A directive is a setting that ends with a semicolon; a context is a block enclosed in braces that can contain other directives. Settings outside every block belong to the main context. In a normal HTTP installation, the hierarchy is main → http → server → location: http handles web traffic, each server defines a virtual host, and each location controls a URI range. The NGINX beginner guide and NGINX administration guide document this model.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Once you understand that tree, most configuration errors become scope errors: a directive is in the wrong context, an included file is inserted at the wrong level, a child block overrides an inherited value, or a request is routed to a different server or location than expected.

What an NGINX configuration file contains
The primary file is usually named nginx.conf. It is plain text made from two syntax elements:
- Simple directives contain a name and arguments and end with
;, such asworker_connections 1024;orlisten 80;. - Block directives end with
{, contain nested directives, and close with}. A block that can contain directives is called a context.
Anything written before the first block is in the main context. Typical main-level settings include the worker user, process options, error logging, and event-processing limits. The events, http, mail, and stream blocks are also declared from this top level. A directive is legal only in the contexts listed in its documentation; moving a valid setting to another level can make the configuration fail its syntax test.

Find the configuration file NGINX is actually using
Installers do not all choose the same path. NGINX Plus documentation lists /etc/nginx on Linux and /usr/local/etc/nginx on FreeBSD, while open-source packages and source builds can use other locations. Do not assume that the file you edited is active.
- Run
nginx -Vwith the same binary used by the service. - Find the
--conf-path=build argument in the output. That is the compiled default path fornginx.conf. - Open that file and follow its
includedirectives to discover the files that contribute the effective configuration. - If a service manager starts a different binary or passes
-c, inspect the service definition as well; the command-line file can override the compiled default.
The file layout and include behavior are described in the configuration-file administration guide.

A representative HTTP hierarchy
This compact example shows where common directives sit. It is a structural example, not a complete production security policy.
user nobody;
events {
worker_connections 1024;
}
http {
include mime.types;
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.com;
root /srv/www;
location / {
try_files $uri $uri/ =404;
}
}
}
user is in main; worker_connections is in events; include and the server block are in http; and try_files is inside a location. The nesting is significant: placing the server block outside http, for example, is invalid.
How include files assemble one effective configuration
include inserts another file, or all files matching a mask, exactly where the directive appears. The enclosing context at that point determines what the inserted text is allowed to contain. An include under http can contain server blocks; an include under a server can contain location blocks or server-level directives, but not another top-level http block.
http {
include mime.types;
include conf.d/http;
include vhosts/*.conf;
}
In this example, every matching virtual-host file is parsed as part of the http context. A common failure is copying a file that starts with server { into an include that is itself nested inside a location; the text may be syntactically valid elsewhere but illegal at that insertion point. Keep feature-specific files small, name them predictably, and document the context they expect.

How NGINX chooses a server block
For an HTTP request, NGINX first uses the listening address and port, then compares the request’s Host value with server_name. One server becomes the default for a listen socket when no more specific name matches. A request sent to an IP address, an unexpected host name, or a port that is not listed can therefore land in a different block from the one you edited. The request-processing rules are documented at nginx.org/en/docs/http/request_processing.html.
When diagnosing a virtual-host problem, verify all three values together:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- the destination IP address and port;
- the
Hostheader (or the name used by the client); - the
listenandserver_namedeclarations in each candidate block.
How location matching works
After selecting a server, NGINX evaluates its location blocks. Literal prefix locations are compared first and the longest matching prefix is the candidate. Regular-expression locations are then considered in configuration order under the documented matching rules. An exact match can take precedence, and a prefix marked to stop regular-expression evaluation changes the normal sequence; use those modifiers deliberately rather than assuming that the visually nearest block wins.
For example, these blocks describe different URI sets:

