Reliable no-interruption deploys require a real readiness check, graceful shutdown, backward-compatible releases, and data that survives container replacement. This guide explains the deployment sequence, supported application types, configuration requirements, failure modes, and a validation procedure.

What a Coolify rolling update actually does
For eligible application deployments, Coolify uses a replacement sequence rather than stopping the live container immediately. The existing container continues serving while Coolify prepares and starts a new container. If the replacement becomes ready, Coolify stops and removes the old container. If the replacement fails its readiness check, Coolify can remove the failed replacement and leave the healthy current container running.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The sequence is therefore:
- Coolify builds or pulls the new image and creates the replacement container.
- The replacement starts while the current container remains active.
- When a Coolify health check or image-provided health check exists, Coolify waits for it to pass.
- A failed check causes the replacement to be treated as unhealthy rather than making it the live version.
- After the replacement is considered ready, Coolify stops and removes the old container.
When no health check is configured, a process that starts successfully is treated as ready. That process may still be running migrations, warming caches, connecting to a database, or waiting for another service. Coolify can consequently remove the old container before the new application can serve a real request. A deployment that shows two containers briefly is evidence of overlap, not proof that users experienced uninterrupted service.
Which Coolify applications use this path
Coolify’s application-level rolling replacement is available when the application type permits two independently named containers to coexist. The documented eligible types are Nixpacks, Railpack, Static, Dockerfile, and Docker Image applications.

| Application type | Application-level rolling replacement | Readiness source | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nixpacks | Supported when overlap is possible | Coolify health check or image check | Startup success without a check is not a readiness guarantee |
| Railpack | Supported when overlap is possible | Coolify health check or image check | The application must bind to the expected internal port |
| Static | Supported when overlap is possible | Coolify health check or image check | The served endpoint must represent usable application readiness |
| Dockerfile | Supported when overlap is possible | Coolify check or Dockerfile HEALTHCHECK |
The final image must contain every utility used by the check |
| Docker Image | Supported when overlap is possible | Coolify check or check embedded in the image | Image configuration and runtime settings still have to permit overlap |
| Docker Compose | Not this application-level sequence | Compose service configuration | Coolify runs docker compose up; Compose reconciles services |
| Docker Swarm target | Controlled by Swarm | Swarm service and health configuration | Coolify uses docker stack deploy; Swarm controls replacement and routing |
For Compose projects, the behavior comes from the services, dependencies, health checks, and update settings in the Compose definition. Do not assume that the application-level sequence described above applies to every service in a Compose project. Swarm deployments likewise depend on Swarm’s replica and routing behavior rather than Coolify’s single-application replacement logic.
Health checks are readiness gates, not simple liveness tests
Coolify treats a health check as a readiness signal for Docker and Coolify. The useful question is not “Is a process running?” but “Can this container serve the requests that matter?” A check should remain failing while the application is initializing and pass only after critical dependencies and startup work are complete.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWhat a useful endpoint verifies
- Use the container’s internal listening port, not a host-published port.
- Choose an endpoint that fails when the application cannot serve real traffic.
- Include essential dependency checks when the application cannot function without them, while avoiding an unnecessarily fragile check for optional services.
- Return a failure status until migrations, configuration loading, connection setup, and other mandatory initialization have finished.
- Make the endpoint fast enough to complete within the configured timeout.
An endpoint that always returns HTTP 200 can mark a broken or half-initialized release healthy. A passing check then causes the old container to be removed even though user-facing requests fail moments later.
Dashboard checks and image checks
A health check configured in the Coolify dashboard runs inside the application container. The final image therefore needs the command used by that check. For example, a dashboard check that calls curl will fail if the image does not include curl; the same applies to wget.

For a Dockerfile image, a Dockerfile HEALTHCHECK travels with the image. Coolify’s documentation gives this example pattern:
HEALTHCHECK --interval=30s --timeout=5s --start-period=20s --retries=3
CMD curl --fail http://localhost:3000/health || exit 1
The 30-second interval, five-second timeout, 20-second start period, and three retries are documentation examples, not universal requirements. Set them to match the application’s actual startup time and failure characteristics. A start period shorter than a normal cold start will produce a false failure; a very long interval can delay detection of a bad replacement.
What happens at the proxy
When Coolify Proxy uses Traefik, unhealthy containers can be removed from routing. If every available application container is unhealthy, Traefik may return 404 Not Found
or No available server
. This is why a check must describe serving readiness and why a replacement should not be marked healthy merely because its main process has not exited.
Graceful shutdown keeps the old release useful during handoff
After the replacement is ready, Coolify sends the old container its termination signal and allows a shutdown window. Configure this under Advanced > Operations with Stop Grace Period. Coolify documents a default of 30 seconds and accepts values from 1 to 3,600 seconds.

