?
Yes. PlayStation Direct lists a PS5 disc edition of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection at its product page. That confirms the physical edition exists, but stock and price depend on the current listing. The disc edition is the straightforward format to check if you want a physical copy; it does not change which two games the collection contains.
A physical edition can be useful to distinguish from the digital PS5 upgrade discussed above: the PlayStation Direct listing confirms a disc version of the collection itself, while the upgrade route for a qualifying PS4 disc is a digital PS5 upgrade that requires the old disc to be inserted. These are different purchase situations. The listing alone does not establish present-day inventory, price, or availability in every region, so check the retailer’s live product page before making a decision. No Amazon listing, stock, price, or affiliate eligibility has been verified here.
Which collection should you choose?
- Choose Legacy of Thieves if you want A Thief’s End and The Lost Legacy with the PS5 or PC features described above.
- Choose The Nathan Drake Collection if you want the first three Nathan Drake adventures.
- Consider both if you want the trilogy’s earlier stories as well as the two later games. They are separate collections, not one complete package.
Your platform can narrow the choice. For the PS5 version of the two later games, Sony lists the three display modes, DualSense features, SSD loading, and 3D Audio. For PC, the official feature list covers graphics options, compatible 4K and ultrawide displays, control choices and remapping, FSR 2, and wired DualSense features. Those details apply to the Legacy of Thieves games, not to the original trilogy as part of this package.
If you already own a PS4 version, check upgrade eligibility before buying the collection again. The paid PS5 upgrade applies only to qualifying versions under Sony’s current terms; a PS4 disc must be inserted each time for the disc-based route, and a PlayStation Plus-claimed copy of Uncharted 4 does not qualify for the digital upgrade. If you would rather own a physical PS5 copy, PlayStation Direct lists the disc edition, but its current price and stock must be checked directly.
For Sony’s official contents, features, story FAQ, and upgrade conditions, see the Legacy of Thieves collection page. Sony’s explanation of the PC game selection appears in its October 19, 2022 PlayStation Blog article. The PlayStation franchise overview lists the separate The Nathan Drake Collection, while Sony’s PC feature page gives the PC options and controller notes.

Do I need to play the whole series before Legacy of Thieves?
Sony says you do not need to play the entire series first and describes the included games as standalone adventures. There is continuity, so earlier games can provide more context for Nathan Drake’s story in A Thief’s End, but the trilogy is not a stated requirement.
Is Legacy of Thieves a remake of the first three games?
No. It updates A Thief’s End and The Lost Legacy for PS5 and PC. The first three Drake games are in a separate collection.
What are the PS5 graphics modes?
Sony lists Fidelity Mode with native 4K and a 30 fps target, Performance Mode with a 60 fps target and 1440p-based scaling or supersampling for supported displays, and Performance+ Mode with a 120 fps target at 1080p. Performance+ requires a compatible 120 Hz display. These are publisher-stated targets, not independent benchmark guarantees.
Does the PC version include keyboard and mouse support?
Yes. Sony lists keyboard and mouse, a range of gamepads, control remapping, adjustable graphics, compatible 4K and ultrawide support, and AMD FSR 2. DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers on PC require a wired connection.
Can I upgrade my PS4 copy to the PS5 collection?
Sony describes a paid upgrade for qualifying PS4 versions, but eligibility depends on the edition and current storefront terms. A qualifying disc must be inserted each time you play the PS5 digital upgrade, and a PS Plus-claimed copy of Uncharted 4 does not qualify for that digital upgrade. Check the current terms for your account and region.
Is there a physical PS5 edition?
Yes. PlayStation Direct lists a PS5 disc edition. Check the live listing for current stock and price; the physical format does not change the two games included.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection is the updated PS5 and PC package for A Thief’s End and The Lost Legacy, not a remake or bundle of the first three Nathan Drake games. Get The Nathan Drake Collection for that original trilogy; consider both collections if you want both groups of adventures. Check current upgrade eligibility, fees, and physical-edition availability before buying.