location = /status {
return 200 'ok';
}
location /assets/ {
root /srv/game;
}
location /api/ {
proxy_pass http://backend_pool;
}
/status is an exact URI, /assets/ is a static prefix, and /api/ is a prefix intended for an upstream application. If a request appears to ignore a rule, test the complete URI against every exact, prefix, and regular-expression location in that server rather than moving directives randomly.
Inheritance, overriding, and scope
In general, a child context inherits a directive’s setting from its parent. A value placed in a child can override the inherited value when that directive supports inheritance at both levels. The behavior is directive-specific: some settings are inherited, some are merged, and some are reset or are valid only at one level. The administration guide describes the general rule, while each directive’s reference page defines the exception.
| Where a value is declared | Where it can affect requests | What to check |
|---|---|---|
http |
All servers and locations that inherit it | Whether a child explicitly replaces it |
server |
Locations in that virtual server | Whether another server receives the request first |
location |
Only requests matched by that location | Whether a more specific location wins |
Do not infer inheritance from indentation alone. Look up the directive’s Context field and inheritance notes, then place the narrowest override at the level where it is needed. This keeps global defaults consistent while preventing one game API or asset path from changing unrelated hosts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Serving static files versus proxying requests
Static content with root
The root directive can be set in http, server, or location. NGINX appends the request URI to that root to form the filesystem path. For example, with root /srv/game;, a request for /assets/logo.png maps to /srv/game/assets/logo.png. The static-content guide explains this mapping.

Use a server-level root for a site’s normal document tree and a location-level root only when a URI prefix intentionally maps elsewhere. Check permissions, trailing slashes, and the resulting path before treating a 404 as a routing problem. The broader web-server guide covers the relationship between locations and static or proxied handling at docs.nginx.com/nginx/admin-guide/web-server/web-server/.
Proxying an application
A location can instead pass the request to an upstream application. Keep the proxy-specific directives in the location that owns the API or dynamic route, while shared upstream definitions and HTTP-wide defaults remain in http. This separation lets static game downloads and a matchmaking or account API use different handling without duplicating global settings.
Diagnose “directive is not allowed here” errors
When NGINX rejects a configuration, classify the problem before editing:
- Wrong parent: a
serverorlocationblock was placed outside its legal parent. - Wrong include level: a file was included inside a location even though it contains server- or HTTP-level directives.
- Unknown directive: the installed build lacks the module that provides it, or the name is misspelled.
- Unexpected behavior rather than a syntax error: the request selected another server or location, or a child setting overrode an inherited value.
Trace from the top down: identify the active nginx.conf, expand its includes, confirm the enclosing context, then map the request to a server and location. This method is faster and safer than copying directives between files until the error disappears.
Test and apply changes safely
- Save a backup or use version control before editing.
- Run the installed binary’s configuration test, normally
nginx -t. Fix every reported file and line before continuing. - Reload NGINX through the service manager or with the binary’s reload signal after the test succeeds. A reload reads the new configuration while allowing current requests to finish; it does not require dropping active connections.
- Verify the result with a request that supplies the intended host name and port. Check status codes, response headers, logs, and the selected static or proxied path.
- Keep the previous known-good file available so you can restore it and reload if the new behavior is wrong.
The official administration guide describes testing and reloading as the normal way to apply configuration changes without interrupting current requests: Managing configuration files.
A practical layout for a game-facing site
A maintainable layout might keep process and event settings in the main file, shared HTTP defaults in one include, each game or service host in its own server file, and route-specific behavior in locations:

/etc/nginx/conf.d/http-defaults.conf

The names are conventions, not required paths. What matters is that each file is included at the level its contents require. A server file can then clearly separate a static launcher or patch directory from an API location, while the top-level file remains easy to audit.
Quick Recap
Rules to remember
- Read the tree from
maindownward; indentation is visual, braces define scope. - Use
nginx -Vto locate the active configuration instead of guessing the path. - Place
includewhere the inserted directives are legal. - Expect child contexts to inherit parent values only when that directive’s documentation says they do.
- Debug server selection before location selection, and location selection before inheritance.
- Always syntax-test, reload, and then verify a request using the intended host and URI.