Choose the maximum time the application needs to stop safely, not an arbitrary large number. During that period, the application must stop accepting new work, finish or safely abandon in-flight requests and jobs, flush required state, and exit in response to the signal. A longer grace period only provides time; it cannot make an application that ignores the signal shut down correctly.
Check the runtime’s signal behavior as well as the process manager. If a shell remains as PID 1 and does not forward signals to the application, the grace period may expire while the actual worker keeps running. Test long requests, streaming responses, queue jobs, and scheduled tasks rather than checking only a quick page load.
Why Coolify may stop the old container first
Coolify disables overlap when the old and new containers cannot coexist safely on the host. Documented conditions include:
- A host-published port that both containers would need.
- A consistent container name.
- A custom container name.
- A custom IP address or IPv6 address.
- A pull-request preview deployment.
In these cases, Coolify must stop the current container before creating the replacement, producing a stop-then-start interruption. Inspect deployment logs when Coolify reports that rolling updates are unsupported. An optional generated Container Name Prefix includes a deployment-specific timestamp and does not, by itself, disable rolling updates; a fixed or custom name is the relevant conflict.

Host ports are a frequent source of confusion. Container-to-container networking and proxy routing can allow overlap, while binding the same host port requires exclusive ownership. Remove an unnecessary host binding or redesign the service so only the proxy owns the public listener when that is appropriate for your architecture.

Compose and Swarm use different update controllers
| Deployment path | Who controls replacement | How readiness affects availability | Typical limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coolify application rolling replacement | Coolify and Docker container lifecycle | Coolify or image health check gates promotion; a failed replacement can be removed | Overlap can be disabled by ports, names, addresses, or previews |
| Docker Compose application | Compose reconciliation invoked by Coolify | Service health and Compose behavior determine when services are usable | There is no guarantee that Compose will follow Coolify’s single-container sequence |
| Docker Swarm target | Swarm service scheduler and routing | Swarm replicas, update policy, and health behavior determine replacement | Availability depends on the stack and service definitions |
For Compose and Swarm, define the desired replica, update, routing, and health behavior in the orchestration layer you are using. A Coolify setting cannot substitute for a service definition that permits only one replica or requires an exclusive host resource.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Data, sessions, and releases must survive overlap
Containers are replaceable. Files written only to a container’s writable filesystem disappear when that container is removed. Store databases and uploads in managed services, persistent volumes, or mounted files that are attached to the new container definition. Verify that the replacement mounts the same location with the expected permissions before treating the deploy as safe.
Overlap also means two releases can execute at the same time. The old and new versions must therefore be compatible for the entire transition window.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
- Database migrations: Prefer changes that both versions can read and write. Add new fields before relying on them, and defer destructive changes until the old release is gone.
- APIs: Keep response and request changes compatible while both versions receive traffic.
- Queues and workers: Ensure either version can process jobs that the other version enqueues. A brief period with two worker versions is normal during replacement.
- Caches and sessions: Use shared, appropriately versioned storage when requests can reach either container. Do not rely on process memory for session continuity.
- Shared files: Put uploads and generated assets on persistent shared storage rather than a container-local directory.
- Schedulers: Make scheduled tasks idempotent or coordinate them so two briefly running releases do not duplicate irreversible work.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Create a real readiness check. Make it fail during startup and pass only when the application can serve a critical request. Confirm the command and its binary exist in the final image.
- Set the shutdown window. Open Advanced > Operations, set Stop Grace Period to the application’s measured maximum shutdown time, and verify that the process handles its termination signal.
- Remove overlap blockers. Check host-published ports, fixed or custom container names, custom IP or IPv6 assignments, and whether the deployment is a pull-request preview.
- Deploy a compatible change. Use a release whose schema, API, queue, cache, session, and file behavior works with the currently running version.
- Exercise traffic continuously. Repeatedly request a critical endpoint throughout the deployment, including requests that perform representative reads and writes.
- Read the deployment log. Look for messages equivalent to
Rolling update started
,New container is healthy
, andRolling update completed
. - Verify application work. Check database writes, background jobs, sessions, uploads, and other persistent data after the old container is removed.
Only the final two checks establish user-visible continuity. Container overlap by itself does not show that requests, jobs, or state transitions succeeded throughout the handoff.
Troubleshoot an interrupted or failed replacement
The old container stops before the new one starts
Inspect the deployment log for a host port mapping, consistent or custom container name, custom IP or IPv6 address, or pull-request preview deployment. Correct the conflicting setting if overlap is required. If the resource must remain exclusive, plan for a brief interruption or move that resource behind a component designed for shared routing.
The replacement never becomes healthy
- Read the replacement container’s health status and startup logs.
- Confirm the check uses the internal port and correct path.
- Verify that
curl, wget, or another check command exists in the image. - Increase the start period or retry budget only when startup legitimately takes longer; do not hide a real failure with an excessively long delay.
- Test the endpoint from inside the container so DNS, binding, authentication, and dependency errors are visible.
Traffic fails after the replacement is marked healthy
The readiness endpoint is probably too weak. Make it represent the minimum conditions required for real requests, then inspect graceful-shutdown behavior on the old release. Also check whether sessions, caches, database changes, queue messages, or shared files work across both versions.
The log reports a build failure
Deployment history records the source revision, image build or pull, generated configuration, and container actions. A failed source build does not replace the running application. Failures after a successful build depend on whether Coolify could overlap the containers and whether the replacement’s health and shutdown settings were correct.

What “zero downtime” means here
Coolify explicitly cautions that rolling updates do not guarantee zero downtime, and that a passing container health check alone does not prove a zero-downtime transition. The practical standard is stronger: the replacement must become genuinely ready, the old release must drain safely, both versions must coexist without corrupting shared state, and users must continue receiving successful responses during the entire handoff.
