What is the critic consensus on Undertale?
Metacritic’s main Undertale page lists a 92 Metascore out of 100 and labels it “Universal Acclaim.” Its displayed breakdown is 40 positive reviews (93%), three mixed (7%), and zero negative, among 43 critic reviews. The PC-filtered critic listing also displays a 92 and the same sentiment counts, but lists 44 reviews. Both views were accessed October 8, 2026; Metacritic’s displayed review totals differ by page, so neither should be presented as a definitive count across every platform.

This is a very strong critical consensus, not a claim that every critic agreed or that the score explains the game by itself. Metascore summarizes the reviews included by Metacritic; the review excerpts give a more useful sense of the qualities behind that reception.
What did critics like about Undertale?
Across the excerpts shown on Metacritic’s pages, recurring points include memorable characters, humor, emotional turns, replayable choices, and the game’s willingness to question familiar RPG conventions. This is a synthesis of selected excerpts, not a quantified analysis of every review.
#1 Best Overall
- Introducing the Nintendo Switch, an indie game that has recorded the huge hit around the world
- Explore the world of RPG with fun characters in Henteko Whether you defeat or miss your opponents, it's all up to you
- Can the child of carrot fall into the underground world where monsters live with Or will you be trapped forever
The Jimquisition’s September 20, 2015 excerpt, reproduced on Metacritic, calls the game an unusually ambitious and successful independent RPG. Destructoid’s September 24 excerpt highlights its capacity to make players laugh and feel happy, then deliver sad or shocking moments, and notes the appeal of replaying choices. GamesBeat’s November 19 excerpt praises the writing, characters, compact pacing, and critique of familiar game conventions. USgamer’s September 30 excerpt emphasizes surprise and the way the game plays with traditional turn-based mechanics.
Other positive excerpts focus on atmosphere and innovation. DarkStation’s February 23, 2016 review excerpt describes a blend of relaxed and tense gameplay, atmosphere, and characters. GameSpot’s November 22, 2015 excerpt says the game challenges expectations and is innovative. These are excerpts as attributed by Metacritic, not substitutes for the full reviews.
What did mixed or less-positive reviews say?
Strong aggregate scores can obscure differences in individual responses. A mixed LevelUp excerpt dated September 24, 2015 praises the emotional journey and combat innovations, while saying some parts feel underdeveloped. Riot Pixels’ January 25, 2016 excerpt takes a substantially less positive view, describing it as “An interesting concept, a weak execution.” Metacritic’s main page shows the Riot Pixels review at 60.
The contrast points to a useful distinction: a reviewer can appreciate the concept and its departures from convention while finding the execution uneven. These examples illustrate disagreement; they do not establish how common any particular criticism was across all reviews.
How does Undertale’s combat help explain the reviews?
Steam’s official store description frames the game as an indie RPG about a human who falls underground into a world of monsters. It describes ways to negotiate out of danger as well as timed attacks and dodging. That combination helps explain why reviewers discuss the game’s relationship to conventional RPG combat: encounters involve more than simply attacking, while still drawing on familiar turn-based elements.

Critic aggregates and player ratings represent different groups and should not be treated as interchangeable. On Metacritic’s main page, the user score snapshot was 8.7 from 8,073 ratings. Steam’s page showed 96% positive among 155,588 English user reviews and 96% positive among 4,775 recent reviews from the last 30 days. These figures were accessed October 8, 2026; user-review counts and percentages can change, and Steam’s recent-review figure covers a rolling period rather than critics.
Is Undertale worth playing based on its reviews?
The critic record supports trying Undertale if you value distinctive characters, humor, emotional surprises, and an RPG that experiments with familiar conventions. The mixed and negative examples also show that the game’s unusual approach will not work equally well for every reviewer; the aggregate does not remove the possibility of unevenness or personal preference. The available excerpts are a guide to the kinds of qualities and objections reviewers raised, rather than a guarantee that you will respond to them the same way.
