Set become: true to activate escalation and use become_user to choose the target identity; naming a user alone does not turn escalation on. The safest design is to escalate only the tasks that require it, supply credentials through a protected mechanism, and verify that the connection plugin and operating system support the selected method.

What Ansible become actually changes
Ansible calls privilege escalation “become” because the account that connects to a managed host can become a different account for a task. The remote or connection user remains the account used to establish the session; become changes the identity under which the module command runs.

Three directives define the usual behavior:
becomeis the switch that enables escalation.become_usernames the account that should execute the task. The default target is normallyroot.become_methodselects the operating-system or connection-plugin mechanism, such assudo,su,doas, runas, or networkenable.
become_user without become: true does not activate escalation. This distinction explains many playbooks that appear to name the right account but still execute as the original connection user.
The same controls can be expressed as play or task directives, inventory connection variables, or command-line options. Ansible’s normal variable and command-line precedence rules determine which value wins when more than one layer sets a control.

Choose the narrowest useful scope
Escalation scope affects both safety and troubleshooting. Start at task scope, widen to a play only when every task needs the elevated identity, and use inventory policy for a host or group whose operating rules are consistent.
One privileged task
This pattern leaves package-independent work under the connection account and elevates only the service operation:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- hosts: web
tasks:
- name: Ensure the web service is running
ansible.builtin.service:
name: httpd
state: started
become: true
Task scope is usually easiest to audit: a reviewer can see exactly which operation crosses the privilege boundary.
An entire play
- hosts: web
become: true
tasks:
- name: Install the package
ansible.builtin.package:
name: httpd
state: present
- name: Deploy the system configuration
ansible.builtin.template:
src: httpd.conf.j2
dest: /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
mode: '0644'
Play scope is appropriate when every task changes system-owned files or services. Do not use it merely because one early task needs root; split that task or use a block with a local become setting.
Running as a service account
- name: Run the application maintenance command as apache
ansible.builtin.command: somecommand
become: true
become_user: apache
This is useful when a process must own generated files or when a command should inherit a service account’s permissions instead of root’s. Confirm that the target account has a valid shell and the environment the command expects.

Command-line controls and password prompts
The short and long command-line forms are:
| Purpose | Short form | Long form |
|---|---|---|
| Enable become | -b |
--become |
| Select the target account | not stated | --become-user |
| Select the method | not stated | --become-method |
| Prompt for the escalation password | -K |
--ask-become-pass |
For example:
ansible-playbook site.yml --become --ask-become-pass
ansible-playbook site.yml --become --become-user apache
ansible-playbook site.yml --become --become-method doas
-K only asks for a password; it does not enable become. A run started with -K but without --become can still execute entirely as the connection user. Conversely, a playbook with become: true can pause if the selected method needs a password and none was supplied.
Methods and where they fit
Ansible Core currently lists these become methods: sudo, su, pbrun, pfexec, doas, dzdo, ksu, runas, and machinectl. The default method is generally sudo, and the default target is root. Availability still depends on the connection plugin and the managed platform.
| Method | Typical target or platform | Password and policy considerations | Operational notes |
|---|---|---|---|
sudo |
Linux and other Unix-like hosts | May require the connection user’s sudo password; sudoers can limit commands, hosts, or timestamps. | Common default; inspect sudoers rules when a command is rejected or a prompt appears. |
su |
Unix account switching | Usually authenticates to the target account and may require that account’s password. | The target account’s shell and login policy matter. |
doas |
Unix systems using doas policy | Rules in the doas configuration determine allowed users and commands. | Use only when the connection plugin and host configuration support it. |
pbrun, dzdo |
Environments with those enterprise privilege tools | Central policy can restrict executable paths and identities. | Coordinate rule changes with the platform’s security administrators. |
pfexec or ksu |
Platforms that provide those native mechanisms | Authorization profiles or Kerberos policy determine success. | Verify platform-specific prerequisites before standardizing a role. |
machinectl |
Systemd-managed containers or machines | Access depends on machine policy and the account permitted to enter it. | It is not a substitute for a host-level method on every system. |
runas |
Windows | Token privileges, the Secondary Logon service, and logon rights affect elevation. | The connection account must already be an Administrator; an underprivileged account cannot elevate through runas. |
enable |
Network devices with privileged EXEC mode | Credentials and device authorization determine entry to enable mode. | Use with a supported network_cli or httpapi connection. |
Only one become method can be enabled for a host, and Ansible cannot chain methods in one escalation path—for example, it cannot combine sudo and su as a single operation.

ansible_become=true
ansible_become_method=sudo
ansible_become_user=root
The principal variables are ansible_become, ansible_become_method, ansible_become_user, ansible_become_password, and ansible_become_exe. The executable variable is useful when the privilege program is installed outside the standard path.
Never put a become password in unencrypted inventory. Store it in an Ansible Vault-encrypted variable, prompt for it interactively with --ask-become-pass, or provide it through a controlled automation credential system. Limit who can decrypt Vault data, and avoid printing secret-bearing variables in task output or debug messages.
Inventory-wide escalation can hide the true privilege boundary of a role. Keep host policy in inventory when it is genuinely uniform, but leave task-level become declarations in roles where reviewers need to see which operations require elevation.
The temporary-module security boundary
Ansible normally transfers a module file to the managed host and executes it there. A special case occurs when both the connection user and become_user are unprivileged. The module must be readable by the target account even though neither account can simply read every other user’s temporary files.
Ansible may try these mechanisms, in sequence or according to the host configuration:

- POSIX access-control lists to grant the target account read access.
- A configured common group through
ansible_common_remote_group. - A world-readable temporary directory in configurations that permit it.
Module arguments can contain sensitive values. If the temporary file is world-readable, other local users may inspect those parameters while the task runs. Since Ansible 2.1, the default behavior is to error when it cannot execute the module securely. Setting world_readable_temp changes the failure into a warning and permits execution.
Enable world_readable_temp only as an explicit risk decision on a managed node you trust. Prefer a connection account and target account that can share a secure ACL or common group, and avoid passing secrets as command-line arguments where they could be exposed in process listings or module content.
Connection-plugin and platform requirements
Unix-like hosts
Check that the selected escalation executable exists, that the connection account is authorized by the host policy, and that a noninteractive command can authenticate. A sudo rule that allows an interactive shell but not the exact module command can still cause a task failure.

For a device that supports privileged EXEC or enable mode, set become: true and become_method: enable with a supported network_cli or httpapi connection. This is a device context change, not a Unix-style process switch. Confirm that the network platform’s connection plugin implements enable mode before adding the setting.
Windows
Windows uses the same inventory and command-line naming pattern, with runas as the relevant method. Elevation is not available when the connection account is merely a standard user: that account must already be an Administrator. The Secondary Logon service, token privileges, and configured logon rights can each change the result. A failure that looks like a bad password may instead be a missing service or denied logon right.

Diagnose hangs and common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Checks and corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| The task appears frozen after connection | The escalation program is waiting for a password. | Run with --ask-become-pass, configure a protected credential, and confirm that the policy permits noninteractive execution. Do not assume -K alone enables become. |
| “Permission denied” while writing a system path | Become is disabled, the target user is wrong, or the method is unauthorized. | Verify become: true, inspect the effective become_user and method, then test the exact command under the host’s privilege policy. |
| Target user cannot read the temporary module | Both users are unprivileged and no ACL or common group is available. | Configure a secure shared mechanism, set ansible_common_remote_group where appropriate, or redesign the account boundary. Treat world_readable_temp as a last-resort exposure. |
| “Method not supported” or an ignored setting | The connection plugin does not implement that become method. | Check the plugin’s capabilities and select a supported method. One host cannot use multiple methods in a chained escalation. |
| Windows runas fails for a standard-user connection | The connection account lacks Administrator status or required token rights. | Use an Administrator connection account and verify Secondary Logon and logon-right settings. |
| Network commands remain in the wrong mode | Enable escalation was not requested or the connection type is incompatible. | Use become: true, become_method: enable, and a supported network_cli or httpapi connection. |
During diagnosis, run a minimal play containing one harmless command and print the effective connection variables without exposing passwords. This isolates authorization and plugin problems from errors in a larger role.
Governance, restricted commands, and linting
Some sudo, pbrun, or doas policies permit only specific command paths. If Ansible’s module wrapper or temporary executable does not match those paths, the task can be denied even though the human administrator can run a similar command manually. The documented governance options are a special account without that path constraint or centralized indirect access to SSH credentials through AWX or Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform. Choose the option that fits your organization’s approval and audit requirements.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ansible Lint’s partial-become rule checks that escalation is activated when a task changes users. The rule does not evaluate become values inherited from a play or supplied on the command line, so a clean lint result does not prove that the runtime identity is correct. Test the effective play against a representative host as part of review.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the exact task that needs another identity and start with task-level scope.
- Set
become: true; do not rely onbecome_useralone. - Choose
become_userdeliberately: root, a service account, a network enable context, or a Windows runas identity. - Select one method supported by the host and connection plugin.
- Decide how the password or token is supplied before the run: prompt, Vault-protected variable, or an approved centralized credential.
- Test a noninteractive invocation so a production run cannot wait indefinitely for input.
- For two unprivileged Unix users, verify ACL or common-group handling before transferring modules that contain secrets.
- Keep
world_readable_tempdisabled unless the exposure is understood and accepted for that trusted host. - Review sudoers, doas, pbrun, or Windows policy for the actual executable and logon rights Ansible will use.
- Record the selected identity and method in role documentation so operators can audit the privilege boundary.
Why the distinction matters in real playbooks
Privilege escalation is not a synonym for “run everything as root.” It is a controlled transition between the account that connects and the identity that performs a particular operation. Treating activation, target identity, method, credential delivery, and temporary-file permissions as separate decisions makes failures diagnosable and limits the impact of a compromised task or credential. That model also carries cleanly from Unix services to network enable mode and Windows runas, where the mechanics differ but the same questions—who connects, who executes, how authorization is granted, and what data is exposed—still apply.
