Unity’s current FAQ says the fee will not apply to games made with Unity 6 or any other Unity version, and that no Unity game has been or will be subject to it. Developers still pay under Unity’s subscription model when applicable; that is a separate cost, not a charge per game install.
Does Unity still charge a Runtime Fee?
No. Unity announced the cancellation on September 12, 2024, effective immediately. Its current pricing FAQ says the Runtime Fee does not apply to any Unity version and that no new or existing Unity game has been or will be subject to it.
The change was for game customers. Unity said non-gaming Industry customers were not affected by this modification. For gaming customers, the company said it was returning to a seat-based subscription model, including for developers adopting Unity 6.
What was the proposed fee, and what changed?
The proposal would have tied a charge to game installations after specified revenue and download thresholds. That was different from a subscription based on seats. Unity later withdrew the install-based charge; it did not eliminate subscriptions or promise that Unity would never change subscription prices.

Why did developers object?
The per-install trigger raised concerns about costs that could be difficult to predict from a game’s sales alone. Axios reported in 2023 that developers worried about installs generated through sales, charity bundles, and subscription services, and quoted studios concerned about business stability. It also reported that some developers discussed delaying releases or switching engines. These were examples of the backlash reported at the time, not evidence that every developer agreed or that developers broadly migrated.
Unity CEO Matthew Bromberg later framed the problem as one of trust. In his September 12, 2024 announcement, he wrote: “However, we can’t pursue that mission in conflict with our customers; at its heart, it must be a partnership built on trust.” He said customers understood price increases might be necessary but objected to the novel and controversial form of the proposed fee.

What replaced the Runtime Fee?
Unity did not replace the canceled fee with another per-install charge. For gaming customers, the company said it was returning to seat-based subscriptions. Separate subscription prices and eligibility requirements still apply, so developers should check Unity’s live pricing and terms rather than assume that cancellation means Unity is free for every project.
In October 2024, Unity said it had updated its Editor Software Terms to remove Runtime Fee language and reflect plan eligibility and financial thresholds. Its summary listed annual revenue and funding ranges of $0–$200,000 for Personal, $200,001–$24,999,999 for Pro, and $25,000,000 or more for Enterprise. These were the thresholds in that October 2024 terms summary, not a substitute for checking current eligibility.
Unity said the updated terms applied to Editor users on Personal, Pro, Enterprise, and Industry plans across Editor versions. Users could continue using a named Editor version under terms they had previously accepted, while Unity 6 required acceptance of the updated terms. See Unity’s Editor Software Terms for the terms themselves.
Did the cancellation affect Unity 6?
Yes, in the sense that Unity explicitly said the Runtime Fee would not apply to Unity 6. The cancellation also addressed customer hesitation about upgrading: on Unity’s November 7, 2024 Q3 earnings call, Bromberg said some customers had previously told teams not to upgrade because of the pricing structure and reconsidered after Unity reversed it. That is the CEO’s account, not an independent adoption study. Bromberg also reported more than 500,000 Unity 6 downloads at that point; the figure is company-reported and dates to November 7, 2024, not a current download total.

Have Unity subscription prices changed since the cancellation?
Yes. The Runtime Fee cancellation did not freeze subscription prices. Unity’s current pricing page documents a 5% price increase for Pro and Enterprise effective January 12, 2026. That later subscription change is separate from the canceled per-install fee. Because prices and eligibility can change, consult Unity’s pricing page for the current details.
